avatarRichly deserved (although, to be honest, it is hard to see how they could have decided otherwise - what other author has been so influential?)

This is excellent, but what Dawkins really deserves is the Templeton Prize. Congratulations indeed!

isn't it about time somebody in the know raised the possibility of a knighthood?

A peerage would be better, at least until the final stage of House of Lords reform is completed. That would not only be an honour, but it would give him a voice in our legislature.

The wind of change is blowing through this country. Whether the religious like it or not, this growth of rational consciousness is a literary fact and they must take account of it.

Congratulations to our glorious messiah.

 avatarCongratulations!

A depressingly predictable writeup in the Guardian though, they just can't let it go, can they?

avatarYeay! I'm so proud lol! As for the knighthood/peerage i think the establishment is still too anglican to give baubles to a vocal atheist. Besides I consider Dawkins a man of the people and don't want him to become Lord or Sir.

Hey hey hey... Very nice! Congrats RD!

Hmm. I thought they had gotten the message about that whole "literary spat" thing being a fraud, after RD sent his explanation to them. In fact, I thought they had offered an apology to RD. What's going on here? Do we need to write letters?

avatarI hope this doesn't sound too fawning, but I have to agree to some extent with Shaker. There seems to have been a recent renaissance in science publishing for the general public, but Dawkins has been consistently working at making science accessible and exciting for decades.

I admit that there would be delicious irony seeing an honour for one of the most well-known and active atheists bestowed by the head of the Church of England. On the other hand, I am sure that many fellow scientists (like me) see the FRS after Dawkins name as an honour that far exceeds anything that could come from goverment.

avatarFantastic! Richard Dawkins sweeps the baord with everything he enters! The man is an unstoppable juggernaut of reason, mowing down the pseudoscience and irrationality of the age! Magnificent!
Now, if there's only some way to win the Templeton Prize without compromising your ethics, Richard...

20. Comment #28330 by Graham on March 28, 2007 at 7:01 pm

avatarHmmm...yes along with those other illustrious authors...like Jamie Oliver and Kelly Osborne by the look of the photo gallery. I think it's more of a useful platform to popularise the naturalistic world view rather than any great honour. Nice one nevertheless.

As for the Templeton, Dan Dennett said it best..."Richard, if ever you should come into hard times....." and since right now hard times are out of the question, the hell with the Templeton. BUT

For the umteenth time it's time for the Nobel in Literature.

avatarPoor Peter Kay, he got his award presented by Cherie Blair, please, if you see him before I do send my condolences!

Not that I want to disparage Peter Kay in any form because I think he is an amazing comedian. He has a great joke about how he prayed to god to get him a new bike when he was young and was told that was wrong, so he went and stole someone else's and prayed for forgiveness still makes me giggle!

I heard precisely the same joke from Emo Phillips. (in fact it was so identical it didn't even substitute some other type of stolen item - it also used a bike.) I think someone's been taking someone else's material (not sure who had it first).

On the topic, yeah - Congrats to Dawkins - but I think the book award is better than a knighthood. Knighthood has been so watered down now - I doubt that musicians, writers, and actors are going to be defending Britain any time soon.

Hearing Professor Dawkins interview with Terry Gross of National Public Radio's "Fresh Air" programme left me feeling all the more inspired and hopeful.

It may be his birthday, but it is he who is giving out the gifts.

Thank you!

I didn't notice the look on Dara O'Briain's face, however, it must be noted that he too is an atheist.

 avatarexcellent news richard, congratulations!
just watched the programme up to author of the year award which to that point was definately
not rivetting tv.
after seeing the lovely prof accepting
his award with humility and gratefulness i turned
the tv off. good to see someone real win a well-
deserved award, and as the hardback is now only
£15 perhaps a few more people will get the message.

Thanks for posting the video now. Thank goodness it's just the bit with the award in it, though, eh?

Congratulations Prof. Dawkins for getting the science message out to the mainstream. Richard and Judy - this is where it's at.
