joeyoap -

Yeah, I always saw the virgin birth story as the greatest excuse, ever!

kraut-

You're missing the point. It *is* about freedom of conscience, not acting illegally. No one is arguing in favour of your scenario.

Far from me to argue that equality before the law isn't a fundamental human right. But so is freedom of conscience, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of assembly and many others.

Those rights are not hierarchical.

Fouad Boussetta-

The reason it didn't work out is because it would be unconstitutional for Quebec to do so, as it would go against the canadian charter. The only way for that idea to work is to modify the canadian constitution.

And while I agree with the sentiment of your post, I'm not sure that having gender equality superseding freedom of conscience is such a good idea.

5. Boy dies of leukemia after refusing treatment for religious reasons

Quite a sad story, and a good illustration of the dangers of brainwashing children with religious beliefs. I know that Dawkins is very careful to say that it's only the labelling of children that he considers child abuse, but I think this case shows that raising them to believe nonsense can also clearly be abuse by itself.

That poor kid would still be alive if his aunt, that sad excuse for a human being, didn't convince him that he was following God's will by, basically, committing suicide.

Re: Eric Blair #77617

Would you please stop the Quebec bashing? It always annoys me to no end when my fellow canadians indulge in it, either due to prejudice or ignorance... we should know better.
