1. Richard Dawkins Responds to Rabbi Shmuley Boteach

Comment #181362 by notsobad on May 17, 2008 at 3:28 am

Hitler was a Catholic pure and simple.

He was more into occult and Norse paganism, but not an atheist and definitely not a rationalist.

They should never visit churches in Europe either.

Don't tell me you don't have these in the US.

That's actually a serious concern.

4. Richard Dawkins Responds to Rabbi Shmuley Boteach

Comment #181351 by notsobad on May 17, 2008 at 2:36 am

he has even won a preaching competition!

Woah, is that anything like the competition with the prophets of Baal described in 1 Kings 18:24 onwards?

From my experience, it is best not to even react to narcissistic* busy bodies like Boteach. They don't address the actual argument and just start throwing red herrings in and playing the offended card to appeal to emotion.

*just his self-given title "America's rabbi" speaks volumes. The linked story just confirms this.

Why don't these busy bodies do some charity or something useful instead of being stupid?

8. Vatican: It's OK to believe in aliens

Comment #180730 by notsobad on May 15, 2008 at 4:27 pm

The church and catholics are not as homogeneous as some may think here.
While Vatican may accept evolution, it doesn't mean churches in other countries do or catholics do.

Nisbet and Mooney are both sanctimonious douchebags. I don't even know why scienceblogs keeps them around.

See my avatar.

Comment #180451 by notsobad on May 15, 2008 at 2:10 am

Vergil,
you mean red herring, not non sequitur.

But the post from the Vatican is the original red herring because this is a non-issue. They should talk about things that matter and bring misery to many people's lives every day.

11. The Dissent Of Darwin - The World Of Richard Dawkins

Comment #180446 by notsobad on May 15, 2008 at 1:42 am

Just because "it's obviously not essential" doesn't mean it doesn't have an evolutionary explanation...

Not just explanation but also advantage.
and are never on display.

You are doing it wrong :-)
Anyway, I think your friends were joking.

12. A natural selection

Comment #180237 by notsobad on May 14, 2008 at 12:25 pm

his theory of natural selection helped humans unlock some of the mysteries of life - maybe not the why, but the how.

Evolution tells us that there is no original why, only what we make of it.
Am I being dense, or does it seem that the belief that species alive today as a result of evolution through some version of Darwinian natural selection originating from some large organic compounds billions of year ago is DIRECTLY incompatible with a relgious belief of God as the creator of life and some 'special' status of humans as compared to other animals, or inanimate objects for that matter?!

It's incompatible. If Genesis is not true, there is no original sin. If there is no original sin, the rest of the book is pointless.
If someone accepts evolution and science, miracles are nonsense. If miracles are nonsense, the book is pointless.

13. Richard Dawkins discusses Einstein's new letters

Comment #180041 by notsobad on May 14, 2008 at 6:16 am

On other forums, I've already seen comments by theists claiming that Einstein's opinion is irrelevant.
That's true but it was theists who tried to use him as an authority to confirm their irrational beliefs.
I've also seen comments saying that Einstein is in hell for those words now, but those are just good old "high moral standards" of some of the deluded.

18. Childish superstition: Einstein's letter makes view of religion relatively clear

source?

20. My Response to Rabbi Shmuley Boteach

Comment #178600 by notsobad on May 11, 2008 at 5:09 pm

Saying the classic 'You scream like a baboon' would be more appropriate given the debate is about evolution.

Dawkins should have avoided this comparison for tactical reasons, but surely not for bloody political correctness.

I don't know whether he was actually born.

Comment #158438 by notsobad on April 10, 2008 at 2:08 pm

Or maybe god just didn't care 60 years ago.

29. Dawkins warns of human extinction

Comment #155354 by notsobad on April 4, 2008 at 11:36 am

"Secular fundamentalism is sweeping this nation and people are being deceived by the devil. The devil works through people.

"Mr Dawkins is the devil's speaker and he has expressed this boldly. He believes in evolution, that nothing produces everything.

As always, where are the so called progressive Christians dissociating from this insane rant?

33. Vatican: Islam surpasses Roman Catholicism as world's largest religion

35. 'We Make Our Own Heaven'

Comment #151627 by notsobad on March 29, 2008 at 4:45 am

This isn't strictly true. Although children don't pop out of the womb and immediately thank Jesus, they do tend to attribute intent to almost all happenings. Ie someone made the wind blow, etc. Now this is just normal developmental psychology but it more closely reduces to theism than atheism.

No it doesn't. I never attributed anything to supernatural causes simply because I figured that god did it is not an answer and I can learn the real causes or can learn that I don't know is a better answer if you actually don't know.

37. Sue Blackmore debates Alister McGrath

Comment #150540 by notsobad on March 27, 2008 at 4:53 am

McGrath is a sleazy hypocrite.
He uses sweet language and nice words and always evades any conflicts in the debates, but in writing, he gets shrill and just lies way too often.

Just compare any of his debates to this text from The Dawkins Delusion:
"Whereas Gould at least tries to weigh up the evidence, Dawkins simply offers the atheist equivalent of slick hellfire preaching, substituting turbocharged rhetoric and highly selective manipulation of facts for careful, evidence-based thinking."
"There's lots of pseudoscientific speculation.."
"Having read the ludicrous misrepresentations of religion which are such a depressing feature of The God Delusion, I very much fear that secularists would merely force their own dogmas down the throats of the same gullible children."

39. Police: Girl Dies After Parents Pray for Healing Instead of Seeking Medical Help

Comment #150143 by notsobad on March 26, 2008 at 1:45 pm

Where religious faith and bullshit are taught, it's no surprise that some people take both very seriously.

Which in itself is regarded as a virtue. It's a well thought-out con.

40. Police: Girl Dies After Parents Pray for Healing Instead of Seeking Medical Help

Comment #149979 by notsobad on March 26, 2008 at 11:31 am

Of course these people cannot understand that there is no place for a benevolent god in this world if they don't mind him letting their kid die because they are not screwed in his ass deep enough.

41. Wicked untruths from the Church

Comment #149667 by notsobad on March 26, 2008 at 4:51 am

clearthinker:
Indeed - noone should be allowed into office who has 'unfounded' religious beliefs. Are there any 'founded'? Ban everyone who has a religious belief. People should be tested and 'vetted'. Speaking of vets if they do not recant perhaps they should have a lobotomy to remove the infected part of their brain, or at least castrated so that they are not allowed to produce offspring who will be infected by the pernicious disease of religion. We need to rid our society of this virus. How else can we have a Brave New World?

Don't worry, not everybody would like to do things your way.

42. Wicked untruths from the Church

Comment #149595 by notsobad on March 26, 2008 at 1:32 am

"I am an atheist but" people are starting wake up?

And the usual message to religious people:
Do you want to irrationally limit your life because an adult man in a costume told you to?
Fine!
But don't expect the same from me.
And don't dare force these habits through laws.

45. Atheists claim censorship by billboard company

Comment #147238 by notsobad on March 20, 2008 at 4:09 am

Skeptic Pete. I think the question was "name an ancient hebrew prophet whose message of love and peace has been distorted by bullys and demagogues ever since in order to increase their personal wealth and manipulate the credulous"

Jesus has more than a few nasty comments in the Bible. Actually, he is the one that came with love me or burn forever.
Of course, that might have been all made up.

46. Religion 'linked to happy life'

Comment #147236 by notsobad on March 20, 2008 at 4:07 am

Tumara Baap,
in post 107, I suggested that dividing people into something as vague as believers and non-believers and then measuring something as subjective as happiness is pointless.

From my experience, in Europe a large number of "Christians" use this label only for traditional reasons. The ones that actually go to church, pray and so on are mostly old cute ladies, simpletons or douche bags buying their conscience back at church. Sure there are also Christians who are otherwise smart and rational, and they may use religion as a crutch.

47. Religion 'linked to happy life'

I would like to see a comparison based on astrology and Elvis myths.

So you are OK with something like a backpacker hostel not allowing black people to stay. This happened recently in Australia in Alice Springs. As far as I know they were completely privately run.

Michael

There is a difference here. They didn't refuse to use the ad because they were atheists but because of the message. If they wanted to advertise something else, they wouldn't have a problem.

49. Religion 'linked to happy life'

Gordy,
I expect fundamentalists and members of the most ridiculous sects to claim the largest amounts of happiness.

50. Atheists claim censorship by billboard company

It's a private company and if they don't want your money, deal with it and go elsewhere.
