1. Muslims outraged at police advert featuring cute puppy sitting in policeman's hat

That's just ridiculous.

I think the Muslims are having a joke on the Brits.

First the Three Little Pigs, now puppies... I swear, it's one big joke.

What creationist website would post something like this? Something critical of their position?

On this site Prof. Dawkins will post, unedited, critiques of his writing, regardless if they are ill informed and poorly written, or eloquent and well reasoned. That would be like Mark Mathis posting a rebuttal by P.Z. Meyers on the Expelled website. It would never happen.

This is one of the reasons I love this website.

How can anything exist before time? It's an absurdity to even suggest it. Without time, God would have not been able to initiate any sequential event, such as creation, because there would be no progression from before to after.

You are just spouting silly fairy tales.

cham

I might point out that Andrew has dodged just about every question Sam has put forward.

Hell, he's dodged just about every statement, only addressing those that he can misrepresent.

What Sam is pointing out is that the evidence supporting Christianity is no different than the evidence supporting Allah, Zeus, or The Flying Spaghetti Monster. Sam has been asking Andrew what makes Christianity right, and the others wrong and Andrew can't answer.

10. Pope is warned of a green Antichrist

Comment #23950 by Kergillian on March 3, 2007 at 5:48 pm

I don't know, I always pictured the devil in black leather with some red, y'know, to add a little color.

I don't really think green is the devil's color. Lucifer is more of an Autumn.

Oh! I know! We could give Satan a makeover!

Queer Eye for the Anti-Christ!

Andrew cannot seem to keep on target.

Unable to directly address Sam, he deftly redirects the argument, and still fails to make a strong case. I was getting angry as I read his 2/14 letter. I couldn't believe his gall at suggesting Sam's argument be so wildly misinterpreted. Andrew must be so madly desperate to justify his faith that he's abandoned all reason.

Sam, however, did an excellent job of bringing the argument back on track. I did like Andrew's admiration for how far the Christian faith has come. From it's humble beginnings as a Jewish Messianic Cult to world wide faith it is now. It is an amazing accomplishment, one that should not be forgotten nor belittled. However, as Sam pointed out, the success Christianity as today, says nothing of how truthful or real it is. Reality is not a popularity contest.

Sam is proving to be more than a match for poor Andrew. I'm betting he regrets agreeing to this debate.

I wonder what kind of mental gymnastics Mr. Sullivan will have to employ now?

15. Grief Without God

Comment #19528 by Kergillian on January 27, 2007 at 11:08 pm

This past summer one of my best friends died.

At his service, the Priest kept talking about God and hoe Joe was a Christian who loved Christ and was now at Christ's side. I wanted to stand up an scream! Joe HATED the Christian Church! He was no Christian and he did not believe in Jesus or Santa Clause or the Tooth Fairy.

I held my tongue because I knew this service wasn't for Joe. It was for Joe's family, and they WERE Christians.

Joe's death was one of the things that got me off the Agnostic Fencepost and publicly acknowledge my own atheism.

Heck, if Pat knows it's comming, can't he stop it? He could call the cops. I'm sure God could drop a name or two.

Comment #14792 by Kergillian on December 25, 2006 at 5:14 am

Dear God,

Thank you for your responce to Richard Dawkins' The God Delision, however, I have a question.

Did you even read the book?

I know you said you did, and you can't lie, but after reading this, I suspect that you may not have read it. Maybe you just skimmed it. You are God after all, and you are a very busy diety, so maybe you didn't have time to read the whole thing. It would be understandable.

So I urge you to please read it again. All the way through this time and think about it very carefuly.

Afterwards, I don't think even you will believe in you.

Love,

-Jim

20. The Blasphemy Challenge

Comment #13121 by Kergillian on December 15, 2006 at 4:10 pm

I'm sorry, but this bugs me.

The arguement against religion is an intellectual one, based on reason and evidence. This "contest" turns it into a game.

"Deny the Holy Spirit and win free stuff!"

It is just crass.

You can't blaspheme that wich doesn't exist.

By having a contest like this you perpetuate the notion that atheists are against God, as if God were real and needed to be opposed.

We need to focus on spreading reason, not slandering fictional dieties.

I attended Word of Life bible camp as a child.

It had a "Cowboys and Indians" theme and it made being brainwashed fun!

My councilors were all perverts though. My showers were always with other boys and the councilors would watch us. Modesty was not an option. I wasn't molested, but there was something creepy about it.

23. Science Gives Christians Upper Hand Over Atheists

Comment #11713 by Kergillian on December 6, 2006 at 7:22 pm

David Mathews,

Sorry it took so long to get bact to you.

But to answer your questions. You asked:

How does atheism relate to science?

Are you suggesting that atheism has an exclusive relationship with science?

Do you limit your thoughts about the Universe and God to only those things which science can actually conclude conclusively or do you go beyond those limits?

There is no relationship. One need not be an Atheist to be a scientist any more than one must be a scientist to be an Atheist.
Science provides a constant and rational approach to questions and answers. It is a methodology that has been tried and tested over centuries, and shown to be reliable.
The Atheist is someone who doesn't believe in God.
It is true that many scientists are Atheists, but this is because when you apply science to the question of God, you find an astounding lack of evidence to support the belief in a divine creator.
In science, one does not start with a belief and then search for support. Not in good science at any rate. One starts with evidence and then seeks to understand the evidence and then one formulates a theory based on that evidence.
Religion does it backwards. Religion states "There is a Divine Creator" and then searches for evidence to support that claim, and discounts all evidence to the contrary.
In my own personal view, to answer your question, no I do not limit my imagination to what science can prove. Only my belief.
Now, let me ask you a question. Why Christianity? What made you choose the Christian Trinity as your God of choice? Why not Islam or Unitarian Universalism or Scientology or any of the thousands of other religions?

24. Science Gives Christians Upper Hand Over Atheists

Comment #11025 by Kergillian on December 2, 2006 at 6:45 pm

David,

I didn't ask any questions, I just made a comment.

Atheism says nothing about the universe except "It is the universe". That is not the role of atheism.

That is the role of science.

All atheism says is: There is no substantial evidence for the existance of God, nor is there a compelling, rational argument for the existance of God.

26. Beyond belief: In place of God

Comment #11021 by Kergillian on December 2, 2006 at 6:21 pm

I'm uncomfortable with the idea that science should replace religion. Science and religion fill very different roles and science should just continue doing what it does. If, in the process, it invalidates religion, so be it.

It is a mistake to think that religion, like science, is a quest for the truth. The quest for knowing our place in the universe isn't the "why" of religion, it's the "how". The original purpose of religion was to establish a community. We are social animals and we, at one time, lived in small family groups. We did this for the same reasons other social animals do it, safety, security, and survival of the species. In small numbers the family unit is sufficient to create an orderly society. Family ties provide strong bonds between individuals and these bonds are beneficial to survival.

As the number of family groups grew, it became necessary for a larger social order to be established. It's no accident that most religions see their God or Goddess as a parent figure. Religion provided a structure that multiple family groups could adhere to. By establishing a consistent set of rules and beliefs multiple clans could meet and cooperate rather than compete.

As societies evolved, the concept of nationality and rulers began to take the place of religion as the establisher and enforcer of order. Where a church could create a community out of several family groups, a ruler could create a nation out of several communities. Religions that failed to adapt to this change died out. Those that found new roles prospered. Religion ceased to be the Father and instead moved to the role of Teacher and Guide, but it remained primarily a social institution.

Now science has reached the point where it is more efficient as teacher than religion. Once again religion must redefine it's place in society or it will disappear. Science is not a social institution, though sometimes it may look that way. Science is the methodical search for understanding. If science is to "replace" religion it may be required to fill a role other than what it is best suited for. I think it is far better to let religion find it's new place or die out altogether and let science be science.

27. Science Gives Christians Upper Hand Over Atheists

Comment #11017 by Kergillian on December 2, 2006 at 5:17 pm

If they come up with real, actual evidence, I'd like to see it. Proof of God would be amazing.

Sadly, I think this is more of the old "The Universe it too complicated, it must have been designed!" argument. And that sad argument has been well refuted over and over.

Still, it's important to examine films like this with an open mind and a critical eye, as ignoring it or ridicule will only bolster the opinion that the intellectual is anti-God rather than pro-science. Bad science can still look like science and even the best scientist can sometimes be fooled. That is why peer review is so important. Failure on our part to give a work like this a fair, critical, examination will result in the Christian Support Network providing the peer review. That would be like leaving Bon Lazar to examine the validity of Area 51 UFO evidence.

It gets frustrating to hear the same faulty evidence presented as fact over and over again, but it's important that, as skeptics, we always address it in a fair manner. Creationists repeat it over and over in the hopes that if they say it enough it will be true. We must be just as diligent and consistent in subjecting their claims to dispassionate scientific review.

28. I'm an atheist, BUT . . .

Comment #7668 by Kergillian on November 19, 2006 at 2:27 am

I'm an Atheist, but... I used to be a Christian. Thankfully, not any more.

I'm an Atheist, but... I used to be uncomfortable admitting it. Listening to your lectures and watching your specials has helped me come to terms with a world where God isn't real.

I'm an Atheist, but... I know a lot of people still believe in "God". Keep spreading the truth of reason and rationality, and keep encouraging Atheists to speak up! There are more of us than anyone knows!
