Dear Prof Dawkins
I was reading through some of the letters which you have received and was especially intrigued by the 'ugly' letters written mostly by 'Christian' people. To think that they are representatives of their faith/god.
My husband and I have been atheists for more than 2 years now, as well as our grown children. We were very passionate Christians with our own ministry in which our children were also involved. That is, until my husband stood up one morning to preach and was suddenly confronted by his own doubts. He closed down the ministry that day and told the people that until he had a clear cut answer, he would not continue. That was more than 2 years ago.
We only recently started reading The God Delusion, after our daughter gave it to us, and so far we have found it very interesting - a real eye-opener when looking back at what we had so passionately believed in. My husband has been an avid blogger since we became atheists to try to convince people of the delusion of religion (see: www.danielcoetzee-issues.tumblr.com)
On the 11th of December 2012, on my husband's birthday, we were driving home after having watched the new Bond movie at the cinema. Even though it was after 8 pm it was not pitch dark yet. Suddenly my husband told us to look at an object moving above the ocean in the sky. We stopped the car and got out. It was the most amazing thing we have ever seen. This strange object was moving across the sky in a mist (it was a perfectly clear evening). Then it disappeared. My daughter phoned hysterically on the cell phone and asked if we'd seen the object in the sky. They had gone to the movies with us but lived on the opposite side of town. Eventually we looked on a website www.uforsa.co.za and more than a hundred different people in different locations had seen the exact same thing. Even a pilot commented on the site and said that it was not an aircraft at all.
Now this is the first time that we have ever encountered something so bizarre (besides religion, of course) and we were quite excited about it. I truly believe that there is intelligent life on other planets, beings such as ourselves, only mentally more 'evolved' than us. Programs such as Through the Wormhole and Ancient Aliens has also added to this belief. It we hadn't personally witnessed such a phenomenon I would still have been a skeptic. But with the added benefit of being atheists we are now open minded enough to explore previously forbidden areas.
Thank you for your work. We will continue to read and share the information contained in your books.
