1. Bill Maher's Religulous Opens Today

Comment #259346 by dbunker on October 3, 2008 at 9:27 am

Just checked the listings in the paper. Doesn't seem to be showing in my neck of the great northeast.(USA)

2. Dawkin 'bout a revolution

Comment #225540 by dbunker on August 7, 2008 at 1:28 am

How about an ad promoting the FSM as the one true version of the one true religion.

3. Animal Science Without Evolution

Comment #185108 by dbunker on May 27, 2008 at 1:38 am

Yes, we have our fair share of fundys here in Maine. I suppose it's that "live and let live" attitude that also allows us nonbelievers to be who we are without too much worry.

4. A Pragmatist and a Lobbyist on Atheism

Comment #134549 by dbunker on February 28, 2008 at 1:21 am

It didn't surprise me that the legislator didn't know he cosponsored the bill. We need more people like Lange in every state to remind our elected reps that someone is paying attention to the issues.

5. Stop revisionist Christian nation House Resolution 888

Comment #114136 by dbunker on January 21, 2008 at 12:31 pm

Sent my congressman an e-mail last week on behalf of the humanist group in my part of the USA and the response was not encouraging. I honestly don't think he knew what the big deal was. After all he said he supports the right of people to worship in any religion they choose.
Really is scary when our elected reps are so ignorant of the principles on which our country was founded.

6. Three wise men just legend: archbishop

Comment #101365 by dbunker on December 20, 2007 at 9:22 am

If this is what he's saying in public, what must he be thinking in private.

7. Mitt the Mormon

Comment #91685 by dbunker on November 29, 2007 at 1:22 am

I've heard of the creationist "wedge" strategy. Could the underwear thing be part of a Mormon "wedgie" strategy?

8. Mitt the Mormon

Comment #91153 by dbunker on November 27, 2007 at 12:23 pm

If I were Mitt Romney, I'd be reluctant to say too much in public about my beliefs too. Mormon undies? You learn something new every day!

9. When Congress Interferes With Science, Who You Gonna Call? (Hint: It's not Ghostbusters)

Comment #86050 by dbunker on November 8, 2007 at 1:25 am

Having spent some time lobbying members of congress on Capitol Hill, I can tell you it's not easy work. Thanks to Lori Lipman Brown and the Secular Coalition for America for making sure the voice of millions of atheists is heard in DC.

10. Response to Theodore Dalrymple

Comment #85212 by dbunker on November 5, 2007 at 9:48 am

I'm grateful that America's founders thought that comfortable delusions, though they may have made a difficult life more easily tolerated, were not as valuable as reason, logic and the search for truth as the basis for running a new country.
They had some confidence in the peoples' ability to accept that responsibility. Mr. Dalrymple seems to suggest that the "unwashed masses" are not up to a similar task in their personal lives.
That is a shame.

11. Atheists aren't a bad lot

Comment #80491 by dbunker on October 22, 2007 at 1:42 am

Doubters and non-believers need to be more open about the conclusions we have reached on religion. It's the least we can do to further the cause of rational thought in the community of people who assume "everyone believes in some god".

12. Sam Harris seems like a nice fellow, but very confused

Comment #77301 by dbunker on October 9, 2007 at 1:46 am

Hard to believe that Harris would recommend going "under the radar" when his message has been delivered more often in a B-52 than a Stealth Bomber. But there are times when being discreet is more usefull to the cause of reason than a a label that may end the conversation. I'm confident that most people know when and how to use the "A" word effectively.

13. Why Christians should take Richard Dawkins seriously

Comment #72164 by dbunker on September 20, 2007 at 1:06 pm

Having accused Dawkins of inventing a "straw" god, the author can't begin to fashion one even that substantial.

14. Honest Mistakes or Willful Mendacity

Comment #68185 by dbunker on September 6, 2007 at 9:59 am

I don't know why we continue to expect a different kind of response from the intelligent and educated than from the willfully ignorant. When people are forced to examine strongly held beliefs, the reaction is often anger. The difference between them seems to be in the tools they use to fight back. I'm more comfortable with the raised voices and profanity I sometimes recieve than the apparently cold blooded misrepresentation of TGD that Cornwell seems capable of.

15. The importance of doubt

Comment #67018 by dbunker on September 1, 2007 at 10:51 am

So many apologists for their religions. So few seem able (or is it willing?) to respond to the very real problems inherent in relying on faith as a source of knowledge. Is it possible that some day even the believers will grow tired of misrepresenting the views of athiests and agnostics in an attempt to make themselves feel better?
