Bob Ross... What happened to the "happy little trees"?

He has a biology degree from Brown?! They should revoke it if he fails to veto this bill.

5. Non-religious summer camps develop niche

Comment #182524 by jdb on May 20, 2008 at 10:44 am

DjSauthPaw,

I wasn't suggesting that anybody should indoctrinate children with atheism! Far from it. I was just pointing out how the good reverend offered "not completely neutral" as a criticism.

Anyone can guess that CampQuest will probably have some localized charge fluctuations, but remain neutral on average. I'm sure, however, that this pales in comparison with the utterly ionic character of the theistic camps, which most certainly fail the "neutrality" condition that the good reverend has put forth.

"Critics say the camps appear to espouse a particular point of view.":
"There's obviously some teaching going on, there's some philosophy there. It's not completely neutral."

I must have missed that commandment:
"Thou shalt keep all summer camps neutral."

I'm pretty sure the hundreds (thousands?) of theistic summer camps have highly questionable "neutrality."

7. Orangutan attempts to hunt fish with spear

Comment #171007 by jdb on April 28, 2008 at 8:25 am

I love pictures like this. It reminds us how close we are.
My wife and I were watching Nature the other night on PBS and they showed a mother gorilla nursing her baby. We were amazed at how much that image reminded us of just a couple of years ago when our daughter was nursing: the way that the mother holds her child, the way the child looks up with her eyes wide open staring at mommy, the way baby folds her arms and fiddles with her fingers.
I can't understand how some people, even if they don't understand the science, can refuse the fact that there is an obvious connection.

8. Investigating Atheism

Comment #167001 by jdb on April 23, 2008 at 2:33 pm

Okay, I didn't get very far before I noticed something screwy. They say on the Contemporary Atheists page:
http://www.investigatingatheism.info/whoswhocontemporary.html
that RD is a "molecular biologist". I think this is a bit of a misnomer. Well... other than the fact that he is a biologist, and indeed he is made of molecules.

9. Happy Birthday, Richard Dawkins!

Happy Birthday!
It seems that several good things happen on March 26th... My wife and I started dating 12 years ago today!

10. Richard Dawkins on five of his favorite books

Comment #132192 by jdb on February 24, 2008 at 12:38 pm

I've heard Richard say several times that he'd like to write fiction, or has at least mentioned some good ideas. The question is... WHEN?!

I "found" Carl Sagan by reading Contact, his only work of fiction, at the age of 14. Of course this led me to the rest of his work, which I love.

How much larger of an audience would Richard draw with a work of fiction?

11. A Letter From Hell

I submitted this as an article previously, but it was never posted.
Some teacher in Bismark, ND USA showed this video to his class

12. Banned From Church

Comment #115054 by jdb on January 23, 2008 at 1:22 pm

"he would not write her a transfer letter enabling her to join another church, a requirement in many Baptist congregations"

Could you imagine if we did that?

"Prof. Dawkins would not write her a transfer letter enabling her to read postings on Sam Harris's website, a requirement for many Atheist websites."

13. Banned From Church

Comment #115049 by jdb on January 23, 2008 at 1:18 pm

"We're not the FBI; we're not sniffing around people's homes trying to find out some secret sin," ... "Ninety-nine percent of these cases never go that far."

So 1% of the time you do have to go sniffing around? I think this is an admission of breaking and entering.

14. Gigantic fossil rodent discovered

"Gigantic fossil rodent discovered by BBC"

Wow, the BBC has really become diversified. Or else they really need to get a new office building.

17. This Is Not a Test

Comment #99815 by jdb on December 17, 2007 at 3:44 pm

'His slogan is "Faith, Family, Freedom," which Huckabee ... wrote himself.'

'Can it really be true that ... Huckabee wrote that whole slogan all by himself? While you ponder this massively impressive claim...'

Genius, pure genius.
Thank you Hitch, I needed to laugh today.

18. THE FOUR HORSEMEN - Available Now on DVD!

Comment #99164 by jdb on December 15, 2007 at 7:27 pm

I know there are serious discussions going on now but...

I think it is great that Dawkins, Hitchens and Harris invited Santa Claus to their discussion. It will really help us spread our message to the children.

But seriously... this is great. Although, I'm not sure about calling it the four horsemen. I don't think it will bode well with the crazies.

19. A Call For a Presidential Debate on Science and Technology

Comment #96547 by jdb on December 10, 2007 at 5:37 pm

Signed. I hope it happens... but how can we expect politicians, at least some of whom think that the truth of evolution is determined by vote, to get up and debate the importance of science?

20. Papal encyclical attacks atheism, lauds hope

Comment #92428 by jdb on November 30, 2007 at 1:25 pm

"Let us put it very simply: man needs God, otherwise he remains without hope."

da Pope's phallacy:
Needing god has absolutely no bearing on whether or not he actually exists.
Neither does the supposed immorality of atheists or atheism.
Neither does the failure of Marxism.

21. 'Muhammad' teddy teacher arrested

Comment #90867 by jdb on November 26, 2007 at 2:26 pm

"It is seen as an insult to Islam to attempt to make an image of the Prophet Muhammad."

This is because they don't want the rest of the world to find out the truth: Mohammad was actually a cute fuzzy little teddy bear.
If the truth got out it might become difficult to get people to fill their pockets with roofing nails and blow themselves up on a crowded bus.

22. Keeping the faith at school

Comment #73289 by jdb on September 24, 2007 at 4:32 pm

""But there was that flood in Peterborough!" notes a boy.

Without missing a beat, Rozema responds, "That's true, but God promised not to flood the whole Earth again.""

So God DID flood Peterborough! I new that town had the highest concentration of sinners.

23. Talking Action Figure Jesus

Comment #73281 by jdb on September 24, 2007 at 4:25 pm

How about atheist action figures? In fact, we could just sell empty boxes. We'd make a killing!
