1. Archbishop's 8 March centennial message: Let Sharia Law govern women's lives, Amen!

Comment #128634 by Shadow Boxer on February 17, 2008 at 1:33 pm

he is cunningly trying to strengthen the grip of religion and religious institutions on the society as a whole

When I first read the Archbishop's statements about Sharia law, this is what I thought too. A sneaky way to allow religion to regain a toe-hold in matters of the law.

After reading the adjacent article on exorcism, I can't help but wonder if they're afraid of losing some business. If doctors start curing these "possession" diseases, there won't be anyone left for them to exorcise.
They've long ago lost the simple diseases, what will they do when they start losing the really tough ones?

I read about this on Pharyngula the other day.
Now that the vote's been taken, I must say, I'm impressed that 9 people actually had the guts to vote "nay". A lot more than I would have expected, given what I've been reading about the climate over there.

4. Jesus Camp: A scary movie that should frighten us all

For the scariest moment, I'm torn between the pastor woman, when they're blessing the seats in the chapel, praying that everyone be covered in the blood of Jesus, and the little girl saying that martyrdom sounds cool.
Couldn't help but laugh at Ted Haggard preaching against homosexuality though... :)

Is there a new release of it in the UK?

I don't know about the UK, but it's about to be released on DVD in Australia (7th Nov).

I didn't look too deeply into it. I'm at work at the moment, so I've got work stuff to do... :-)

I was also thinking, you probably should have addressed your letter to Downer - AusAid falls under the purview of the foreign minister, not the education minister. Not that that would have helped much - he's an even bigger idiot than she is.

Is your information up-to-date? I did a little research (not much, admittedly) including a visit to the AusAid website http://www.ausaid.gov.au and while I didn't find any reference to what you were referring to, I did find this document http://www.ausaid.gov.au/publications/pdf/aids_strategy.pdf on Australia's AIDS strategy, which explicity promotes condom use as "the only proven and effective means of preventing sexual transmission of HIV." (Section 6.4, pg 16)

Maybe they've updated their policy recently.

But if I'm wrong (which is not unheard of), believe me, I am as outraged as you at this stupidity by our government.

If half of the worlds Catholics are in Latin America, and they are not abstaining or using protection, won't their numbers eventually dwindle?

Interesting... maybe then, AIDS is NOT God's punishment for homosexuality (as so many of the nice preacher types have claimed in the past). Maybe he's just trying to get rid of all the Catholics... :-)
a bunch of grotesque old virgins

Does anybody actually believe these guys are virgins. There's no way anyone can check. After all, power corrupts, and absolute power....

Cardinal: "Come on baby, no-one will know. But if you tell anyone, you're going to hell!"
