All i really know about this is from Carl Sagans "Forgotten Ancestors".
He writes that Wallace and Darwin had a lot of respect for each other. I would not have respect for someone who ripped off my work and i'm sure Wallace would not either. They were both Gentleman and pioneers and have my respect.
I know people are joking about Darwinism vs Wallaceism, but it just brings back memorys of that devastating Cat war between Cloister and Clistor. (One for the Red Dwarf anorakes)

Careful people if we start becoming a self defined group it may all go wrong.
Look at the gays! 100 years ago they were small individuals, now there communities that want to 1) Destroy the family 2) Cause Earthquakes in Iran 3) Cause the Easter Bunny to allow American Soldiers to be killed overseas 4) Remove Morals from everyday life and 5) Bring about the apocolypse. AND this is all just in their spare time!!! A bigger target attracts more mud, so why make a movement out of it when we can slowly just enlighten future generations (as it seems to be working)
For the same reason why Sam Harris wants to get rid of the label Atheist, lets not try to define ourselves by our disbeliefs. It's just ridicoulous and I am sure 99% of rational people would take a step back from this.

The earlier and more successful the indoctrination is, the harder it is is to cure the patient of the disease.
I agree a lot with Santi and Styler (though they both argue opposite but similar corners) but i think the key point here is that the use of brainwashing is wide spread, popular and successful. If one or two escape this and are unharmed and benefit from the skills learned great. But what about the one's who don't are we to get the weight measures out and balance this up? My mind goes back to 1984. They learn INGSOC and can not go back. That top me may not be child abuse as you are not harming the child (as such) but it is human abuse as they will forever not reach the potential that they could have.

However back to topic, i'm straight so the rest is assumptions. Coming out as gay and taking a boy to the "Formal" is not a very cool thing to do and as such would not be something a lad would do for laugh? Dune010,
I wrote out a big long email then had It wiped because I took to long, bugger.
Serves me right for doing it, whilst also trying to get other work out the door.
Thanks for your analogy with the stem cells, that helped me to see where your coming from and why we should be free to discuss things no matter if certain people disagree on an absolute level. The principle to able to ask WHY is also essential as it is one of the most important questions around.
Certain things do need to be discussed very carefully however. I'm sure the 'Doctors' in Nazi Germany felt that they were benefitting humanity in there experimentations. Those experimentations started in discussion which was nothing more then logical and rational I'm sure.
The main reason why I called Palmsunday into question with the whole 'if you can't understand why society does not tolerate it, it is out of your league' was that if he cannot see why it is not allowed in society (I intentionally did not use the word 'wrong' this time) after careful thought then I doubt he has the capacity for the cold hard logic. It would seem he understands it on a gut level as do 99% of us and I will leave it to the philosophers/ intellects and scientists out there to ponder on the why we have developed as a species and a civilization to term it 'immoral' and make it illegal.
I agree that we do not necessarily need to be afraid of the slippery slope and that we can draw lines for ourselves and society. Indeed this is what happened in Roe vs Wade, thanks to people asking the difficult questions and weighing up two sides which are both valid.
Carry on with the discussion but I advise you against simply using rational and logical thinking. As Dawkins himself says (paraphrasing), the selfish gene 'element' is a part of us, but we struggle against it. (or something along those line, you all know what I mean). Being logical and rational takes all the fun out of life, sometimes you need to lead with your gut and not your head.
I'm with Afraidtodie on this other point, you all seem to be arguing a point you don't believe in for the sake of the principle of discussion.

Dune,
Oh dear.
theantitheist, first you accuse SweatyPalm Sunday of being unfit for this debate and then you say this:
If you really can't see why Infanticide is morally and legally wrong then it's fair to say it's out of your league, in the same way that i have trouble understanding Atomic logic puts it out of my leaugue.
Morally and legally wrong?
First, I would ask you to define morality. I'm going to assume that you do not accept absolute morality in the same way as the theists do, but if you do then I would like to know what you use as a basis for it.
If morality is not absolute, then it is well worth considering these issues. This is aimed at all of you who have been dismissive of this discussion, such as you, FightingFalcon. Why should we just assume that what we have grown to accept as socialy (or "morally") unacceptable is so? Is this much different from those who just accept the teachings of the Bible of the Qur'an? It is important to question our assumptions. Most of us are happy to live in a world where foetuses are aborted and pigs are killed for food. Tell me, why is killing babies worse? As I have said, I consider the necessary distinction to be a social issue. But to simply dismiss this all as abhorrent or absurd is, to my mind, quite childish.
As for "legally wrong" theantitheist, what does that even mean? The law is based on practicality and often a variety of "moral" judgements. If nobody attempts to justify moral positions, then how can we trust the law as a justification? If you want to argue that infanticide is a practical error then I agree.
theantitheist, you say that this issue is out of SweatyPalmSunday's league. How can you know this unless it is within your league? If you claim to know that it is out of his league but do not think that you are worthy either then I would suggest that you are in no position to judge the situation. If you do think that you are worthy of addressing the issue then please tell me why killing babies is "morally" wrong, while killing certain other animals is not. If you believe all killing to be "morally" wrong then I would still appreciate a justification for this belief.

Pro choice is a propoganda name (same as pro life) and came about for the abortion debate. It was not meant to carry over into Post Birth or you can choose to kill anyboby. Society has laws to stop you harming others and i'm convinced even 1 day old babies are classified as 'others' (though not in the Lost sense).
Read Sagan with a cold beer on a comfy seat and think about it yourself in a rational manner, if you can't come up with an answer that satisfys you, maybe talk to others or maybe just realise this topic is out of your league.

I read Mercy Ministrys responce online
Mercy Ministries Australia has been surprised at recent media articles which reported a range of inaccuracies about our program.
Mercy Ministries Australia was founded in 2000 as a Christian based charity. We offer a 6 month residential program for young women who are battling life-controlling issues such as eating disorders, self harm, abuse, depression and anxiety.
Prior to entering a Mercy Ministries' Home, all young women are made aware of the details of the program. This allows them to make an informed decision before their entry into the program.
As a Christian based charity, we provide a holistic, client-focused approach, addressing physical, emotional and spiritual needs. We also provide access to specialised services including general practitioners, dieticians, psychiatrists and psychologists. Our counselling staff are carefully recruited, hold government accredited tertiary qualifications and continue ongoing professional development.
Our program is voluntary and young women may choose to leave the program at any time. We aim to provide a safe environment where young women can deal with serious and debilitating issues that affect their health and wellbeing.
Mercy Ministries Australia is funded largely through the generosity of private donations, fundraising activities and corporate sponsorships. The program is offered free of charge to all applicants. We work closely with Centrelink and where a young woman is eligible for Centrelink benefits, this amount goes a small way towards providing 24 hour care, 7 days a week.
Mercy Ministries Australia has received overwhelming positive feedback from supporters, graduates, their family members and members of the community.
We remain committed to offering an outstanding service to young women, being open and transparent in all we do and focusing on our mission - to transform lives and restore hope to young women.
Peter Irvine
Director, Mercy Ministries Australia
Dear Sir/ Madam,
Your recent media exposure has brought a lot of attention to your programme and it was due to this that I have read your responce.
The article in the SMH suggests that your staff do not hold any pychology degrees or have expert training (by which I mean a recognised associated status).
Your responce disputes this stating that your staff hold accredited tertiary qualifications. Can you please advise what qualifications and how many staff hold them. Can you also give an approximation in percentage terms of how much of your funds are spent on general practitioners, dieticians, psychiatrists and psychologists.
Regards
Leon Andrews

Gloria Jeans response to my email.
Dear Leon
Thank you for taking the time to contact us. We are deeply concerned with the recent media coverage related to our sponsorship of Mercy Ministries and association with the Hillsong Church and feel it is not reflective of what our business is all about.
Gloria Jean's Coffees is a company built on family and community values with the vision: "To be the most loved and respected coffee company in the World."
Our responsibility is to our Franchise Partners and our guests.
We are not religiously affiliated, or affiliated to any other beliefs or preferences. We are non-discriminatory and accept staff, franchise partners and guests from all walks of life.
We believe as a truly responsible corporate citizen, that we should have a positive impact on the communities from were we source our coffee and the communities we serve. Our values include: "Belief in people, building and changing lives".
Our sponsorship of many international and local charities including Mercy Ministries is based on giving back to the communities who have helped us become the brand we are today, there are no hidden agendas.
We assessed Mercy Ministries along with many other potential charity partners several years ago now and found that their work transforming the lives of young women in crisis was a good fit with our vision, mission and values.
Our corporate donations amount to approximately $150,000 â€" $170,000 per annum plus the donations made by the public through the money boxes in stores.
Since then we have seen many young women's lives transformed for the better. We have regularly visited Mercy Ministries homes to meet with the residents.
All our Franchise Partners in Australia have the opportunity to do this as well as all our Master Franchise Partners from the 29 other countries in which we serve coffee. We have several Mercy Ministries graduates working in and making a positive contribution to Gloria Jean's Coffees both in our stores and support office.
We have been in direct discussion with Mercy Ministries and we will be working with them to understand what elements of their program could have given rise to these very concerning claims. We would encourage any member of the public that is concerned to review their response to these allegations on their website at www.mercyministries.com.au
Many of the issues facing these young women are not easily fixed. While the vast majority of young women succeed in the program, there are those few for which this program is not the answer. Clearly they have the right to give their views.
We believe this however should not outweigh the positive impact Mercy Ministries has had on the lives of many young women. By removing our sponsorship without due diligence, we would be removing our support for the many young women dealing with eating disorders, unplanned pregnancies, abuse and other life controlling issues that are in desperate need for help to turn their lives around.
We have no relationship with the Hillsong Church. Gloria Jean's Coffees is an Australian-owned private company and there are no financial or legal ties between Gloria Jean's Coffees and Hillsong Church. This remains unchanged.
The religious affiliation of our management, staff, Franchise Partners, charity partners has absolutely no relevance to how we operate our company. Our responsibility is to our Franchise Partners, our guests and the quality of our coffee.
Thank you for your concern, we really do take your thoughts & feelings to heart in trying to ensure we serve you in the best way possible and in our journey to become the most loved & respected coffee house worldwide.
Yours faithfully,
Dianne Baise Guest Relations Officer

It's all fine boycotting Gloria Jeans Coffee shops, but they won't notice unless you tell them you are and why.
You can forward your complaints and comments to them at
http://www.gloriajeanscoffees.com.au/pages/content.asp?pid=74
My comments to them are:
"Further to the recent articles in the Sydney Morning Herald regarding the Mercy Ministries and your support of them I have started boycotting your store, please be aware that I am not alone in my boycott. I beleive that your support of a religious organization that promotes phycological healing and help without any proper credentials is highly irresponsible and unacceptable. Your intentions may have been good, however lending your name and support to an organisation that you have not vetted allows you to be implicated and also share in it's responsibilities to the people it preports to help and in reality damages.
You may actually be aware of the situation and if you were then your organisation can be called accountable, if not then i suggest you use this oppurtunity to assess the situation and distance yourself publically from this organisation".
If you wish to contact me when you have removed your support then i shall return to your shops.
Regards,
Leon Andrews"

Is D'Souza really religous or is it a cunning plan to get rich and the same for Tony Snow??
Really they must be aware of their blatent dishonesty and that could not sit right with a true blue beleaver.
I know they know that there being dishonest because they keep being told about it and they still keep it up.
Me thinks there in it for the money and are actually very clever and deviase.
As only very clever people or very stupid people can come across this obsurd, and they are being succeesful and making a lot of money with it so i'm thinking the former.

The original story inspired me to write a huge email to my entire catholic family, where i ranted and i raved about how only fucking morons could keep up with this shit and that they were praying to a loving god that would condemn my little sister to a life in hell for taking the dogs name in vain, becoming successful and rice or curing cancer using stem cells!!
Not heard back from them yet but hopefully it's another dent in their belief.
Just the pure nerve to come out with this shit, no wonder the pope wears those long robes he must have huge balls of steel to conceal.

The money would just be used by the religion for some fancy planes, art, new house of slavery / worship etc. sod it i'll take it and put it to work (probably give half to saving the gorillas, i like Gorillas) and blow the rest on myself. Better then ending up as gold plating to some fucking dome.
And Rod the Farmer, i'll disagree with you on Microsoft. They a better force for good on this planet then the three abrahamic religions combined. Take Africa as the main example:
Muslims - Causing conflict; mutilating children, especially girls genitals (Ask AAH) genicide etc.
Catholics - Aids; over population; poverty
Jews - Fuck all theres less then 2% of the entire pop who are Jewish, why the fuck do we hear so much from them? There such fucking whingers!!
Microsoft/ Bill & Melinda Gates - Giving $50Billion over time to cure disease/malaria/aids ect. end poverty and give comfort to those who are terminal.
Religion 0 - 1 Microsoft
