2. Atheist Rap: Extian, The Verse from Atheist Nation Pt III

Comment #21249 by Kismettena on February 8, 2007 at 8:29 am

"It is almost invariably liberalwhite ppl who defend obnoxious ppl like this guy because almost anything said or done by anyone black must be alright, if any contortionism of the mind can render it so."

I can quote the whole thing. Your full comment did not move me to do anything except respond; I had seen the other videos long before reading what you'd written.
It is almost invariably (obnoxious) conservative white men who make these sorts of statements:
"Ppl need to stop wearing the PC glasses and see who exactly is saying what as it really is.

As if the fact that he's black rips a fucking hole in the space-time contiuum and renders moot our ability to criticize him. I liked him initially because I liked this particular video, and I'm not so sure now because of the gangbanging and self-fellating. Although you seem to be pretty capable of self-fellating as well, and you're WHITE...but of course that would be the conclusion I'd jump to, since I'm a PC-glasses-wearin' liberal and therefore hate white people.

By the way, when we "see who exactly is saying what," we draw different conclusions from those facts. But when we feel as though people are REFUSING to look at a particular characteristic of someone (for you in this instance, it's that he's black), and are moved to actually say something about it, a point about its importance is usually being made. I have a few speculations about what your point is. You can clarify, but I doubt you'd be willing to do that.

"almost anything said or done by anyone black must be alright"

Comments like these are a much more obnoxious than this guy's music.

On that note, I did watch some of his other videos and listen to more of his music, and the guns / "hole in my ex-girlfriend's stomach" line / self-worship thing *is* obnoxious. If religions and political parties are "nothing more than gangs," and they're obviously a bad thing, why the hell is he in a gang in the first place? I guess it's not really my place to judge right off the bat, because I haven't lived his life, but it negates the whole reason I liked him in the first place: because he was rejecting the gang mentality of religion in an artistic way. Seems like he's replacing one gang with another, and I can't really respect that.

It's too bad, because I really enjoy his music and he's obviously intelligent...he could do much better things with his time and influence a lot of people.

Saw him earlier and loved him. I still think he's great. Glad this was posted here; it does a lot to dispel the notion that atheists are stuffy. Besides, rapping is a powerful way to get a point across.

I love you, Sam.
I have to say that I've never believed in God, but my consciousness was raised to the hardships of women in this world before it was raised to the oppressive nature of most religions. One of the first ways in which I learned about atrocities committed via organized superstition was through doing research on feminism, so I really have feminism to thank for my being such an ardent atheist. It's always exciting to see religious views on women being addressed by an atheist I admire.

I'd like to see something written about the view of our fellow animals & nature in the Abrahamic religions as well.

Have felt pretty depressed since this a-hole began to oversee Title X. The only parallel I can currently think of is having Lil Markie oversee one's voice lessons...

Apparently a lot of people on here think Germaine Greer is a "viper" and an idiot, but she actually used to be pretty cool. I'm more disappointed in her because I admire a lot of what she's done and she really pissed on her own leg here. Correct me if I'm wrong, Germaine, but isn't "shrill" an adjective often used to silence people who are making a good point that you're too lazy to listen to? Coming from a feminist, this is pretty fucking disappointing.
Seriously, Germaine...wtf.

Shigawire-
Right on. That's exactly how I feel, and I happen to be American.

14. Conservative Atheists

I think conservatism would be more coherent without religion (as would any position). Political arguments tend to devolve when religion gets involved, and no one gets anywhere.

PS- I'm not out to attack conservatives or libertarians (I'm dating a libertarian, actually) nor am I assuming that the liberal view is the only one that contains rational arguments. I've come to the conclusion that my being a liberal is a result of my feelings more than anything else...I care about the disenfranchised and I care about our planet (I'd say this is rational but some would disagree), and this leads me to a liberal stance more often than not. Those same feelings may lead others in different directions. It's all about perspective, I guess...the experiences I had as a child living in poverty, then as a teenage girl, and finally as an unmarried (fornicating!), struggling atheist has no doubt influenced my politics.

Sancus-
I was quoting her. I wasn't the one who linked homophobia to 'traditional American values.' I seem to have a different conception of what those are, however, than many conservatives (or libertarians for that matter).

PS- yes, I know Michael Shermer's position on most things.

17. Conservative Atheists

Comment #17503 by Kismettena on January 14, 2007 at 7:20 am

It's hard for me to think of conservatives as rational, whether or not they believe in supernatural forces.

"They view marriage between a man and a woman as the surest way to raise stable, law-abiding children."
Sounds like an irrational view to me. The majority of the population is heterosexual, therefore children raised by hetero parents are going to be the dominant group of law-breakers AND law-abiders. Show me one study demonstrating that children raised by two men or two women are more likely to be unstable and / or break the law, and I'll change my tune.

It's nice to be reminded that not all conservatives are completely immune to reason, but I'd have to say I still think they're rather numb.

"Few acquaintances of Dr. Richard Dawkins, the world's most voluble public atheist, wonder, as they might have a hundred years ago: Can I leave my wife unchaperoned in this man's company?"

...What!?

"To a lot of atheists, the fate of civilization and of mankind depends on their ability to cool--or better, simply to ban--the fevered fancies of the God-intoxicated among us."

Ban??? Since when!?

"The new atheists remind me of other students from more "open-minded" homes--rigid, indifferent, puzzled by thought and incapable of sympathy."

Calling myself puzzled would be an understatement at this point.

19. Letter From America: Atheists throw down the gauntlet

Comment #15865 by Kismettena on January 3, 2007 at 11:46 am

Ugh, this is ridiculous.

I love how he mentions disbelief in God and belief in alien abductions in the same breath.

And even though everyone else seems to have commented on it: Christian fundamentalists not violent???? WHAT!? He needs to read that Blackwater article. I was recently talking to a marine stationed in Iraq who was working with these Blackwater fundies, who apparently had to be replaced because they were getting servicewomen drunk and assaulting them.
And I suppose Dr. Slepian was murdered by Muslims?

What an asshat.

And I'm SICK and tired of hearing atheists described as militant, it is a completely unfounded accusation. I'm a feminist. It reminds me of hearing Rush Limbaugh's asinine term 'feminazi' spewed by so many idiots who do not understand feminism in the least. Speak out against the status quo and you're not just uppity, you're 'militant.'

Excellent article!
Even if I had to see the words 'zeal' and 'evangelist' attached to Dawkins for the 1000th time. However 'wintery' describes him well. And the last sentence was actually pretty powerful. What many people don't seem to understand is that Dawkins isn't hating on anything but lies and unreason...he doesn't hate religion or the religious.

22. The Blasphemy Challenge

Comment #13182 by Kismettena on December 16, 2006 at 4:22 am

To Yorker and others who support said immature adolescents, thank you. I'm planning on sending in a clip of my own.

For some of Us Kids it's a serious matter, a way to let off steam...and for others it's for FUN. I don't see what's wrong with either.

To everyone on here who is against this: LIGHTEN UP!

It's a sign of the times, I think, that even atheists are all a-flutter over atheist youth speaking out against ghosts. Whether or not you realize it, you're condoning a culture of silence on religion when you don't want to allow the non-experts to speak. We tend to be the loudest, after all.
