I wish the Catholic Church would just shrivel up and die. I'm sick of them thinking they still have a say in this country (Ireland) and sick of non believers in this country not going to church but still getting marriges, communions, confirmations, funerals and christenings because it's 'tradition,' meanwhile paying ever increasing prices for these services and subsequently keeping the priests housed and fed and supplied with nice plump children. Even my own brother. I know, I know, it's more his girls idea and he, like too many men, doesn't care, just goes along with it but, she's a non-believer too. Nabdabbit.
Now I have to go to my nieces communion and try to smile through grit teeth and express how happy I am for her.
(and believe me, I have a Dr. Cox type personallity, this will make my face ache and it will test my patience).

I had a similar experience just looking at that now famous ape to man picture when I was a kid. That picture conveyed more to me then an words could've back then. I was only 8-10. It was before my confirmation anyway because faith was destroyed by then. I just wanted the money.

Although I must add hairylippy that I'm sure there's a fair number of people who would abort a down's syndrome fetus if it could be detected early. I for one wouldn't hold it against someone if they did but then again, I don't judge people in general (as a man I'm glad to say I'll never have to make that choice). Can't see how it could be cured though, at least not once the child has developed.

I personally agree with Daniel Dennets proposition about teaching children *the facts* about all the worlds religions ie history, teachings etc... although i do admit it'll be hard to not let my own views enter the subject.

It is annoying the way people call 'atheism' a faith. I fully agree with Sam Harris who thinks that we shouldn't even call ourselves atheists (I certainly don't go around talking like some parody of a Little Britain character, 'I'm the only ahteist in the village.) Other labels that annoy me too are 'Darwinist,' which in my mind is no different to being called 'Davidian,' and Neo-Darwinist, which draws parallels with Neo-Nazis. (probably the intention because it's the religious who seem to use it.) Another thing that annoys me is the 'Out Campaign,' which frankly I think, with it's advertisements showing young people wearing those horrible 'A' t-shirts, reminds me of some kind of secular version of 'BattleCry.' I've read John Grays works and I do admit enjoying them and agreeing on some points and even though I don't agree that atheism is like religion at all at all, I do think that we are guilty of doing things that make it seem that way.

Why were no religious evolutionists interviewed? So much for the unbiased account it is being advertised as and even purported to be on the IMDB reviews. Put together religious evolutionists make up more than the atheists, many believe evolution is gods creation so they already are intellignet designers but they have the cop-on to know that their beliefs can't be measured and so keep it out of science.

Why do people keep equating evolution with atheism anyway? There's more religious evolutionists than atheists when put together, many believe evolution is gods way of creating (so it's a form of creationism in that sense) even the lead scientist on the Killmister trial was a devout Christian. I hope religious scientists make a stand against this and other lay religious yet sensible people.

Yeah I agree with PJG. I didn't know that much about the movie when I first read this post but after quickly educating myself on it in a mere 20 minutes, reading reviews by Christians and learning the movies content, I can predict a shit-storm in America (who knows, maybe here in Ireland too) over this film. This is not good.

Why to they keep equating atheism with hedonism? Hedonism is a choice amongst atheists and I myself lived that life in my early 20's but, I just grew out of it. Gradually. No trumpets, no parade, now I immerse myself in books on various topics to keep my mind active and exercised. I never felt I had to cling to the life preserver of Christianity or any other religion to mend ways which I never thought needed mending because I didn't have the AA style guilt culture to make me feel debased, to lower me down to a miserable wretch so that it could build me back up again to be a man. (whatever that even means...how many roads must a man walk and all that) More indication that religion is for those with weak constitutions.
