3. Cheney and Obama: It's Not Genetic

Comment #80623 by LoneStarTravis on October 22, 2007 at 11:02 am

Obama seems to be a religious person, but he did say that he preferred an evidence-based view of the world than a faith-based view of the world.

keith,

Catholic atheist = Someone who is culturally Catholic but doesn't believe in any of it.

And yes, I was kidding... sort of. I was over exaggerating, but not that much. I lived in Austin for a while, and more often than not people were atheists. Plus, that city is just freaking awesome. If you are to tour Texas, go nowhere but Austin. Everyone loves Austin, with the exception of people who are extremely conservative.

People like to pick on Texas. Sam Harris did in Letter to a Christian Nation, and Egan did here. But something they both missed is that in the Texas Constitution (for a good laugh, I recommend you someday read it) it says something like "There is no religious test when running for office, provided you admit the existence of a Supreme Being." What a joke. But, honestly, Texas isn't as religious as one might assume.

San Antonio and the surrounding area have many, many Catholic atheists. Houston, my hometown, is pretty religious (see: Joel Osteen) but it's not uncommon to run into a fellow atheist in a day's happenings. Dallas/Fort Worth/Arlington area has a lot of megachurches, but also more than a few atheist groups. And then there's the shining jewel of Texas: Austin! Does any city on the planet have more atheists than Austin? I doubt it.

Science proves God's existence? But if there's proof then why is faith held in such veneration? If there is evidence for God's existence, then you can't have the faith he wants you to have. Uh oh. It seems poor Lauren Green has condemned herself to hell.

Very cool. Wish I could have been there.

(And I hope videos of it will someday be available.)

10. A Face-Off Over Faith

Very frustrating to listen to. I don't know why Dawkins would go to a "debate" such as this; I honestly can't imagine a worse format in which to carry out the debate.

- Moderator will read a quote from person A.
- Person A will elaborate on quote.
- Person B will say why quote is wrong/misrepresent quote.
- Person A will not say a word in response.

And so on and so forth until the moderator finally let Dawkins defend his statements.

The worst part of it all was Lennox describing atheism as an ideology. I think Sam Harris was right - we need to dump the tag "atheist"; it just leads to the type of stereotyping Lennox was doing. Or, as Harris put it, "It's as though, before the debate even begins, our opponents draw the chalk-outline of a dead man on the sidewalk, and we just walk up and lie down in it."

When I started reading this comic, I thought it must be a work of satire. As I read on, I was met with the sad reality that it was actually sincere.

Slightly off-topic, but...

The stories in the Bible are absolutely terrible. If one were to examine these stories as pure fiction while looking for timeless qualities which make these stories truly great, one will be greatly disappointed.

The way of the Jedi is my religion, and The Force is my god.

"From my point of view, what they're doing is essentially teaching their students very well to function in the eighth century."

Indeed, they are.

As someone who is about to be a teacher, things like this greatly worry me.

13. Why Christians should take Richard Dawkins seriously

Mr. Skinner has answered Dawkins' recent question: Yes, you must apparently be fully educated in leprechology before disbelieving in leprechauns.
