1. Science of the Soul? 'I Think, Therefore I Am' Is Losing Force

Comment #52641 by wilberforce.parry on June 27, 2007 at 3:32 pm

I see no reason for Descartes' point to lose its force. Surely any animal that thinks on any level "is", to a certain degree. I don't see why we have to presume that thought processes at a human level are necessary for this consciousness. Descartes was saying nothing about the idea of an eternal soul, all he was stating was an idea on proof for a personal existence.

I thought this was brilliant. It (or something very similar) would make a great school project (obviously depending on the complexity of it). MatLab is widely used in schools and universities. I wonder if it is possible to see the code in detail? I also wonder if it would be possible to programme something similar in VBA?

Great stuff Brian,

I can see how people may view your videos as slightly patronising, but only if they are people who are well versed on the topics involved. Ultimately, your videos offer an easy to grasp, well presented and unoffensive summary of very complicated issues that some people may find hard to reason in their minds (especially after years of indoctrination). I feel that they could form the basis of research to form and present a very interesting educational and historical documentary of some kind at some point... always the problem of funding though! Perhaps you should approach Jerry Falwell's congregation!

Great review. Gives a realistic insight into Hitchens' style.

I would also buy him a present. This post has shocked me. I really don't know what to think. It just doesn't cease to amaze me how full of conviction people can be about something that is so patently lacking in evidence and utterly improbable.
