Document Griffin's 'offensive' Emmy speech to be censored

kathyUS Comic Kathy Griffin's "offensive" remarks about Jesus at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards would be cut from a pre-taped telecast of the show, the US Academy of Television Arts and Sciences said today.

Griffin made the provocative comment on Saturday night as she took the stage of the Shrine Auditorium to collect her Emmy for best reality program for her Bravo channel show My Life on the D-List.

"A lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus," an exultant Griffin said, holding up her statuette. "Suck it, Jesus. This award is my god now."

Asked about her speech backstage a short time later, an unrepentant Griffin said: "I hope I offended some people. I didn't want to win the Emmy for nothing."

The speech drew fire from a leading Roman Catholic group, the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, which condemned Griffin's remarks as "obscene and blasphemous".

"It is a sure bet that if Griffin had said, 'Suck it, Mohammed', there would have been a very different reaction," Catholic league president Bill Donohue said in a statement posted on the group's website.

He called on TV academy president Dick Askin to denounce Griffin's "hate speech" and on Griffin to apologise.

An edited version of the Creative Arts Emmys is set to air on US cable television's E! Entertainment Network on Saturday, the night before the live Fox network broadcast of the main Primetime Emmy Awards.

"Kathy Griffin's offensive remarks will not be part of the E! telecast," an academy spokeswoman said today. An "abbreviated version" of her acceptance speech will air, instead, she said.

Griffin's reaction to the imbroglio, according to a statement issued by her publicist: "Am I the only Catholic left with a sense of humour?"

Story Highlights
- Kathy Griffin won Emmy at Creative Arts portion
- In speech, joked, "no one had less to do with this award than Jesus"
- Catholic League protests; portions of speech to be censored

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Before Kathy Griffin won a creative arts Emmy last weekend for her reality show, "My Life on the D-List," she joked that an award would move her to the C-list.

She was right: "C" as in censored. The TV academy said her raucous acceptance speech will be edited when the event, which was taped, is shown Saturday on the E! channel. The main prime-time Emmy Awards air the next night on Fox.

"Kathy Griffin's offensive remarks will not be part of the E! telecast on Saturday night," the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences said in a statement Monday.

In her speech, Griffin said that "a lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus."

She went on to hold up her Emmy, make an off-color remark about Christ and proclaim, "This award is my god now!"

The comedian's remarks were condemned Monday by Catholic League President Bill Donohue, who called them a "vulgar, in-your-face brand of hate speech."

According to the TV academy and E!, when the four hour-plus ceremony is edited into a two-hour program, Griffin's remarks will be shown in "an abbreviated version" in which some language may be bleeped.

The program was in production and unfinished, an E! spokeswoman said Monday.

Requests for comment were left Monday evening by phone and e-mail with Griffin's publicist. They were not immediately returned.

The Catholic League, an anti-defamation group, called on the TV academy to "denounce Griffin's obscene and blasphemous comment" at Sunday's ceremony.

The academy said Monday it had no plans to address the issue in the prime-time broadcast.

The organization may have another delicate issue to consider, this one involving an off-color fake music video that aired last December on "Saturday Night Live" and won a creative arts Emmy for best song.

Andy Samberg of "SNL" said Saturday that he had yet to be asked by the TV academy to perform the tune with Timberlake on the Fox broadcast, but he was willing. Timberlake, on a concert tour, is scheduled to be in Los Angeles next weekend.

The subject of their "(Blank) in a Box" video: wrapping a certain part of the male anatomy and presenting it to a loved one as a holiday present.

The academy has said that "show elements are in the process of being worked out."

I wasn't familiar with Kathy Griffin before today, but as of today, she is my hero! Gang up on the "catholic league" and come to the rescue of Kathy!
By the way, did the catholic league have a comment on the billion dollars the California Catholic Church (I capitalize that name for comic effect), paid out for the abuse of minors just in the state of California, or do they think that outrageous situation is just a normal scenario that every church/organization faces?
May I suggest that the catholic church has zero credibility in the morality scene!

She's a fervid atheist alright, and thank god for that speech. The charge for defamation doesn't hold up, she's not talking about believers, she talked about god and his son(aka himself) Jesus. Bill Donahue is a waste of carbon, he never has anything relevant to say, ever.

avatarOh, give me a break! What a bunch of humorless idiots. If these complainers have ever watched an award show (and who hasn't) they have no excuse not to get this joke.

Its not even ABOUT Jesus, its about the annoying cliche in America of piously thanking Jesus or God for every award as if it were a medal from the Pope even if the thing you're getting the award for is something that no religion would actually approve of! Whatever her personal views on religion are, it would be funny on these grounds alone.

Seems like the Catholic League is grasping at straws for something to complain about.

If E! claims any kind of testicular or ovarian weight they will cut the rest of the program and simply air her comments, then beam it directly into Donohue's private plane. That guy's a simple punk and should be getting no face time anywhere. I am no fan of the holy right regardless, but he's just a petty thug.

Bill Donohue has a condition called Perpetual Pissed Syndrome... he thinks everyone and everything is always out to get the Catholics. Man, saw him with the Hitch on TV and I swear Donohue thought that God Is Not Great only targets Catholicism.

No wonder that South Park showed him shooting the Pope and taking over the Papal seat (including locking up Jesus himself).

It's terrific Kathy Griffin is so open about her atheism. She should be invited to appear an atheist conference, and her performance should be recorded and shown on her reality show.

avatarZOMG!!! Get out the red card of censorship and make sure that this clip never sees the light of day! Take away our freedoms, load everyone up with Prozac, do anything but offend the delicate sensibilities of the American viewer!

Seriously, I lost all hope in television after the infamous "wardrobe malfunction" at the Superbowl a few years back. Somehow almost everyone got duped into actually thinking that it was a big deal. Public outcry, solemn apologies, an mass censorship ensued. Absolutely ridiculous.

I really wish someone would go up there an thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster for their award, that guy just doesn't get enough credit. Then again, he's not as jealous as childish as Yahweh and Jesus, so I'm sure he's okay with it.

Kathy Griffin has never struck me as very funny. I do wish I could have been there for this though. Go Kathy!

Not unless you're Jesus/God! If Jesus/God is offended then it's up to him/her/it/they to come forward and say so.
The Catholic League, an anti-defamation group, called on the TV academy to "denounce Griffin's obscene and blasphemous comment" at Sunday's ceremony.

Griffin's comment was not obscene and it's not the place of the TV academy to determine what is blasphemous. Freedom of speech, anyone?

What is frightening is that Donohue and his lot apparently consider any satire directed at religious sentiment to be "hate speech" that should be suppressed. This is not a moderate position, folks. I draw two lessons:

1. This is further evidence that the Catholic Church is not a moderate institution. That isn't news to me, but I am continually dumbfounded when I see atheists and secularists talking about the Catholic Church as if it counted among the "moderates". (I have some further discussion here: http://metamagician3000.blogspot.com/2007/09/therapeutic-cloning-debate-moves-to.html.)

2. Beware of ever supporting religious vilification legislation. If it existed in the US now, there'd be people wanting to apply it to Kathy Griffin. If the litigation failed, there'd be pressure to give the legislation more "teeth". Where I live, the government has made a big mistake in enacting such legislation. So far, there is hope that it will operate fairly sensibly ... though only at enormous expense to anyone who is hauled before the tribunal ... but once such legislation is in place it makes free speech a hostage to fortune. I suggest that everyone in a jurisdiction without such legislation continue to resist it and that everyone in a jurisdiction where it exists monitor the situation with concern. Even restricted legislation is the thin end of a thick wedge.

avatarI guess if she would have said: "Suck it Jahwe, Jesus, Mohammed, Zeus, Jupiter, Bacchus, Thor, Vishnu, Budha, Spaghetti Monster, Pink Unicorn, etc." it would have been fine with Phil.

Her comment was spot on though, because I never heard anyone thanking Mohammed at those events. They usually thank Jesus because American is mostly christian. I never hear anydoby thank Jesus when something bad happens. He's supposed to be omnipotent.

This brings me to a conundrum I had. There is the ontological argument (God is perfect in his existence). But if 2 perfect gods exist then that is more perefect than one existing, even more the perfection is the existence of an infinite number of perfect gods.

I guess the monotheists have got it all wrong :)

I have mixed feelings about this. I didn't actually hear Kathy's speech so without inflection and tone and all I can't comment on what it was she really said. Going by the article it seemed as though it was a joke and certainly not hate speech so Donahue can go chasing after someone else. However, comments like "Kathy you're my hero" stated in her favor simply because she said something infantile and unintelligent. I don't know. I'm certainly not on board with the atheist school of thought that says we should just blindly support anyone who says anything negative about religion. Jokes have their place, but I still like argument based on logic and evidence. I guess if you're in High School a phrase like "suck it Jesus" is pretty funny, worth about a million laughs, but I just thought the article and reading about her speech was just a waste of time and just plain stupid.

The point isn't whether or not anyone is a fan of Kathy Griffin. The point is whether or not satire of this kind - regardless of whether people find it funny/effective - can be suppressed because religionists find it offensive.

I thought the comments were funny and very much to the point - she said what I, and I would guess many others, just think when we have to listen to all those sanctimonious celebs praising Jesus in acceptance speeches. But even if I disliked her and her message, I'd want to defend her.

I even defend Catch the Fire Ministries - a fundamentalist pentecostal outfit that was dragged before the tribunal here for supposed vilification of Muslims - though I have no reason to support the worldview of fundamentalist pentecostals.

We should be standing up for everyone's right to satirise religion and religionists, or to satirise the specific religion and religionists of their choice.

There's an important free speech issue here, and though I realise there are no actual religious vilification laws in place in the relevant jurisdiction, it's important to keep hammering the message that such speech as Kathy Griffin's is legitimate and must not come to be seen as unacceptable "hate speech".

I agree with you as far as what Kathy said, but I think that what is important here is the reaction to it by the religious community. The full frontal attack claiming "hate speach" when something they dont want to hear comes along is unacceptable. We saw the Muslims try the same thing with the "Koran in the Toilet" a few weeks back.

"Jokes have their place"

They certainly do, and there's not enough of them on this humouristically-challenged site!

You can't seriously expect all commments to be based on logic and evidence, in a case like this anything that ridicules religion and gets up the nose of the child-molesters is not a good thing, it's a fucking GREAT thing!

We need to win more converts, we need to be more likeable and human-like, a bit less cold and hyper-analytical. There is no logical arguing with religites, they are immune to logic and don't understand or ignore evidence.

If a so-called great scientist like Francis Collins writes a book subtitled "A scientist presents the evidence for..." and fails to provide a single shred of evidence, that tells me all I need to know about the convoluted god-befuddled mind of the species "Homo Religioso".

Let's keep the logic and evidence for the real worthwhile things in life.

there's not enough [jokes] on this humouristically-challenged site!
I'm glad we have comedy gems like "suck it Jesus" to help fill that void.. such courage! Such piercing wit! Standing ovation!

I agree with Blackford that the only thing important about this is her right to blurt unfunny nonsense, and curbing the pathetic criticisms from Old Man Donahue and the Catholic League. The editing of the telecast isn't particularly shocking, and its false to cast the decision as religious bullying. It's business as usual, they can do what they want with their four hours of footage, consider demographics, yadda yadda yadda. It's E!, folks. They'd cut a legitimately profound acceptance speech if they could.

What is especially unimportant and unspectacular are the remarks following her (honest, progressive, non-joke) opening, and I hope the solution to this "clear-thinking oasis" being "humouristically challenged" is not to become a sycophantic crowd straight out of Oprah's studios whenever someone of minor celebrity makes a dismissive remark about a character/person not present, not even alive, but addressed as though they could hear it and be dismayed. (I hear she's also made some clever observations about how men and women are different)

I hope the solution (if there's even a problem) is more articles like that hilarious review of The Fascism Delusion.
