2. Charles Darwin was not the father of atheism

Comment #201840 by Thurston on June 30, 2008 at 10:02 am

George Pitcher is an ordained minister so perhaps his contribution was always going to be an answer to a question no one asked.

Comment #201825 by mikecbraun: that really made me laugh.

3. Oystein Elgaroy - the Christian defender who became an Atheist

Comment #195036 by Thurston on June 17, 2008 at 3:20 pm

I find this account very moving. His rejection of comfortable and unsupported ideas for the hard reality offered by science is quite profound. In a world that is suspicious of changes of mind and heart, Professor Elgaroy should be applauded for his courage.

4. Divine Impulses: Ayaan Hirsi Ali

Comment #192606 by Thurston on June 13, 2008 at 3:18 pm

Anyone who thinks atheists only rant and rage and are ignorant of the 'obvious' truths of religion should see these videos and read Ayaan's Infidel. What an inspiration she is!

5. Animal Science Without Evolution

Comment #184805 by Thurston on May 26, 2008 at 7:52 am

This witch's website is a joke:

Jeannie has spoken at many homeschool conferences, seminars and workshops. Because she is a busy homeschooling mom, she only schedules two out-of-town engagements each year; however, she is open to God's leading on other opportunities to bless homeschoolers, whether locally or out-of-town.

Homeschooling seems to be a tool for frightened parents to prevent their child experiencing the real world.

6. These dim-wits believe in anything but God

Comment #181443 by Thurston on May 17, 2008 at 8:35 am

There's a great reply to this in today's Telegraph:

Sir-George Pitcher claims that children are better off learning about theology than thermodynamics. Please let me, as a "dim-witted atheist", suggest why he is wrong.

Simply put: the real world into which children must grow up is not adequately described by the Bronze Age mythologies of Abraham - however intellectually easy it might be to accept their narratives.

The real world is beautifully described by evolution, chemistry, quantum physics and relativity - although these concepts require insight and even a few brain cells.

Mr Pitcher says he failed to "get" science at school, and so he condemned himself to cling, like an eternal child, to myth and magic.

OUCH!

7. Pat Condell: Anthology DVD available now!

Comment #172516 by Thurston on April 29, 2008 at 4:42 pm

I realise this is only a matter of taste, but I find his rants simplistic, and I have problem deciding what the purpose is and what the tone is supposed to be. Is it self-prompotion? Is it supposed to be funny?

I never imagined I'd agree with Dinesh D'Souza, but I always get the impression that Condell's pretty pleased with himself.

8. Anti-Evolution Film Misappropriates the Holocaust

Comment #172494 by Thurston on April 29, 2008 at 4:04 pm

This is good news. I heard Stein on Pat Robertson's farcical programme openly using his own ethnicity to promote his nonsensical holocaust claims.

I still can't work out whether Stein genuinely believes the drivel in this film or whether his motives are more cynical.

9. A New Flea

Comment #160157 by Thurston on April 13, 2008 at 6:35 pm

Stephen Maxwell,

Perhaps the irritating voices of the theologians is a strategy to help them get heard in an age when most people rightly ignore them. I'll take the dulcet tones of Hitchens and Vidal anyday.

Here is a video of the author Keith Ward getting nicely picked apart by Gore Vidal from a few years ago:

I shouldn't think his arguments are anything to worry about.

11. Mandrake: Charles's letter in support of Islamic 'fundamentalism'

Comment #113657 by Thurston on January 20, 2008 at 9:57 am

He is, like his social position, an accident of birth. "Proper fundamentalism"? "Western misrepresentation"? To be fair, however, the letter was written before September 11 and he has a point about the press.

13. The God Delusion and Alister E McGrath

Comment #82708 by Thurston on October 27, 2007 at 9:33 am

McGrath seems to have the time of his life in interviews like this, especially with no one to challenge him, but in debates (particularly the one he had recently with Christopher Hitchens) you can see he doesn't have a leg to stand on.
