A whole seminar just for you? Go Dr. Dawkins!

Psh. Thanks but no thanks on that dark matter bridge to nowhere! The money? Oh, uh, I, uh, gave it back.

I'm so glad CNN is running this story. We need more stories like this out there. In fact, I'm gonna click on the "Email This to a Friend" link a few times and make sure it stays on the "Most Emailed" list.

There are laws even in the U.S. about language. You can't scream FUCK YOU to a 5-year-old in the checkout lane of the grocery store.
I'd be all over this if it just said "Jesus Is Not Real" but the profanity kinda takes it to a different "standards and practices" law field.

This may show my ignorance, but what if we could engineer bacteria that evolved not to be harmful to humans? I'm going to use a simple example because I'm a computer-scientist, not a biologist.
If there was a flesh-eating bacteria that existed, and we put it into a flask that had mostly plants, and some flesh, and kept cutting down the amount of flesh such that evolving to eat plants would make it easier to survive, then as they evolved, eventually they'd lose the ability to eat flesh, and we could introduce them into the wild, there they would have plenty of plants to eat and probably would end up dominating the original strain in number.
If this a viable idea in the future? Or should I just write a movie about it?

19. 'Boycott Worked': Compass Flops - Opening Weekend $26 Million; Narnia $63 Million
Comment #97066 by happinessiseasy on December 11, 2007 at 11:01 am
I loved the movie, personally, but then again, I generally hate the movies that do really well at the box office.
To say it was a failure is an overstatement. To say that it was a failure because of the boycott is even more far-fetched. To say that it sends a message to atheists about keeping our "beliefs" (lack of, perhaps?) to ourselves that the movie failed, because of the boycott, is just ludicrous.
The most likely reason for the opening weekend being, let's face it, not stellar, is probably just because the series hasn't caught on in America yet. In Britain, the books have been wildly successful since they were released in the early 90's, and they will be here, too, it's just a matter of getting the word out. The movie will likely jump-start interest and the books will take off. The second movie will be bigger I imagine.
20. Egypt mufti says female circumcision forbidden
Comment #52207 by happinessiseasy on June 26, 2007 at 1:17 pm
Ugh, As a circumcised male, I must object. Circumcision has never caused me any problems of any kind. Yes, it is pointless, but the same as female circumcision? absolutely not.
The Abrahamic faiths and the societies created or controlled by them have always been patriarchal in nature; if circumcision was truly damaging to male sexuality, these male-dominated societies would have gotten rid of the practice long ago.
You probably got circumcised when you were too young to remember it. I can't imagine being circumcised as an adult. But if I had my hand cut off when I was less than a year old, it wouldn't cause me any "discomfort" now. I'd be used to it. Just like you are.

I read every single comment on this page. I'm a militant Atheist. I live in a ass-backwards state in the U.S. I belong to the member of the North Alabama Freethought Association and am an official member of the Freedom from Religion Foundation.
However, I do see both sides to this argument. I am in no position to pay respects to any religious crap, but I feel like, unless provoked, personally, I don't have the right to start fights. I almost wish that someone would take away a right of mine so that I could have a much more valid reason for fighting it.
Certain things that I fight against are things that people find silly and petty. We have God Bless America license plates, paid for my the state. When I go to vote, my polling place is a church. I have no choice but to go there, and I hate it. Things like this bother me, but I feel like I have no right to really take up arms unless something really big is affecting me.
In other words, give me fuel, ammunition, a reason to fight and I will fight to the death.
Also, I love Susan B. Anthony's quote. I think changing the words, this should be our rallying call: "Theists their rights and nothing more; Atheists their rights and nothing less."

While I understand what you're saying, Thrall, getting someone to admit that fundamentalism is wrong is one small step. He's still saying it's ok to believe in things for no reason whatsoever, and I don't think we should give people any wiggle room on that. It's complete nonsense, and I won't stand for even moderate Christians (who actually make less sense to me than conservative ones). I might seem intolerant, but I'm fighting intolerance, so I'm gonna hold my ground. My avatar is even plastered on the back window of my car, along with the ad for Richard's book.

Followers of creationism believe in the literal truth of the Genesis account in the Bible that God created the world in six days.
It bothers me that the AP would say "that God created the world" instead of "that a god created" or "that their god created." It shows a slight religious bias.
26. Panel discussion on atheism where no atheists are included
Comment #21025 by happinessiseasy on February 7, 2007 at 10:35 am
I sent them an email. That is so horrible. This is what I wrote:
"Your show that aired on January 31st (Paula Zahn Now: Karen Hunter, Debbie Schlussel, Stephen A. Smith on Atheism, transcript at http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0701/31/pzn.01.html) had a panel on atheism where there was not a single atheist involved! This is horribly irresponsible journalism and reflects poorly on both the network and atheists. It would be nice in the future if your panelists were more fairly balanced in regard to the material they are discussing."

I think this will help show who our society really pays attention to, not just what mainstream media tells us we read.

It's articles like this that get me through the day. I work with stupid fundies who will argue with me any chance they get about the age of the earth, and will say asinine things like "Evolution has been disproven."
But every time I get my hopes up just a little, I bring myself back down to earth and realize that it will still take lots and lots of time for things to change.
