2. Porn pastor's wife vows to stand by him

Comment #237315 by Faithhead on August 26, 2008 at 10:45 am

She insisted he was a good man, trapped by lies which had spiralled out of control.blockquote>

I will never understand how she can stand by him after this. This guy makes the people on Jerry Springer look normal

3. Kamikaze bacteria illustrate evolution of co-operation

Comment #235475 by Joe Morreale on August 23, 2008 at 5:51 am

Is it possible for mods to move these comments to somewhere more appropriate? (The Good, The Bad, The Ugly) It has got nothing to do with the article and they are just preaching.

Lorcan

4. Why Dawkins is right and his critics are wrong

Comment #235520 by Faithhead on August 23, 2008 at 7:08 am

Rowan Williams is an emperor with no clothes, and in this film we glimpsed his nakedness

Nice description. He is not really that smart he just gains a lot of respect by conceding nearly everything to science but the absolute basics of his faith. He says that if there was a big bang, well then, god made it happen, and that god set the laws of physics and kind of sat back and let everything happen and that evolution was part of his divine plan. This sort of deceptive faith is not really that much better than the outright kind.

Its is just as wrong, just not as blatent.

And what does Dawkins do? He tries to persuade them to become atheists!

This is a lie. Like Paula has said please retract or provide quotes etc. to prove your implications.

5. Richard Dawkins replies to Libby Purves

Comment #226793 by Faithhead on August 8, 2008 at 5:05 pm

Thanks for the link Robert_S!!! Here is an exert of her article:

Note that only 22 per cent chose creationism and 17 per cent 'intelligent design"(few people know what that means, I suspect, and some will simply think it means that if there is a Creator he is intelligent). Asked what should be taught in school science, 69 per cent went for evolution. Better if it was 100 per cent, of course, but it hardly suggests an overwhelming scepticism shared by the entire population outside of - er - Hampstead Garden suburb.

How naive is she! How could she even begin to defend such stats. This is a prime example of how ignorance can run rampant, even in Britain.

6. Jefferson Bible reveals Founding Father's view of God, faith

Comment #214970 by Faithhead on July 21, 2008 at 5:57 am

To pick up on what PJG said

Isn't this what ALL Christians do?

Damn right it is!!

For a lot of people, taking scissors to the Bible would be such an act of desecration they wouldn't do it," Ritchie said.

But that is in essence what every christian does. They arbitrarily chose to believe only 4 of the gospels of Jesus because a few men hundreds of years ago decided it was best. Some moderate, intelligent christians go as far as to ignore the ridiculous over the top miracles, and assign those type of events as merely parables. Whats the point!! Its the infallible word of god or not!! You dont get to chose what parts are right and which are wrong.

Its like christopher hitchens says
ask any moderate, intelligent christian do they believe in the virgin birth and you get some monty python type answer "Well its not really that simple "Its kind of metaphorical...".

Christians have been cherry picking the bible for years, at least thomas jefferson was open about it and made it clear that it needs to be done in order to have any chance of staying mildly relevent to peoples lives.

7. 'Condoms won't change HIV rates'

Comment #212117 by Faithhead on July 16, 2008 at 4:16 pm

How much blood must they have on their hands. How much more obvious must Science make it for them. A freind of mine uses the term and at time I am close to agreeing with him, he says "its nothing short of passive genocide". They trust their spiritual leader, believe them and follow them. They have no idea the evil being inflicted by such disgusting Dogma.

8. IT'S A GODDAMNED CRACKER!

Comment #207210 by Faithhead on July 9, 2008 at 10:27 am

All this talk of crackers makes me hungry...

9. McDonald's Makes Jesus Cry

Comment #206590 by Faithhead on July 8, 2008 at 1:57 pm

"Dear, McDonald's. Last week I ate a cheeseburger at your restaurant. If I would've known it was created by gay loving hands, I wouldn't have purchased it. Don't you guys know gays were behind the holocaust? First Jews, and now the family. What is next, McDonald's? Are you going to help gays eradicate sand? WHAT WILL WE DO WITHOUT SAND!?!?"

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.....................................hahahahahahahahahahah
ahahahahahahaha.........................hahahahahahaha.........You can't make this stuff up!!

10. A trip to the Creation Museum

Comment #206583 by Faithhead on July 8, 2008 at 1:40 pm

At least they suscribe to new scientist, an institution of truth. They can well afford it with their 22$ admission

11. When too much Rapture is barely enough

Comment #204718 by Faithhead on July 5, 2008 at 3:27 pm

Spot on again Sam!

And less of these moderates hiding behind their excuses that extreme belief lies on the fringe.

44% aint no fringe

Grow up and stop waiting on the apocalypse as if it were christmas.

12. Former state science director sues over intelligent design e-mail

Comment #203841 by Faithhead on July 3, 2008 at 8:03 pm

Okay this is probably a stupid Q. But the judge makes it seem like ther could be a distinction between ID and creationism. I always thought they were different names for the same thing. Is this true??

13. Science is thrilling - except in our schools

Comment #203696 by Faithhead on July 3, 2008 at 11:30 am

The crowning glory was that I didn't even get to dissect a frog, which was commonly anticipated as the most exciting lesson, for which I was bloody well off sick

BSE ruined our Biology syllabus. I live in Ireland and, at the teachers discretion, she used to bring in heart, lungs, brain, tongue and anything else she could get at the butcher. When I reached leaving cert(British Alevels) all we got to watch-whilst previous years used to preform-was a dissection-of a Cow's heart.

Currently studying science in college, I had to replace my scalpal twice in one year I used it so much. I dont think there is an appreciation for the truly facinating aspects of Science.

15. Fire the starting gun! The Darwin year begins...NOW!

Comment #202600 by Faithhead on July 1, 2008 at 4:29 pm

So it's a Darwin-win situation.

*Groan*

Happy birthday Origin, You have brought enlightenment for 150 years to those willing to listen!!!

16. Charles Darwin was not the father of atheism

Comment #201872 by Faithhead on June 30, 2008 at 11:03 am

But I just want to suggest that Darwin wasn't the father of atheism

Really...

It can't be...

Where's my Bible...

Oh wait, I knew all this already. At what point did his rebucke the fact Darwin's finding tore down one of the strongest and most commonly held Dogma's of the christian(and i'm sure other) faith.

Hahahaha. Good one eh-theist

17. Creationist critics get their comeuppance

Comment #200065 by Faithhead on June 26, 2008 at 6:50 pm

Richard Lenski is an inspiration to true scientists. His dedication in research and comprehensive analysis (of every 500 generations) puts his results as close to unquestionable as one can get in scientific circuits.

Of coarse it is another blow to anti-evolutionists, which will be arogantly ignored by creationists but I think the work and research should be enough to draw its own plaudits.

Well done

Is it just me or is Michael Behe the biggest Dick ever!! What quazi-college gave him a degree in biochemistry.

18. An Interview with Prof. Richard Dawkins

Comment #199396 by Faithhead on June 25, 2008 at 5:15 pm

I definately avoid the discussion of creationism with anyone who believes it, but it drives me mad when I here 'well, its just a theory' when I discuss evolution.

As petty as it sounds it would be nice to have a compilation of facts to shove down their throats.

19. Evolutionarily Preserved Signature Found In The Primate Brain

Comment #199095 by Faithhead on June 25, 2008 at 7:21 am

We have all seen the studies released that clarify a genetic difference between sexes and heteros and homos, so I think it is just a matter of time until you have a wacky geneticist out there claiming he can 'fix' the 'problem' and put you 'right in the eyes of the Lord forever more' I can hear em now. It is a scary thought, but definitely plausible. Research like this has implications that go far beyond the pale when expounded by radicals. Thats what I meant

Its sad we must consider the implications of genetic research like this. I wont be as bold as saying we should disregard the religious take on this(because unfortunately I can hear the fundy responce too)but I applaud the research and would definately be interested in reading the findings when they are published.

I guess if you wanted to make a long shot, you could argue that homosexuality among certain individuals may enhance other individuals' chance of reproduction.

Or, it might in a general sense provide a more stable/secure environment in some odd ways that is positive for the collective set of genes in society. I have no idea. Just thoughts.

However, that sort of sounds like martyrdom genes, or goes into "group selection" territory.

I would not really be inclined to think in these terms. If homosexuality had any genetic link, regardless of the alturistic benifits it would be too severely selected against by selection pressures to survive.

Is it possible that homosexuality is caused by a mis-firing of some other evolutionary trait?

More likely. Not that this carries any negative connoctations as some religious folk would like to infer.

If homosexuality harms no one - who cares!

Seconded

20. World Youth Day condom protest against Pope

Comment #199079 by Faithhead on June 25, 2008 at 7:06 am

"He is clearly a bigot ... many in the Catholic Church are also raising these issues, condemning the Pope for his hateful ideas."

If a person says it, its discrimination.
If the pope says it it becomes Dogma.
No double standards!
Either man should be free to discriminate openly.
Or the Pope (and by extention God-Papal infallibility) is a bigot.

21. Saudi Marriage Officiant : 'It Is Allowed To Marry A Girl At The Age Of One'.

Comment #199075 by Faithhead on June 25, 2008 at 7:00 am

You can have a marriage contract even with a one-year-old girl..... This is merely a contract [indicating] consent.

Oh well, if the one year old consented!!!

22. Mormons urged to back ban on same-sex marriage

To take liberty with a D. Adams quote:

'religion must love the changing moral zeitgeist, or at least the sound it makes as it whizzes by'

23. The Flea Delusion

Comment #198388 by Faithhead on June 23, 2008 at 5:41 pm

Funny, now they are writing fleas about fleas!

Someone already said it but RD and co. are making a livelyhood for a lot of oppourtunistic bullshitters.

Are people really that desperate to believe that TGD was just a cheap hoax.

24. Muslim countries win concession regarding religious debates

Comment #197332 by Faithhead on June 21, 2008 at 6:53 pm

The U.N. sicken me! They are a spineless, inept, useless organisation. Their action on iraq: nothing, rwanda: zilch I write this whilst furious at the above article, but this is a travesty

25. Should Strident British Atheist Richard Dawkins Dictate Education Policy to US States? Barbara Forrest Apparently Thinks So

Comment #197330 by Faithhead on June 21, 2008 at 6:46 pm

If a tenth grader can understand arguments for Darwinism, she can understand scientific arguments against it

True, I propose if you think anti-darwinist propaganda should be allowed into an educational facility, then it seems only fair that the educational theory of evolution be preached in your church, because if a tenth grader can understand arguments for God's design, she can understand scientfic arguments against it

26. New discovery proves 'selfish gene' exists

Comment #197325 by Faithhead on June 21, 2008 at 6:23 pm

This little item irritated me at first. I thought the writer either hadn't got RD's original use of selfish or had thrown in a second use.

I now think he has understood it, but a looseness of phrasing scuppers other people's possible understanding

I agree, this is very poorly written and thank you phil rimmer, the rephase helped.

Two points.
1. The writer uses the term selfish way too loosly. RD goes to great length in the preface to the 30th anniversary selfish gene edition to clear up the misunderstanding and misquoatations of this concept and it is articles like this which do no good to add clarity to the metaphor.
2. Perhaps being over critical but from a genetics point of view, the gene is more properly named in terms of it directly observed phenotypic effect. I.e. the gene controlling the mating type of yeast is known as mata and the HOX gene controlling the appearance and position of the eye in drosphilia is the eyless gene(cuz fly is eyless when gene is mutated). On this points should the article not read, new discovery proves 'sterile gene' exists. Not as catchy though :)

27. Divine Impulses: Ayaan Hirsi Ali

Comment #196388 by Faithhead on June 19, 2008 at 8:50 pm

Does religion turn people into austere ass holes, or do austere ass holes gravitate towards religion?

The reason I ask is that as soon as Ireland got rid of the influence of the Catholic no-fun brigade, it immediately acquired a cohort of self-appointed guardians of the national interest who were almost completely indistinguishable. Except they attached themselves to political correctness and the lunatic fringe of the green lobby.

Good point elephant, however off topic it might be.

But even the most lunatic fringes of a political party could not rationalise the horrors that a religiously indoctronated person could justify.

Im sure a religious person would point straight to their favourite example Hitler and the Nazi party at this point. But tell a soldier to cut and mutilate a childs genitals, to blow himself up in a school, to commit atrocities on a scale unimaginable, and not because your ordered to, but because its the morally and spiritually correct thing to do. Sick.

Aayan Hirsi Ali's story is an example of what true reason, rational and bravery can achieve.

28. Rapture site sends unbelievers their last chance ... via email

Comment #195063 by Faithhead on June 17, 2008 at 4:12 pm

There are oh so many things wrong with this :)

It would be humorous if it was't probably going to make money.

Hopefully the rapture is not TOO quick though. I want to check my e-mails just in case...
