I agree that Hitchens came out on top in this "debate," and I haven't read his book on MT - still - if most of the things that MT wrote in her journal were like what was quoted, I don't think you can really take that as evidence of her not believing.

As a former Christian, like I'm sure a lot of the people here are, it's common to believe and yet struggle so hard with it. I should have the book and verse but wasn't it Paul that said "Lord I believe, please help me believe"? I'm all for bringing down icons of the faith but I'm not sure those sort of quotes are the method by which to do it. The exorcism bit is pretty telling though.

John Macarthur is the pastor of Grace Community Church in LA, near where I grew up. It's gotta be one of the, if not THE biggest evangelical church in LA. He's not fringe at all, that crackpot. I still have friends that probably were in the audience crying as he said this.
