I saw Brian Cox speaking at the Edinburgh Science Festival last year, and he was just as good then. Nothing new in this talk, except it's a bit more recent, but still enjoyable to watch. He's the sort of person to get young folk interested in science, given enough exposure.

The Boutwell family remind me a little bit of the Westboro church. They may not be anywhere near as big, but they just about match them when it comes to expressing their (frankly horrible)opinions, and in the indoctrination aspect. I remember watching the Louis Theroux episode with the WBC and thinking that the girl Louis went to school with (one of Fred Phelps' grand-daughters I think) seemed like she would be a really nice person if she could/would give up her family's beliefs. The children in this video seemed nice enough, and it really is a shame they have such irresponsible parents. It's clearly exploitation, and I think if anything can be done to stop it, it should be.
3. State Approves Evolution As 'Scientific Theory'

In a way this is a good thing I suppose, but it is a shame that the theory should still be regarded as "controversial". It's also slightly worrying that the vote was so close. What the fuck is going on over there?

I wonder how those children will cope when they reach sexual maturity. No doubt their parents will have informed them that if they give in to their urges they'll probably go to hell. Ana Carolina must be about there already, but it sounds as if her father has been helping her practice for some time.
One thing that wasn't really spoken about by anybody on that programme was friendship. Do any of those children have friends? Are they allowed friends, or would they lead them astray?

I'm a little confused, were these people in public housing or their own home?

I love Hugh Laurie, and I love House. I think some of his best performances though have been in his overtly comic roles in Blackadder, which of course stars the equally brilliant Rowan Atkinson. A favourite of mine:

A little bit of the scene has been cut, but it makes no real difference.

Darwin himself took some time to think about how his discoveries changed his personal views of religion... On p. 78 of the 1958 biography he recounts how his confidence in the idea of god:
"....has very gradually with many fluctuations become weaker."
With regard to the difficulty people have in shrugging off their religious indoctrination (my words, not his) he went on to observe:
"Nor must we overlook the probability of the constant inculcation in a belief in God on the minds of children producing so strong and perhaps an inherited effect on their brains not yet fully developed, that it would be as difficult for them to throw off their belief in God, as for a monkey to throw off its instinctive fear of a snake." (pp. 77-78).
Is this a quote from Dawkin's writings

I'm listening to a cd at the moment so I didn't have the sound on for that video. Having watched it, I'm glad I chose not to pause the cd. If there is sound in that video, I really don't want to hear it. Religion of peace indeed.

"Falling victim"? He makes it sound as if they are being indoctrinated at a young age. Religions seem to have the monopoly on that.
What a load of bollocks.

In my opinion, if Dennet had written a letter that stated his opinions regarding Islam in the strongest possible terms, it would only succeed in alienating some of the more moderate Muslims, and the more politically correct non-Muslims. It would just be another example of an atheist, horrid creatures that they/we are, showing a lack of (undeserved) respect towards Islam. That would help nobody.
Whether the letter he did write will help Sayed Parwiz Kambaksh, or anybody else, is debatable. However, I do think the tone of the letter is correct.

I'm surprised the case was able to get this far without anybody thinking it might be a good idea to ask the boy what he wants. For example, if this was a divorce in Scotland, a 12 year old would be asked for his/her opinion re contact arrangements. Surely the child's opinion should be considered when the case concerns removing a part of his body for purely religious reasons.

I personally wouldn't complain if all the young ladies are given purple, furry, pimp-suits after they become atheists. Might help us discover just how many atheists there are in the world. We will just need to make sure we don't mistake actual pimps for atheists, as that could very well end in tragedy.

Unless I've misread the article, a few people are making a mistake here. It says the chimps were taught to count from 1 to 9, not given the opportunity to memorise the sequence of numbers on the screen. They merely (though still impressively) remembered the order 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9. Note that the position of the spaces changes from one screen to the next.
16. Science can answer how questions but only religion can answer why questions
Comment #83566 by Fenriswolf on October 30, 2007 at 12:52 pm
I personally see no reason to believe we are here for a specific purpose anyway and so, to me at least, it's not even a valid assertion.
If there is a reason we are here, it is the same reason that monkeys, llamas, tigers and snails are here. Perhaps the religious should ask a tiger why we are here in order to try and get a non-biased opinion.

I would like to think that darwin2 is in fact trying to be ironic, and that his (her?) comments are just a pardoy of the average religious person trying to reconcile science with religion. Unfortunately it does not seem that way.
I would like to know where his/her (apologies if it has been made clear in this topic what sex d2 is. i'm also not on an awful lot and so not familiar with people) opinions regarding the "eternal soul" comes from if he/she is not part of any religion and has no time for dogma or anything of that kind. The same goes for reincarnation (which is apparently a law of physics, though who discovered this law i do not know) and karma.

WOW!! Good thing the fast talker in the video didn't hold the banana the other way around. It might not have fit his hand so well and would be pointing the other waywhen he tried to bite into it.
