The last straw

Created on Aug 31 2010
Dear Mr. Dawkins,
There are few books indeed that I read with such enjoyment as The God Delusion. Your capability of logical reasoning and proving arguments is fascinating. I have to admit that your book was the last straw in my decision to officially exit the Slovenian Roman Catholic Church. As many Slovenians, I was a non-practicing Catholic, baptised soon after birth as family tradition, although my parents were not religious themselves. In my young adult years, when still searching for my identity, I got involved in Christian religion quite intensively for several years, but then abandond the practice completely. Despite that, when I was married 5 years ago, my wife and I also had a Church service beside a civil one, which I now regret.
The thing is that after the fall of Communism and breakup of Yugoslavia, the Catholic Church in Slovenia became more and more aggressive in everyday life and also in politics. Mind you, the Slovenian Roman Catholic Church sided with the Italian and German occupational forces against the Slovenian Partisans, for which they never apologised. But did they ever apologise for jovial things such as the Inquisition, obstruction of scientific progress, and for supporting most of the backward, oppressive, right - winged countries? Of course not. Not even to mention their latest pedophilic affairs.
When I wrote the Church a letter demanding an official partition with the Sacred Institution, I explained that I had lost my religion a long time ago, but that I would still have remained their member if I found actions of the Catholic Church honorable, reasonable and just. In other words, you don't really have to be religious to remain a club member. But as this was not the case, I prefered to exit. Their reply was one of an offended, slightly senile tyrant father when an adult son tells him he is going on his own (I don't even want to repeat it). A hundred years ago, they would have burned me at the stake, heh heh.
Anyway, I would really like to thank you. I recommended your book to many of my friends and relatives. I think it is a book that everyone should read.
Best personal regards,
