1. Faith no more as World Youth Day fans flames of disbelief

Comment #189957 by Skeptic Pete on June 7, 2008 at 11:38 pm

I wonder if any of our media will have the courage to run any negative stories about blind faith during this circus.

When I saw the wooden cross being proudly manhandled through our parliament house a few months ago it reminded me of The Emperors New Clothes.

Here they all were, young and old alike, the rich the poor, the Labour, the Liberal, the men, the women, kissing and fawning over what is basically a grotesque execution device.

They say it's about life. Eternal life.

But it's not. It's all about death.

Sick and sad.

The poll on the web site

http://www.myspace.com/expelledthemovement

shows that as of 0200, 28th April 2008, approx. 428,000 people have voted, of which 97.7 % were opposed to the statement that

Do you think the theory of Intelligent Design should be taught in our education system ?

Have they removed the poll? I can't get it to load.

4. Atheists claim censorship by billboard company

Comment #146308 by Skeptic Pete on March 18, 2008 at 11:07 pm

In my home town of Newcastle Australia there's a HUGE billboard with a very simple message...

"Jesus is the answer"

I just wish I had the balls to grab a can of spraypaint and write "If Jesus is the answer then you're asking the wrong questions".

5. A new website addition: Debate Points

My answer: Apart drom the fact that that's an ad hominem argument, you've bought into the falsehood that superstitious beliefs deserve respect and exemption from criticism. I care because I'm passionate about truth and reason and evidence and honest intellectual inquiry, I care because even as an Australian I'm concerned about the numerous theocracies in the world, I care because there's still many (fundamentally good) societies which criminalise homosexuality, euthanasia, abortions, and stem cell research and would rather cause further human suffering based on dogmas and conservativism rather than base their morality on the desire to improve people's lot, I care because the ID lobby is trying to influence what is taught in schools, I care because faith schools peddle superstition on trusting children, I care because a life without belief in God is rich and liberating and means that you don't have to feel guilty for enjoying the small things like lunch or sex, I care because the realisation that life is short gives you even greater impetus to achieve your greater ambitions in life, I care because the flipside of Pascal's Wager is that so many people are wasting their lives in meaningless ritual.

Absolutely, positively friggin brilliant!

6. Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams criticizes popular atheist writers

Comment #78563 by Skeptic Pete on October 13, 2007 at 3:54 pm

"When believers pick up Richard Dawkins or Christopher Hitchens, we may feel as we turn the pages: 'This is not it. Whatever the religion being attacked here, it's not actually what I believe in,'" the archbishop said.
------------------------------------------------

So they don't believe in virgin births, resurrections, miracles and an intercessionary deity after all?

"The religious believer says that moral integrity, self-introspection, honesty and trust are styles of living that connect with the character of an eternal and free agency, the agency most religions call God."

Hogwash.
