Video Pop Tech Lecture

Richard Dawkins

Reposted from:

Richard Dawkins believes science's ability to admit ignorance is one of its greatest strengths. On the flip side, he proposes that faith remains arrogant and all too certain of its validity without any rational set of proofs.

As offensive as many of my colleagues find him, I am always pleased with the eloquence and clarity of Dr. Dawkins' lectures. Thank you for this one!

Eloquent as always. Entirely inoffensive.

It's difficult to see how anyone could disagree with his arguments.

The world needs to change and it must start in the classroom.

As excellent as ever, clear, concise, amusing, inspiring. I was especially pleased to hear so many of my heroes quoted.

avatarThough I have heard or read Dawkins discussing many of the points made in this vid, his delivery was superb--focused, energetic, and entertaining. I really enjoyed this one.

Algebratheist, you only think he slipped up..I think he is adding weight to my theory that ancient astronauts killed the dinosaurs to make room for the mutant pod people know as humans...

or not.

Excellent lecture. I am emailing it to some of my more, ah, excitable Christian associates.

avatarLong time visitors here will have heard most of this before, but Dawkins executes the arguments well as always.

As offensive as many of my colleagues find him...

I don't understand this, I've heard Dawkins many times and have never thought him offensive. People who find Dawkins' attacks on falsehoods personally offensive, are merely indicating insecurity about their beliefs.

avatarCdat: Love your comment: "my theory that ancient astronauts killed the dinosaurs"

There is something so beautifully von Daniken-esque about that - love it!

Oh yes, worth remembering it was 30 years ago that Von Daniken got owned by the BBC's Horizon....

I especially liked the bit about the biologist who had such humility (and indeed joy) in accepting a disproof of his theory of the golgi apparatus. That was a very moving anecdote.

 avatarExcellent.

Here is another excellent video - from back in 2002 - when RD was apparently getting revved up to write TGD. Interesting to hear the state of his thinking at that time.

 avatarI second sane1's "Excellent".

Machinus, a question: do those colleagues find the man Richard Dawkins offensive, or do they find the ideas Richard Dawkins expounds to be offensive? If it is the former, I offer you my condolence and wish you the best of luck in finding new colleagues.

It is an excellent lecture but he seems to recycle/repakage his material quite a bit, they all sound kind of similar. A longer version of this lecture has been given in Mcgill University in 2006 on the strangeness of science. Except for the beginning part about faith this lecture is a word for word rendition of a portion of the Mcgill lecture.

I would like to see him speaking more spontaneously instead of reading from notes. It would add some variations even if he is making the same points, at least it wouldn't be a word for word replay.
