Diacanu,

After I posted my comment, it was quickly pointed out that scooter was joking and that I am on a high horse. Please read the following comments and then make up your own mind.

269, 306, 320, 323, 327, 330

Take care.

Scooter, there is a fundamental human component missing in you. I'm sure I'm not the first person to say this to you.

To everyone else who has nobly battered there head against the wall in this thread: you are trying to explain the concept of empathy, something that you have intrinsically, to someone who does not have it. You can not explain empathy, it is inate. Use your intellects and energies elsewhere. I am glad to have had this grand discussion on ethics, I have learned a lot from it, but at some point enough is enough. On most topics I can agree to disagree, but when Scooter exposes himself by saying that people with brain injuries and the mentally ill should be put down I do NOT agree to disagree. I will not politely continue dialog with this sociopathic douchebag and neither should any of you.

Veronique got it right.

Scooter, fuck you dickhead.

Scooter,

You answered my questions concerning the mentally ill and people with brain injuries with more questions. Please have the courage to answer exactly what you think we should do with people who have suffered a brain injury who are not able to fend for themselves financially.

Scooter,

Please take the time to answer this. I am finding a lot of your arguments are disturbing to me. However I also think that some of them are pretty compelling. The three simple questions that you asked:

How bad do you want it?
What are you willing to do to get it?
What are you willing to give up to discipline yourself to make the life you want to live?

are very penetrating. I am not as educated as many people on this forum are, however I am living the question that I have for you.

My wife works at a facility that helps the mentally ill as well as brain injury victims. I think that this type of work is very important. I feel that as a society we are indeed responsible to take care of these people.

On the other hand. I have two stepsons. Both of them are young and strong and have made and are making decisions that have led them to poverty. I know that these young mens entire circle of friends is the same way. They do drugs, act tough, steal, abuse the system, and beg their parents for money. My wife and I no longer support this type of behavior. My stepsons have to walk their own path financially.

In my perfect world the brain injured people would be able to get their healthcare and needs met. The young men who are obviously able to work but are making choices not to would have to tough it out without any government support. This isn't unkind, it is really the only kind thing to do for them.

What kind of capitalist model would you propose that starts to help those who really are screwed but would not help those who are blatantly abusing the system so they can be lazy?

OK Scooter, I've heard what you don't like and I agree that the abuses of tax dollares that you've pointed out are annoying. There are abuses in the social welfare system, but that is not the case in general. I work with a shelter for battered woman, my wife works at a institute that provides housing and help for people who have had brain injuries. One of my friends works for a shelter for battered gay men.

I think that as a society we have a responsibility to help people in these situations. I think that it is important that we collectively pay to help these people get back on their feet emotionally, intellectually and financially if possible. In the case of the brain injury patients, there is NO way to revive their broken intellects (at least not right now). I think that as a society we should take care of these brain injured folks. What do you think?

"If you can't afford it, you can't have it."

The voice of a privileged person who has little insight into the pains of other people. Just what we need, another Rush Limbaugh. I think I'm going to puke.

9. Debate between Christopher Hitchens and Dinesh D'Souza

Don't you think that most of D'Souza's arguments could have been completely ruined if the the 'Jesus wins by default' pov was hammered on. That just seems like such a great point to make over and over.

Are there any debaters out there who can think of a better way to address the issues (nonissues) brought up by D'Souza?

The argument that 'Christianity wins by default' since science doesn't explain everything needs to be exposed and dismantled whenever it is displayed.

This was an excellent speech that is full of well researched information. Thanks Eddie! While many atheists were still not expressing themselves Eddie was out there fighting the fight.

ChrisMcL, I can not believe that you would consider the statements and concerns presented in this video as flacid. Unbelievable.
