i would have thought they'd be more upset if someone said that the Qur'an DIDN'T allow the oppression of women.

I now have a new comeback for people who push the, "if not from god, then where do you get morals?" argument. Catholic schools stop beating their kids when it becomes illegal, and it clearly doesn't take a religious person to figure out it's immoral.
That said, if i had kids and a teacher beat them, I'd be tempted to hurt them, but instead, I'd just have them sent to jail where they'd get done to them what priests did to children from decades. (and if they were acquitted, then i'd hurt them).

More power to them. Honestly, who really cares? If they want to have a deluded subculture, it's not for the secular among us to stop them, but instead to try to make our viewpoint accessible to those on the fringe and to not allow them to force their views on others.

what kind of secularist group wouldn't want children learning about religion? How are you supposed to resist and argue against something you don't understand?
Religion should be kept out of the science classroom and also not preached about in school. But to not learn about it at all? That's just plain dumb.

RSP, I agree that we have the right to offend, but what you're missing is that public schools are not the public square. Hate speech, though completely unnecessary and counterproductive, should be legal, of course; but it must kept out of high school classrooms.

I've got to change my opinion on this one. I know a lot of you out there are Brits and you're going to think I'm an overly sensitive American, but here's the thing. This kid should have freedom of speech, even to bigoted dogmatic speech, but that has limits in public school. Public schools are meant to be inclusive and MUST take every step necessary for students to feel comfortable, and hate speech like this kid is exhibiting through his t-shirt threatens the environment of the school. There's a reason the school made him remove it at first...it was offensive. And it certainly is, the school has every right to forbid the wearing of that shirt or anything that attacks a group of people.

I guess by principle, I should say he can wear it. That said, he deserves a swift kick the in the crotch. But more importantly an education.

didn't the guy in the video seem to encourage "putting churches on fire"
You, know, that's interesting, i'm assuming he's using a metaphor here, which means he knows what a metaphor is, yet he can't figure out that the book he bases his whole life on is just a collection of symbolic metaphors...and where does this lead you? to the sides of a highway, amazing

Let me preface this by saying that I am of the same mind as you all and would love a world free of religion.
That said, the works of Prof. Dawkins, Sam Harris, Hitchens, Dennett and the rest have done an incredible job of effectively bringing many atheists our of the proverbial closet (myself included) and providing a basis on which to build around, but at this point, "giving the verbal finger" to religion is only going to further mobilize the faithful.
Sam Harris's speech at the AAI conference encouraged us to take on each issue as it comes. If people try to teach religion in science class, put it down. If the US government inhibits stem cell research on the basis of religion, prove that he is violating the Constitution, but what needs to be realized is that simply saying "you're all full of crap," (which i agree with) and "therefore you're not worth having a discussion with," is going to get us nowhere.
