1. Proposition 8 made me quit the Mormon church

Comment #284100 by William Kaiser on November 14, 2008 at 10:47 am

Jodi, what you should do now it to get as many people as possible to QUIT all religions.

Start with the Mormons, of course!

You have to at least double the number of people you converted to save your non-eternal soul!

Religions are just like drug gangs.

2. Does Religion Make You Nice?

Comment #280918 by William Kaiser on November 8, 2008 at 10:05 pm

I've always observed that a persons behavior always precedes however they choose to describe themselves. Religion is just a label used to justify whatever behavior one has.

I know a few people who say they are religious, yet are terrible to their fellows Humans. I cite the following study to illustrate.

“Bullies' Brains Light Up With Pleasure as People Squirm”
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2008/11/081107-bully-brain.html?source=rss

The opening sentence from the article.
“The brains of bullies - kids who start fights, tell lies, and break stuff with glee - may be wired to feel pleasure when watching others suffer pain, according to a new brain scanning study.”

Lest some argumentative person say “Oh, but those are kids they are talking about...” Let me use my favorite phrase “Everyone grows older, few “grow up.”

3. Anti-religion agenda among social media users

Comment #280917 by William Kaiser on November 8, 2008 at 10:04 pm

My turn to cozy up to the hole in the barrel that Diane Winston choose to inhabit.

“...atheist people want to convert people to their point of view...”

Wrong, I try to convince people that what they are “viewing” is a delusion. It's just like telling a hallucinating schizophrenic that what they see and hear is only in their head. That's not a point of view.

"The irony here is that atheism is a form of religion. You're still in something."

Yeah, we're still in the Human race. You should stop proclaiming religious people are better than Humans.

Comment by Lucas:
"It must be changed, and it must be changed quickly,"

I do agree is must be changed, but I would suggest doing it with great care. The XVIII amendment was done "quickly" and there were some pretty severe repercussions. The XXI amendment was added only thirteen years later to repeal it. Now that's what I call a quick response to a too hasty decision.

Let's all share a drink to celebrate the XXI amendment! :-)

... under the ridiculous 'electoral college' "system."

Richard, I agree that the XII amendment to the US Constitution is pretty ridiculous. It led to the ridiculous election of George W. Bush in 2000!

However, since it is in the Constitution, I would hesitate to mess with it. Why? Well if changes are made that seem reasonable to most, I'd be afraid that others would use it to try and add other, less well reasoned, changes.

Some overzealous "patriots" want to have an amendment to make desecrating the American flag illegal, thus making the flag some sort of "sacred cow." Desecrating the flag may not be the wisest thing to do and it may upset some folks, but freedom of expression is paramount.

Some overzealous "religious" folks want to ban same-sex marriage, thus making discrimination the law of the land.

I'm sure there are other groups that want to put an "Under God" statement in there too!

So I see the XII amendment as a benign tumor in an otherwise healthy body. The risk/benefits of infection from non-essential surgery must be carefully considered!

P.S. The most inane thing, among the many, I've heard from Sarah Palin was her explicit refusal to answer the moderators question about the economic situation in the US during the VP debate. Would you hire someone who refused to answer a pertinent question during a job interview?

7. Turek vs. Hitchens Debate: Does God Exist?

Comment #274291 by William Kaiser on October 29, 2008 at 10:07 pm

I am so bored with these "debates." They find stupider and stupider people to argue with Hitch and the rest.

I think now that Richard Dawkins is retiring, he should offer touring debates with him as the moderator. Professor Dawkins could announce at the beginning of each debate that the theist arguments are verbatim quotes from "real" debates.

But.... forget about having the typical morons arguing for the theist side. Have someone like Ricky Gervais do the religious nutter character. He could use all the standard arguments, he wouldn't even have to exaggerate. He's excellent at playing a dim-witted fool. ;-)

People of diminished capacity will believe that it is a real debate. It will be hilarious when their fellow nutters, who have a few more IQ points, tell them that the debate was not real!

It might actually teach a few people who side with the theist arguments how weak the arguments actually are.

Just a thought. :-)

8. 'People say I'm strident'

Comment #272059 by William Kaiser on October 27, 2008 at 12:17 am

Yes, I agree, Dr. Dawkins is shrill and strident.

Shrill and strident in the way a parent is when they see their child running full tilt towards a cliff. Screaming for them to stop.

In this case, the child in question in the Human Race. The cliff is religion. A few seconds of blissful falling with certain death at the bottom.

Comment #270896 by William Kaiser on October 24, 2008 at 10:28 pm

Another strange thing from the last paragraph.

"...it may fuel the notion that people have to be antagonistic to those of other faiths."

Does she not know that different faiths thrive on being antagonistic to each other?

Does she think atheism is some sort of faith?

The most moderate atheist, some would say agnostic, simply asks for evidence. None has been presented so far.

10. Creationists declare war over the brain

Comment #270005 by William Kaiser on October 23, 2008 at 2:13 pm

I'd like to suggest to the authors of any articles about the Discovery Institute they they start off every article with a standard “warning” paragraph. Something along these lines.

“We have a new assault on rationality by the Discovery Institute. They have spent millions of dollars trying to undermine the Constitution of the United States and overthrow the American government and replace it with what they call a “Christian” Theocracy. Their actions have been fully documented and some of their more overt attempts have been thoroughly repudiated in US Federal Courts. Keep in mind that the arguments they present in this instance are made by an extremely small group of people, few of them actually have degrees in the fields they claim expertise. The vast majority of people working in all fields of science find absolutely no merit in the claims made by the Discovery Institute.”

Having a disclaimer at the beginning of an article will help the reader understand the true context of the Discovery Institutes agenda and scrupulously evaluate any claims for fallacies.

WK

P.S. End each article with this phrase. “If you have faith, you don't need proof. If you have proof, you don't need faith.”

11. All aboard the atheist bus campaign

Comment #268303 by William Kaiser on October 21, 2008 at 4:45 pm

Sometimes the bus might be moving to fast to read wordy adverts so maybe cut it down to two words and a searing image?

Here's the phrase....
"GODS' VICTORIES!"

And underneath there would be images of of the worst atrocities committed in the name of religion. Sometimes there would be more than one image so that the "That's not my religion" apologists would be stymied.

In the US there would be, obviously, a picture of the World Trade Center burning. In the UK maybe a picture of the July 7 double-decker bus, in Spain the Madrid train. Or course put right next to those images a drawing of a person being tortured by an Inquisitioner or of Jerusalem being sacked by a Crusader. In Iraq an image of mosques being destroyed by the warring Islamic sects. Any image of Human suffering committed in the name of any religion.

In the US there was a series to anti-drug adverts with this phrase "This is your brain on drugs," with negative images. Maybe do the same and say "This is your brain on religion," with those same nasty images for the "gods' victories" campaign?

12. All aboard the atheist bus campaign

Comment #268235 by William Kaiser on October 21, 2008 at 3:02 pm

Reply to Ian Bamlett's comment #90

Ian, besides being ego gratifying, the slogans here are not all simply replacements for the current slogan, they are additional slogans that can be used in a growing campaign. Imagine the possibilities.

I would like to change your mind, and others here, about campaigning as a "group." I, for one, would love to see this campaign NOT being promoted as an "us vs them" argument. It might be characterized as "us vs us." If deity doubters aren't faced with the radical choice of leaving a side to join another they might see that deity promoters are just too limiting, stifling, narrow minded, etc. You get the picture, I hope. No need to promote non-belief, just highlight the negatives of faith.

An example of a campaign that is not about sides is most anti-drug campaigns. They don't promote an "us vs them" mentality, they try to show that there are just so many bad things about drug use without even needing to promote the benefits of a drug free life. Not having the negatives is reason enough to change.

That's how I think a 'god free' campaign should be done.

16. The camp that 'cures' homosexuality

Comment #262399 by William Kaiser on October 8, 2008 at 12:47 pm

I see a rather simple reason for "religions" to be intolerant of anything other than rabid homophobia. Many hierarchically organized social groups of mammals have a dominant alpha male. One of the well known ways the alpha male dominates the other males is to violently "mount" them. It's power, not sex, that underlies this behavior.

Humans are just another hierarchically organized social group of mammals, the using of sexually violent domination is commonplace. Since there is almost no survival benefit for Humans to be consciously aware of these factors, Humans remain ignorant of how these behaviors can affect the psychological well being of other Humans.

Now, since the most damaging aspect of most "religions" is to intellectualize dominant alpha male behavior and since Humans are totally ignorant as to why they behave in this manner, the dominant alpha male in the religion unknowingly behaves as if a male member of the group that enjoys sex with other males will NOT fear being "mounted" by the alpha male, thus undermining the alpha males dominance.

Of course, alpha Human dominance behavior in not limited to male on male. Male on female domination via sexual violence is well documented. Female on female and female on male sexual violence are also in the mix.

If it was widely known that much of what is preached by most, if not all, religions was based on the same behaviors that underlie "rape," it might be a catalyst to really improve the state of Humanity.

Nahhhhh... that's too much to hope for, never mind.

WK

P.S. I'm a hetero-TRY-sexual. I keep TRY-ing to to have heterosexual sex with attractive women. My success rate is fairly poor. :-(

17. The rival to the Bible

Comment #261968 by William Kaiser on October 7, 2008 at 5:16 pm

I agree, it will have little or no effect with many believers.

Most of the believers I've met know more about the lyrics of their favorite song than what is written in any "holy" book. They just like to sing along with their "holy" man every once in a while.

For the seriously devout religious types, they will end up doing what Joseph Smith did, they will write their own "word of god" book.

It amuses me greatly when someones says their bible is "the word of god" when most books in the various versions have titles like "gospel of john" or "Epistle to the Hebrews." Why aren't all these books of the bible called "gospel of god - part 1" or something like that? ;-)

Maybe a little Methamphetamine?

From Wikipedia:
"...Amphetamine psychosis can include delusions, hallucinations and thought disorder...

...thought disorder or formal thought disorder is a term used to describe a pattern of disordered language use that is presumed to reflect disordered thinking."

Maybe be this could be the cause of Mr. Fanti's statements.

21. Brunswick school board to consider creationism teaching

Comment #256200 by William Kaiser on September 29, 2008 at 12:29 am

Yo, Jimmy Hobbs, I'll bet that you don't and no one else in your community would ever read this forum so my questions to you are just an exercise in futility.

Jimbo, what law prohibits bibles in school?

Jimbo, evolution IS taught as a scientific theory, the "facts" available support it.

Jimbo, you and your ignorant pal Shirly should not only look at the law about the subject, y'all should read about what the US courts have said about how the law applies specifically to your questions.

Shirly, does your General Assembly tell you to teach evolution or do they tell that the law(s) say that creationism can not be taught as a scientific theory in a publicly funded (by tax payers) school?

Are y'all ready to be sued and cost the taxpayers several million dollars just like what happened in Dover PA?

Y'all should read a fraking dictionary.

Y'all should consult some competent, well read lawyers.

Y'all make me sick with your extreme ignorance, your blatant stupidity and your overbearing arrogance.

Two questions for my learned friends on this forum.

#1 Could someone here research to see how many of the god-in-the-gaps folks are spouting the "Quantum Mechanical" explanation of deities after the publication of "What the Bleep Do You Know?" and the movie?

I have a feeling that it might be somewhat akin to the number of people now who believe that the Kennedy assassination was a giant conspiracy after the release of the movie "JFK" by Oliver Stone.

#2 Would Mr. Ward and others writers who believe that they can convince the members of this forum that their arguments are valid allow the registered members of this forum to view an on line and/or downloadable version of their works? What have they got to lose? A few quid?

Comment #246092 by William Kaiser on September 11, 2008 at 7:36 pm

Yes, I agree creationism should be taught in a "science" class.

HOLD ON! Listen to my plan. It might satisfy both sides. Well, actually it will satisfy the rational more than the irrational because the irrational might not be able to understand what I really propose!

#1 - Call it "Ancient Science 101." Make it an elective class that is available only to students who have first passed at least intermediate level science classes.
#2 - Make the class description something like this... "Ancient scientific ideas are discussed along with their historical antecedents and modern equivalents. The contributions of ancient and modern science to today's technological world are also discussed. Some of the ancient ideas are Creationism, Astrology, Alchemy, Earth-Centric Universe among others."

Can you see what I'm doing here? I'm slipping them the Kool-Aid. They're providing the straw.

The creationists, ID'ers and Young Earth morons will think they are getting equal time. But students will learn what ancient vs. modern science has contributed to our modern technological world.

Let me repeat, this class is only for students who have passed at least intermediate level science classes.

Please feel free to add more ancient "sciences" to the class. ;-)

The depressing thing about it is that the god-Nazis have just about cornered the market of social gatherings in many areas.

Just imagine a place where people could go to socialize with friends and strangers without having to be subservient to some god-Nazi. It horrifying to have to be in the same room with some person who makes violent threats such as "You WILL burn in hell if you don't obey me!" I seriously doubt that the "bible" explicitly states that the Earth is 6000 years old. Can anyone stomach looking into it to confirm or deny this "fact?"

Wasn't the age of the Earth "calculated" by a few people during the Middle Ages? And then this patently incorrect "calculation" simply repeated by the ignorant down through the years?

Isn't it also correct to say that the "bible" does not have a single reference to anything remotely connected with evolution? So that anyone who claims that the "bible" somehow refutes evolution is making a completely inaccurate statement?

To me, the term "literal translation" is the epitome of an oxymoron. I just checked the definition for both words and they just don't belong together. It's like saying "fact guess".

One must have an inferior intellectual capacity to not see this obvious truth!

Those of us who are enlightened realize that the other side of our flat world is the domain of His Holy Pasta-ness, the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

I, for one, wish FSM to send His Sauce Covered Sacred Meatball to vanquish the non-believers.

The Holy FSM is My Own Personal Cheeses.

P.S. Apologies to Depeche Mode for the jab ;-)

42. The Boundaries of Belief

Comment #205792 by William Kaiser on July 7, 2008 at 7:31 pm

Just ask a person if they fit the definitions below.
Even the dumbest person in the world should eventually realize whether the definitions fit.

DEFINITION OF ATHEIST ACCORDING TO SEVERAL DICTIONARIES.:

dictionry.com
A person who denies or disbelieves the existence of a supreme being or beings

merriam-webster.com
One who believes that there is no deity

Wikitionary.org
1) A person who does not believe that deities exist; one who lacks belief in gods
2) A person who believes that no deities exist; one who denies the existence of all gods

freedictionary.com
One who disbelieves or denies the existence of God or gods

MSN.com
unbeliever in God or deities: somebody who does not believe in God or deities

Websters
One who disbelieves or denies the existence of a God, or supreme intelligent Being

WK
P.S. Never ask survey questions with double negatives!
"Sir, do you not still beat your dog or do you disagree? Please answer the question in the negative or positive if you don't disagree."
That's a joke, Wilbur ;-)

43. Charles Darwin was not the father of atheism

Comment #202128 by William Kaiser on June 30, 2008 at 11:37 pm

This article, even with all it's crap, is somehow interesting to me. It seems as if the author is saying that deity believers should not hate Darwin, just hate Dawkins. It almost seems as if the author wants deity believers to accept evolution as true because he says, rightly or wrongly, that Darwin was not a true atheist.

The last two lines are mighty positive sounding for a batsheetcrazy person.

"Unlike today's posturing and positioning, he was a brave and honest explorer of all that makes us work. That's what we should be celebrating and aspiring to recapture this week."

Please don't think I'm some kind of closet believer, there are no deities. Period.

Robert O', pardon me if how I phrase things appears to you as "rudeness." I won't argue that point, I'm just the cheeky sort.;-)

However, you remind me of the "Philosophers Corner" scene in "The Life of Brian." You take yourself so very seriously as you babel on and on, whilst your neighboring "philosopher" uses the exact same argument as yours to come to the opposite conclusion.

No verbal argument can "prove" the physical existence of anything that only exists in the psyche of us Human animals. Please don't bother telling anyone that you can, it comes off as supreme hubris.

WK.

P.S. My previous description of your philosophical style can be summed up it just two words, rectal-cranial inversion. Or is that three? :-)

P.P.S. OOOOOOO, I'm so ruuuude!

P.P.P.S. Lighten up, Booby ole boy. Life's too short and there is no after life.

Robert O' Robert.... my goodness.. aren't you the little smarty pants! I bet your mater is quite proud of her little philosopher!

The universe doesn't care who you quote. Philosophy can't fuse hydrogen into helium, can it?

Have a nice day!

Robert O'Brien can prove anything.

All one has to do is follow that time tested formula of sticking one's cranium so far up the exit of one's alimentary canal that's one peers upon the universe from the back of one's mouth.

From my point of view the universe will function without regard to what some semi sentient being might opine.

Brungardt, you ask "Do they take THEMSELVES seriously?"

It's sickening, but I'm sure they do. :-(

Just like schizophrenics with auditory or visual hallucinations will swear what they hear or see is REAL, reality deniers (evolution, big bang, global warming, etc.) will violently deny any or all evidence that is presented.

I am convinced that the thing that scares people who think this way the most is that someday soon it will be scientifically demonstrated that religiosity and batshitcrazy insanity are actually indistinguishable!

How many copies of a book have sold? Who knows?
I now use a method that is available to everyone, the World Wide Web!

Booksellers Sales Rankings!

The God Delusion:
Amazon sales ranking - 188
Barnes & Noble sales ranking - 1124

The Devil's Delusion: Atheism and Its Scientific Pretensions:
Amazon sales ranking - 2455
Barnes & Noble sales ranking - 14204

WK

P.S. Yes..... I know, these are only relative rankings and not the quantity of books sold or even a ratio of one to the other. But it's indisputable proof that Richard outsells the flea authors at two major book sellers!

P.P.S. These sales rankings change constantly, check them out for yourselves when you have the time.

50. Logical Proof of the Existence of a Divine Creator, Why Atheism is Not Logically Sound

Comment #191566 by William Kaiser on June 11, 2008 at 8:42 am

Would some please forward the following to the author of the article, I fear e-mail spam more than any angry deity.
- - -

Mr. Postelnick,
I feel sorry for you, believing in a Divine Creator that is not intelligent enough to create a universe that is more complex than 'the youngest school child...' can comprehend.

I would be willing to bet that you will respond, in essence, by saying that you 'know' the mind of the Divine Creator. Well, to me, that would strongly imply that you are as smart as the Divine Creator. If you are not as smart as the Divine Creator than you could not, in good conscious, make any claim of 'knowing' any more about the Divine Creator than 'the youngest school child...'.

WK
P.S. The reasons for your, and countless other Humans, belief in a Divine Creator are so very complex that it might take millions of people thousands of years for people, using true scientific methodology, to document the mechanism. Your belief in a Divine Creator has absolutely no more validity than 'the youngest school child(s)...' belief in Santa Claus. It is your overwhelming arrogance and self centered viewpoint that will forever doom you and much of Humanity.
