1. On TV: The Genius of Charles Darwin: Presented by Richard Dawkins

I'm glad that in some places evolution is at least taught to children. At my local high school in Oklahoma, I was not taught evolution as much as I was taught the arguments for and against it (organized neatly on a table).
And yes, the Second Law of Thermodynamics was used as an argument -against- it.

Richard, if you read this, just know that every time you defend gay people and smash out ignorance and bigotry, you cause a sense of triumph and hope for gay people. Your handing of Betty the pious was heroic and I cannot thank you enough for it.

I don't really get how Dawkins is arrogant or close-minded. I always felt that people said that about him because he was perceived that way in the context of a world which often respects religion. Maybe a specific example of his manner could help me see otherwise.
But initially I thought this was some kind of Expelled the movie advertisement, but it still made me laugh! I think it's true that the conversation spawned by this video is even more funny. This might have already been brought up, but does anyone remember that Jib-Jab video outlining the Bush-Kerry thing? While I don't the issue is even a debate at all, I think the approach made in that particular video is the same made for this video. It pokes fun at the issue by appealing to the general public, while not really even taking a stance on it.
I think it's like when you're having a conversation about a serious issue with someone, and then that quiet annoying guy sitting next to you chimes in with some low level comedy.

I think this video is very pro-ID actually. I know there has been a lot of discussion, but the way the scientist, who claims that "something else" is going on under the microscope, is thrown out with the "Expelled the movie" logo slapped onto his face seems to highlight the whole point of that movie: that people who question Darwinism are often fired from their jobs!
Actually, I've changed my mind already. I have no idea what it's trying to make fun of! I would think that the indifferent, and machine-like nature of the scientific method as depicted in the video is being celebrated by Dawkins and company, but is the allegedly "close-minded" nature of the scientific method something that ID proponents criticize? The rogue scientist who notices "something else" seemed very innocent in his statement and the way he is handled by the "machine" (unfairly, rudely) would seem exactly in-line with the point of Expelled the movie! Maybe the machine depicts something else, I'm not sure.
As for the humor, I laughed! It was crazy and whimsical and I had been down all day, so this cured my Sunday blues!

No, they require approval apparently. The only comments I see are ones praising the movie! They also claim how people like Dawkins are "afraid" of this movie.

It's not surprising that proponents to ID stupidity have trouble following the proposal they impress on everyone else. A skeptic who wants to question the arguments on which ID rests? Expelled!

Woo! I'm excited. The secular organization I'm apart of at my university is hosting a showing of Flock of Dodos tomorrow. Should be very exciting!

I don't think Richard would have wasted 4 whole debates on Boteach anyway. Listen to him talk about evolution! He reminds me of those baptist preachers I listened to every Sunday years ago.

"This is an attack, we're being attacked, I feel attacked, attack attack attack"
Really? It's just a fucking sign. I like how Houser thinks that the persecution of Christians thousands of years ago is equivalent to that of a small sign placed on the lawn of town hall. Everyone is permitted freedom of expression, INCLUDING atheists.
Now excuse me while I go drink some blood and eat squirrels, since that's my atheist duty.

Oh I'm not here to correct anyone about inaccuracies. I made a comment on my blog earlier, citing the Israel-Palestine conflict as an example of pointless atrocities caused by religion and had a friend shit a brick over my ignorance on the subject. He claims that religion has never been the true cause of any war or even the inquisition, witch burnings, crusades, etc, that 9/11 was backlash in response to Western occupation in the middle east. So I'm just looking for further reading on the subject, and driving the point that perhaps simple statements like "9/11 is a symbol for 'Religious bigotry'" can't possibly encompass the true reason behind these horrible events. We have to be careful, and we can't be careless.
Anyway, I'm not here to stir conflict, only to learn what others have to say.
Comment #89808 by Foth on November 21, 2007 at 7:08 pm
I'm not really sure that it was absolutely the crime of faith that drove them to do it. Faith certainly played a part... acted as a catalyst for their hideous actions. Anyone ridiculous enough to believe in literal Religion would also be ridiculous enough to fly planes into the sides of buildings. But I don't know that the will of Allah, kill the infidels, blah blah blah was exactly the reason why it happened. Weren't there economic reasons behind it? Political?
It's easy to name religion as the sole cause of cruelty in the world, but I think that's irresponsible. There's huge debate about the conflict in Palestine and Israel: what role exactly does religion have to play in it? Would the conflict still be there if religion didn't exist? I honestly don't know, and I'm interested what others have to say about it. Socrates once said that economy is the basis of every war and I'm beginning to see that people somehow use religion as a kind of excuse for conflicts in the world. But again, don't get me wrong, I'm just seeing a bit of irresponsibility here in terms of the blame game. We can't ignore everything else, and we can't just assume that those people who fly planes into the sides of buildings did it just for the virgins in fairy-land. I'm SURE there were other, more tangible motives behind that atrocity.
Anyway, any thoughts? I'm really interested in hearing what people have to say about this.
