Dershowitz is wrong again here. Religion in America persists and grows because Americans face uncertain futures. They can lose their health or employment at any time, and run the risk of becoming impoverished overnight. That uncertainty fuels religion, which both comforts them in times of stress and recruits a social group to provide support. There is an inverse correlation between the health care status of countries and their religiosity. All the open market in religion does is produce proliferation of sub-cults which compete furiously for their share of the $100 billion (tax free) profits of the religion industry.
3. Why Richard Dawkins is right on alternative medicine - but not when it comes to religion

I thought the golden rule was "Do unto others...," a much lower standard than "Love thy neighbor...." Since the Christian churches are just another advocate of ethical opinion, I assume they will readily give up their government support in England and their tax-exempt status in the U.S. As for 'worship at the altar of science', the man who wrote that understands neither worship nor science.

The claim that the printing press was invented for the devout replication of the Bible is risible. Gutenberg printed several things, and hit upon the Bible project as one likely to make him some money, along with a Latin grammar and some poetry. If you are a devout Christian, it could only be for the glory of the divine one that the press was invented and used--faith is blind to the facts.

By all means, let atheists of all stripes speak out. We need the quiet strength of Carl Sagan, the rapier wit of Sam Harris, the slashing attack of Richard Dawkins, and, as it seems, the flamethrower blast of Christopher Hitchens. Every one who reads any of these books will be better armed to resist theocracy and the God hypothesis. We need more voices still--satire, humor, poetry, mucic, and more stories from everyone. Remember, the current religions have had more than a thousand years to nourish their deceptions. It will be yet a while before their castles crumble.
