Bet there'll be some weasling out of it on the grounds of religious freedom.

Bugger - didn't notice this until the 26th.

Still - big kudos to everyone who took part, from those of us who wish we did.

" But my faith doesn't depend on that outcome."

And my lack-of-faith doesn't depend on them not being able to shoe-horn their data into the outcome that they want.

5. On Fitna, the Movie

Comment #178804 by ghost of numf-el on May 12, 2008 at 4:59 am

From reading the reviews / comments (I confess that I have seen neither film, so feel free to berate me for that point) it appears to me that 'Fitna' is merely the fascist anti-Islam equivalent of the fascist anti-atheist 'Expelled'.
And it should likely be treated with as much contempt.

Anyway - not half as much fun as Fitba'. 8>)

What a load of arse!

I had to stop reading about a third of the way through.

rod the farmer - "Why would they not have these forms at their church, so everyone could sign it when in clear possession of their faculties ?"

Rod - I'm pretty sure that my mother, who has been a JW since 1972, carries the equivalent of a 'non-donor' card in her purse, the size of a credit card, which basically states that she refuses blood and organs on religious grounds.

It's her choice, and I'd like to think that I wouldn't countermand it. Fucking stupid choice though it be.
And she'd better not countermand my choice to have whatever the doctors feel is necessary.

Following someone to the operating theatre to get them to sign away their life for Jesus takes a special kind of cunt though IMHO.

Raiko - "... but why are we suddenly talking about Germany, anyway? I'm just curious how that came up. "

Oh my Dog! Someone talking about something that isn't American! How did that happen?

It was surely a more pertinent point being made about education that which side had the prettier uniforms in the American civil War, wouldn't you say?

10. New Atheists Are Not Great

Comment #145766 by ghost of numf-el on March 18, 2008 at 5:55 am

D'Oh! and Snow are just a couple of wank stains. And not very good wanks either - the kind you have when you know fine that you've got to go out and do some gardening when you're finished.

It's just a pity that there are so many people in this world stupid enough to not see through their retoric and bullshit for what it is.

11. What is the role of free will to an atheist?

Comment #125220 by ghost of numf-el on February 11, 2008 at 4:48 am

Atheism itself says nothing about free will. Merely about the lack of an intelligent creator.

Therefore every atheist will have their own answer to the question, and I will not second guess them. All I can do is to give my own answer.

My belief is that there is no God, nor Gods. There is no supreme being. Therefore there is no-one or nothing to pre-determine my day to day existence (with the possible exception of my wife :) ).
i.e. we have free will, because there is no viable option.
Therefore we each have to accept responsibility for our actions and our inactions.

If, however, I am way off the mark, and there is a God, and freewill is only an illusion, then everything I have done wrong is Gods fault. I have followed his plan for me, and I expect to be rewarded for it.

No, not the pits!
But you told me to ........

12. Charles Simonyi Professorship in the Public Understanding of Science

I do feel awkward about calling Prof. Dawkins "Richard", though...

I concur with this - it gets me thinking of the scene from Waynes World when Wayne and Garth meet the legendary Alice Cooper.
"We're not worthy! We're not worthy!"

;)

Seriously though, thanks Richard for enlightening us with your insights. I wish you a happy retirement. Selfishly, I'm glad to see from your comments that you won't be taking it sitting down.

I would also like to wish your successor the best of luck in their new role, and hope that they can progress science, and our understanding of it to the same extent that you have. They are, indeed, big shoes that they will have to fit.

As Paula Kirby mentioned, the manifesto is pretty much spot on , very well thought out - and I'm glad to see that it's open to its own evolution.

13. Ad 'likely to offend gay people'

Comment #123389 by ghost of numf-el on February 7, 2008 at 4:47 am

Perhaps our friend from the middle ages was thinking of the fall of Sodom and Gammorah.

God sends and angel to get Lot and his family out of there, the people want to shag the angel (no doubt the most beautiful thing they have ever seen). Lot offers up his daughters instead, but God saves the day (this time) and gets them out of there.
God then destroys the towns, and Lots wife gets turned to sand.
Later on Lots daughters both, in turn, get Lot drunk and shag him, without any punishment.

So, it's not okay to want to have sex with a heavenly body, but it's all right to fuck your kids.

Go figure!

I believe it's been said before - Fucktards!

14. Blasphemy

Comment #122783 by ghost of numf-el on February 6, 2008 at 4:35 am

Styrer - I've thoroughly enjoyed your comments up until now , but they're starting to appear a bit childish. Which is unfortunate, because you were making a lot of sense.

IMO, Mr Dennet has been trying to bring attention to this matter in a way that he thinks may possibly help. You disagree with the way that he is going about this. It is your right to let us know that you disagree with how he is putting across his point.

I feel that you would be better served getting in touch with your MP / Senator / local newspaper /whatever and letting THEM know how you feel, rather than bad mouthing the people in this forum who are all after the same outcome as you i.e. start by saving this one man, and then, hopefully sooner rather than later, wipe religious dogma off the face of the earth. Each journey starts with one step. (Unless you're driving... or taking the bus.... :) )

So you've made your point - now try doing something CONSTRUCTIVE about the situation.

As an aside - feel free to tell me to 'fuck off' if you get your jollies out of that - but then get off your fucking arse and do something to help.

15. What does atheism say about the purpose (or the meaning) of life?

Comment #119993 by ghost of numf-el on February 1, 2008 at 4:26 am

Or, of course there's always the Monty Python version, taken from the aptly named Meaning Of Life :-

Gaston: You see that house? That is where I was born. My mother said to me, "Garcon. The world is a beautiful place, and you must spread joy and contentment everywhere you go". And so I became a waiter... Well, I know it is not a great philosophy but...
[pauses, looks offended]
Gaston: Well, fuck you. I can live my life in my own way if I want to.
[begins to walk away in disgust]
Gaston: Fuck off. Don't come following me.

19. Ken Ham in Leicester April 2008

Comment #114874 by ghost of numf-el on January 23, 2008 at 5:04 am

I went looking for info on how many people turned up in Aberdeen. No idea.
I live up in Aberdeen, and didn't even know he'd been in town. The local papers website has nothing in it, and AiG doesn't mention numbers either.
It does mention some nonsense about a local hostelry called The Monkey House. Ken's got a problem that they use a logo based on the famous picture showing the evolutioinary steps from chimpesque primate up through neanderthal man etc. to homo sapiens. The last two people in their new logo are facing each other with a pint in their hands, obviously relaxed and chatting. And they have the phrase 'Social Evolution' under the logo.
And Ken's upset about that. Twat that he is.
He does come across as being bloody miserable as he writes his blog.
Good.

Not that I wish the man any harm, even though he is a twat - if I did then I'd suggest that the easy way to take care of him would be to put up posters advertising his meetings in the local mosques.

20. What are your qualifications to question religion anyway? Just who are you?

Comment #110708 by ghost of numf-el on January 12, 2008 at 4:41 am

What are my qualifications to question religion anyway? Just who am I?

Why?
Who the fuck do I have to be, and what fucking qualifications do I need to have to ask what I deem to be a perfectly reasonable fucking question?
Or are you trying to fucking weasle out of it, you fucking evil power crazy charlatan?

(Perhaps dial down the sweariness and vitriol if you have any respect for the person you're talking to.)

AnreG - the Bible may state the Golden Rule - but it is not the only belief system to do so. So you can't use the specialness of that to prove that the Christian God is where we should get our moral values from.

Surely it wouldn't be a lie detector as such, but would only indicate whether or not the person believed that they were lying.

Comment #83162 by ghost of numf-el on October 29, 2007 at 5:51 am

Kudos to the Doc for having the cojones to stand up in front of the world and say that he was wrong.

"Comment #82529 by Mr DArcy on October 26, 2007 at 2:54 pm

What is quite apparent is that religions of all kinds are quite happy to cite "evidence" when it coincides with their viewpoint and to totally ignore it when it doesn't.

The Christian creationists are particularly prone to this modus operandus."

After all, that's what they do with their own religious tracts, so it's obviously acceptable to do it with other peoples too.

****ers!
