Thank you for posting this. A big surprise for me, because I used to profoundly dislike the guy when he was a politician. And yet while I might quibble with one or two points, is seems that beneath it all, he is, as a poster above put it, a decent bloke. And an intelligent one.
2. James Cameron finds grave of Jesus & Son

For me, the perfect antedote to this sort of thing is an improvisation by Chris Morris and the legendary Peter Cook in which they discuss Sir Arthur Streeb Greebling's (Cook) discovery of the fossilised infant Jesus! In fact, not just one but several fossils because Jesus had to make some trial runs for the resurrection to ensure he got it right! This is what popped into my mind when I read this article and I'm still smiling.
It was broadcast on Radio 3 (the excellent classical music station) in 1993.

I don't understand his problem with Dawkins's comments about the Jewish lobby in America. It's not a dig at the lobby's religiosity. He is pointing out that it is a very effective lobby despite being statistically a relatively small group of Americans. His point is surely that atheists, who are probably far more numerous than Jews in America, could potentially have even greater impact as a group.
People are so terrified of being perceived as anti-semites that they seem to be terrified of the motives of anyone who brings up a Jewish example! What is "cringe worthy" about Dawkins's comparison? Jewish Americans are a great lobby group. Atheists could aspire to be equally effective. Is anyone seriously offended by this thought?
4. Intelligent Design teaching materials sent to UK schools

The crucial issue, surely, is that there is no one in the world studying "Intelligent Design." There are no journals dedicated to the subject and in ten years, only one paper (which was a review paper, not an original contribution) has seen light of day. If the intelligent designers had produced a corpus of peer reviewed work, then it could be a different argument. Until they do, I can't see what a science teacher is supposed to teach!
