Document Falwell says Christians shouldn't focus on global warming

by Associated Press

Reposted from:
http://www.wdbj7.com/Global/story.asp?S=6140669&nav=S6aK

LYNCHBURG, Va. The Reverend Jerry Falwell says global warming is "Satan's attempt to redirect the church's primary focus" from evangelism to environmentalism.

Falwell told his Baptist congregation in Lynchburg yesterday that "the jury is still out" on whether humans are causing -- or could stop -- global warming.

But he said some "naive Christian leaders" are being "duped" by arguments like those presented in former Vice President Al Gore's documentary "An Inconvenient Truth. Falwell says the documentary should have been titled "A Convenient Untruth."

Falwell said the Bible teaches that God will maintain the Earth until Jesus returns, so Christians should be responsible environmentalists, but not what he calls ... quote ... "first-class nuts."

avatarWhat I like is the brevity of the article, sorry not the article itself just the amount of words expended in explanation.

"Message understood Obi Wan.... I'll past it along.... you know to.... those other ......Okay I'll shut up Lord"

"Satan blah blah blah trying to REDIRECT blah blah blahGod will maintain the earth till Jesus return's OK Got it."

I kinda like this nut case hangs himself with his own words.

I just hate it when they (You know who Im talking about) get all clever and try to drown me and, possibly others,in their words.
I always feel sorta wet, damp, dont know how to describe it, soggy? after reading people like alvin.

avatarYes, the same Falwell (and Pat Robertson) who reckoned that the 911 attacks were the result of gays, lesbians, ACLU, pagans... the list goes on.

The Urban Dictionery sums him up pretty well (you'll grin at these)

The best thing about people like Falwell, Robertson, Hinn et al is that they do a lot of the spade work for us by their ludicrous remarks. The notion of "giving them enough rope to hang themselves" should be encouraged.

In 2004 Cardinal Biffi described the antichrist as "walking among us"

If anyone sees any pacifists or ecologists be very wary they might be the antichrist.

Indeed, he never really gets into that, does he? Jesus will care for earth until he returns: check. Christians should be responsible environmentalists: huh?? Oh wait, I know, we must be using that special "god-logic" here.

Sometimes people are skeptical of the viewpoint that Sam Harris in particular pushes very strongly, that the Christian fundamentalism associated with this "second coming" bullshit is really extremely scary for the future of our civilization. In just a few words, Falwell has dramatically justified Harris's fear.

avatarLet us not forget that an Inconvenient Truth uses scary propaganda such as Manhattan being underwater in 50 years when in actuality, according to the new IPCC report, Manhattan will be slightly moist in a hundred years time, which won't bother those of us with flying cars and jet packs. Al Gore is an environmental fundamentalist with a well-meaning agenda, and should be busy updating his facts, but the facts just aren't scary enough to sell wind farms and plug-in hybrids, so he will undoubtedly continue to scare the masses into believing whatever he believes to further fund his consulting firm...

...why can't we just want cleaner air for the sake of breathing easier? The inconvenient truth is that people are scared animals, they're scared of car crashes (bigger vehicles calm them) and they're scared of the dark (every light in their house has to be on). People must be cured of their need to suck the resources out of existence, until then we're destined to live in a loop...

Indeed, that was a rather...unfortunate thing for Dr. Falwell to say. As a Christian biology major, I recognize the need for us to be good stewards of the earth. Unfortunately, Dr. Falwell simply isn't as educated on the issue as he should be to comment on it.

Of course, there are many good things that he has to say. He does have a rather rough exterior, but having seen the balanced view of him (I go to LU), he's really not as terrible as the media makes him out to be. Yeah, sometimes I find myself cringing in convocation, but there are other times when he can be very inspirational.

I think what alot of people forget is that he comes from a backround where coarseness is not necessarily looked down upon. I know I'm going to get alot of flack for this, but understand I am no way defending his statement; I'm just pointing out that the media presents a rather unbalanced view of him.

Comment from tomjlawson: " Let us not forget that an Inconvenient Truth uses scary propaganda such as Manhattan being underwater in 50 years when in actuality, according to the new IPCC report, Manhattan will be slightly moist in a hundred years time"

It's more acccurate to say that the IPCC gives the 90% likely scenario of what could happen in 50 years. And "An Inconvenient Truth" gives the 1% likely scenario.

When making a risk assessment of potential cost, it's not unreasonable to consider the 1% scenario..

(if there is a 99% chance that a large asteroid will barely miss the earth in 50 years, would you characterize warning the public of the devestating risk presented by the 1% scenario of the asteroid hitting the earth as "scary propaganda"? The fact that the 99% scenario is cost-free does little to mitigate the need for someone to sound the alarm.)

Since you attend Liberty, I'm curious if you were part of the Liberty group at Richard Dawkins presentation at Randolph-Macon Woman's College. Also, maybe you could let us know what kind of discussions the students had after, and what kind of explanations (excuses) Rev. Falwell had for the students.

From watching the videos it seemed like the Liberty students were completely unprepared for the level of debate with Prof. Dawkins. Did some of the students do as RD suggested and resign from LU to get a proper education from a better university?

Well, the news channels are more than happy to taunt us with the idea of an asteroid hitting the earth all day until we tune in at 11 and find out it's actually a 1% chance, but that's not propaganda that's just selling soap. It's when the person traveling the world with a slide show about the 1% chance just happens to sell asteroid-impact insurance, that is when it is propaganda. Listen, I'm all for changing the sick ways people gorge themselves on non-renewable resources. I already drive a tiny car, I live in a small townhouse, my carbon footprint is well below the average, but telling people that the WTC memorial is going to be under 20 feet of water if you don't unplug power-sucking appliances and drive a hybrid? Come on, that's Bush saying there are WMD in Iraq.

Try as Gore might, he's never going to stretch 7-30 cm into 20 feet! But telling Manhattanites that the water is going to be ankle-deep in a century's time and that they'll have invest in a good pair of galoshes is not going to get them to ditch their gluttonous lifestyles. As it turns out, the inconvenient truth isn't the warming, or the cooling, or the smog, or any of the regional climate fluctuations, it's the lifestyle sacrifices that humans have to make in order to survive, but all of the sheep that Falwell represents are missing the point and look at it like it's a fancy weather report...

The movie poster should not have a power plant spewing a hurricane, that's impersonal, the hurricane should be coming out of the tailpipe of an SUV. Nothing would say it better.

avatarThe global warming hysteria has nothing to do with any bible. It's certainly the left's religion in the face of other science, but what's new. Unstoppable Global Warming by Fred Singer and Dennis Avery is worth reading.

Global Warming is nothing more than politics attempting to create hysteria in order to tax our dollars even further. It's irresponsible.

Yes, we should find ways to conserve and to recycle; these are solid ideas for our existence. But really! Most people don't even know the difference between carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide.

There's nothing like people spouting off about a subject for which they've done none of their own personal research into any of the facts on either side. "Oh, I read it in the Mirror" or "I read it in the NY Times" - yes, because these are the standards by which news reporting is being held accountable.

Falwell is an idiot, but it has nothing to do with global warming, it has to do with his schizophrenia about talking to god.

As my grandmother used to say, "Even a blind pig finds an ear of corn once in awhile." Falwell is unquestionably an idiot, but he did get one statement correct, "the jury is still out." As Al Gore likes to remind the media every time someone reports on his self promoting program to buy carbon footprint futures from himself, "people just like to attack the messenger instead of hearing the message."

It amazes me how the bulk of this secular humanist crowd will blindly follow a leader like Al Gore down the "faith-based" ecology path to worship at the feet of Gaia.

Aren't these the same people who were promoting the idea of global cooling thirty years ago? Have they come up with an explanation for the cooling of the oceans within only the past three years?

When "science" becomes more about fostering support for only one side of an unresolved issue, it ceases to be science and risks becoming a religion.

I wouldn't make such a sweeping statement for fear of ending up with a face-full of egg. Without doing any personal research on global warming, I would be inclined to accept the verdict given by the large majority of scientists that it is a fact. The recent evidence presented by the British Antarctic Survey confirms that huge chunks of Antarctica are melting. Perhaps unawareness is causing you to make a faulty judgment; the USA has a survey team there also, but it wouldn't surprise me if their findings were suppressed by the Bush government; keeping the population ill-informed and scared, is a favourite control method of theirs.

Dreamer's Dilemma said:

"Have they come up with an explanation for the cooling of the oceans within only the past three years?"

You seem to be using this as an argument against GW when it fact, it actually supports it! The increase in GW does not follow a linear curve; it has irregularly-spaced humps and dips in it. Although it's true that surface ocean water has cooled a little since 2003, it pales into insignificance compared with the overall temperature rise, the oceans are significantly warmer than they were thirty years ago. An understanding of basic scientific principles would cause me to expect ocean levels to fall if there was a genuine overall cooling, instead, they're rising due to GW-induced thermal expansion and the melting of ice.

Perhaps both you gentlemen were kept in the dark about the plight of the people of Vanuatu; they're desperately trying to get a nation to take them as refugees because their island homeland is disappearing underwater due to GW. I thought this was global news, am I to understand that this never reached American ears?

It's not Falwell's position on Global Warming per se which is scary. What's scary is the reasons he gives for taking that position. "Satan is misleading us from evangelism", and "Jesus is going to take care of the Earth, until he returns." His followers don't give a damn about the subject under discussion. They want to hear the dogma: Jesus and Satan and Fire and Brimstone. Falwell can put any injunction he wants in between those buzzwords, and they'll submit to his direction.

More Falwell nonsense. The fundie jury may still be out - it probably always will be - but the real jury made up of sane scientists returned its verdict a few weeks ago.

Global Warming like evolution, is a fact.

I just did a little research and found that NASA scientists now think that melting ice may be becoming the dominant factor in sea-level rise which would account for recent ocean cooling, although cooling dips have been noticed on a decadal basis. The general ocean temperature trend is of course, still rising.
