Is it just me or does this suggestion of others that may have "made it" out there being subjects of fucking Christ piss all over the grandeur of such a discovery if it were to happen.
It's a fucking embarrassment to hear peers of my age saying such things.
This bloke really hasn't a clue of how important such a discovery would be.

This smells like Christian science to me. They've already got the conclusion and date. Now it's all about trying different ways of arriving at that date using stuff that sounds like science.

Artificial selection of submissive religious women in action.
I guess women, in what ever form, even daugthers, are nothing more than property in a Muslim society.

I don't think Richard comes here for an ego boost hehe. Besides I think he'd probably agree with you. Richard has said before he really looks up to Dan.

Richard needs to carry an iPod around with this video on, so when some moron interviewer tries to call him shrill for his analogy to child abuse, he can just shove this video in their faces and wait for THEM to respond.

I've just thought of David Deutsch too. I was impressed with his TED talk as it was quite entertaining and informative. He also seems well informed on biology and computing too. I'm not sure if he'd be much up for jumping into the public eye though!
Although I now think Carolyn Porco would be a really excellent choice. After watching her TED talk she makes it clear how she thinks it's a shame nobody is really aware of the discoveries being made in our own Solar System by robotic probes.
The same goes with her Beyond Belief '06 talk. How many people here were blown away by the picture of Saturn backlit by the sun? This is the sort of stuff that needs to be shouted about to get people interested.

Does this mean Richard isn't going to make any more general purpose science promotion/unreason bashing video productions?
Neil deGrasse Tyson really inspired me with his impromptu talk about the life of an Astronomer and the humbling experience that comes with it at Beyond Belief 06.
We need another Cosmos. Nothing fancy, no high-budget CGI. Just a really patient and clear host with a real love of science. Even if just to remove the damage done to Quantum Theory by the various Anthropocentrists and New-Age soap-dodgers.
It's annoying having read The Great Demotions chapter of Pale Blue Dot by Carl, to then hear all these mystical self-exhalting interpretations of Quantum Theory.

Richard Morgan:
What's wrong with me viewing Richard Dawkins as a person hero of mine amongst many others like Carl Sagan, V. S. Ramachandran and David Deutsch as examples?
Do you think I'd cheer them no matter what they say and do? Or to word it differently, do you think they're my heros for their names and faces, and not what they say and do?

Maybe it's because Richards accent is often used to portray evil villans in cheesy American action films?
Either that or it sounds like she's offended by the idea that forcing religious views on to her children is abuse?
I think Richard is certainly more precise and polite in his books than Hitchens is.
I mean, wasn't it hitchens that said about someone who just died "he was so full of shit if he'd had an enema before he died his remains would fit in a matchbox" or somesuch like that?
Or maybe it's exactly because Hitchens is known as a journalist, that he can get away with what he does, due to the auto-respect religion has when questioned scientifically?
I guess what counts is one person has said something alot of people, not just of this website think is utterly false.
Infact I bet even a fair amount of Theists would agree.

How could it naturally be anything but physical gene molecule "survival".
Isn't it like arguing about the effects the RPM of an engine has on a car, compared to the effects of in cylinder conditions have on a car?
Isn't it just about the level of abstraction you look at a problem in?
Or are the two camps as "apparently" irreconcilable as Quantum theory and Einsteins theory?
But then again if physical gene selection can explain such things in principal where's the problem. It sounds to me like group selection is Newtons theory to Einsteins theory of Gravity.
However I'm a newbie and my entire biology education stems from Richards books :P

Comment #106761 by EeekiE on January 3, 2008 at 12:22 pm
@prettygoodformonkeys
It's still not relevant to my point.
My point was that trilobites are extinct, like any mind that wants to leave the fate of our species to mother nature will be.
It was also said in the context of Humanity, in what ever form it will exist, if it will still exist at the death of the sun. The sun is not scheduled to die in the next 300,000,000 years.
Therefore the fact Trilobites lived for 300,000,000 doesn't make the darndest bit of difference to the sentence I used it in.
The average lifespan of a species is when the species has no control over it's evolution, and is left to natural selection.
Which is the entire point of what I was saying.
Now do you understand?
Have you actually any comment on the rest of my post?

I know you dont want to kill yourself. I'm well aware, because I read it.
This is why I suggested natural selection as favouring minds that don't as a possible reason why you don't want to kill yourself, and thusly why you reject it. I cannot read your mind. If you think there is another reason, please tell.

Diacanu,
Right here:
"Then everything I ever did, thought, dreamed, imagined, said, wrote, created, is a meaningless illusion, and I should just go kill myself."
I found your reply obscure, which looking at the history of this thread seems to lead to people putting words in your mouth right?
Care to clarify why you think all of your actions would be as an illusion? if your mindset was selectively removed from the "memepool"?
If that's not what you meant, care to clarify what indeed you did mean. As sarcastic and patronising as you like I don't mind.

Yes I read the entire article.
I don't care how long the trilobites lived for as it is irrelevent to the meaning of the sentence I used it in.

Because natural selection has favoured minds that don't want to kill themselves maybe?

I can think of a few fantasy directions we could head in.
Being able to see more of the electromagnetic spectrum with our eyes would be nice. Maybe being able to hear a broader range of frequencies.
Better tollerances to extremes of temperatures/pressures/radiation could come in handy if we are ever to leave our mote of dust.
We certainly need to if we are to survive the death of our Sun, and Natural Selection -wont- -help- -us- here.
Likewise Natural Selection is unlikely to favour those who live longer, so if that's a goal, we'd have to do-it-ourselves.
I think getting to a stage where deaths are being caused by 'unnatural' causes would be a good start. I think it would then also favour the people that take it easy.
Nature will not help us survive the end of 'this' world. If it's decided we want ourselves, our sentience# to survive the end of this world, and you don't believe in a saviour agent, only we can do something about that. Natural selection will -not- -help- -us- here. Theres plenty of supporting evidence for this.
If natural selection has branded any one thing into every piece of life on this planet, it's to survive. To help ourselves is the only way I can forsee survival can be acheived.
It's do or die.
If you don't want that (not that anyone here has any say in it), then your kind of mind will die. It will be artificially selected as weak, and will be one with the Trilobytes.
Diacanu,
Smile, you're on the internet!
24. Interview with Richard Dawkins: On Christmas
Comment #102540 by EeekiE on December 23, 2007 at 7:14 am
Yeah that's fair comment however there are a fair few song lyrics that I'd like as poetry even without a melody.
I think some people just can't grasp that the same action can be performed for a different reason than why they do it. The fact Christmas has pagan origins only shows that belief, or even the tale of Christ isn't required to do exactly the same thing for none Christian reasons.
25. Interview with Richard Dawkins: On Christmas
Comment #102516 by EeekiE on December 23, 2007 at 4:32 am
I seem to have been misunderstood. I was not saying it's wrong to not enjoy singing Christmas songs, or that everyone should enjoy singing Christmas songs, as that would be a stupid point to make, and I didn't make it.
I'm saying to suggest an Atheist singing Christmas songs as hypocritical is a pathetic argument in the same way I can get together and jolly well sing songs about the story of Santa at this festive time of year without believing in him. It's a part of my culture.
What is wrong with enjoying fiction, if indeed it is fiction?
I don't sing Christmas songs. I don't enjoy singing in groups.
Rchard Mrgon:
Care to clarify your reply to my comment that said the actions of modern Christians are not as offensive as the actions of modern Islam? Do you disagree with this?
"What level of offensive is tolerable to allow one to enthusiastically join in with rituals and songs?"
That's up to the individual isn't it. Do you believe Richard decided to celebrate Christmas BECAUSE of it's level of offensiveness? I celebrate it because that's what my culture does. In the same way my culture has another fictional, mostly inoffensive charactor that's celebrated this time of year called Santa.
26. Interview with Richard Dawkins: On Christmas
Comment #102443 by EeekiE on December 22, 2007 at 7:35 pm
Being enthusiastic about Christmas, which incidently has none-Christian origins, and singing songs about it is no different to being enthusiastic about the latest episode of Lost, which is also a popular story in modern culture.
There are plenty of fan-sites for the Lost series with people coming up with theories and making their own tribute videos, and not one of the believes it to be true.
The story of Christmas is a widespead cultural event in Western society. To say an Atheist shouldn't sing Christmas songs relating to Jesus, is to say an educated person shouldn't sing Christmas songs relating to Santa, as deep down they know Santa isn't real. It's a completely bullshit arguement, and it should be exposed as such.
If you sang 'Santa Claus is coming to town' does that mean you believe in Santa???!!?!!
Pathetic argument.
What's wrong with fiction, if indeed it IS fiction?

Richard Morgan:
The God of the old Testament is portrayed as a cunt in the Bible.
Lots of things in the Bible are not followed by modern Christians.
The actions of modern Christians aren't that offensive compared to it's peers such as Islam.
The worst examples of Christianity CURRENTLY spread ignorance and stupidity rather than death and torture as with Islam.
How can you not grasp that? Or are you trying to feel important?
