Comment #127368 by Tomcat on February 15, 2008 at 7:50 am
Well, when you're the most important country in the world, who cares about if you know anything about the other ones?
Or that's the idea. I think what's more astounding is that "eggheads" often can explain to you all about physics and evolution, but they don't "know" how to talk to people at a party...

I absolutely applaud Richard for saying this in the interview. THIS is the factor that will CONVINCE SOOO many people that atheists are ok.
Way of the Master, get ready for your religion to turn into "cult" status.

I think she morally dumbfounded him. O'Rielly was reduced to "I know what you're saying makes sense, but I just know it's wrong."
Way to go, Lori!

"I have no difficulty understanding why Dawkins is on the list. His intemperate rantings against religion are probably enough to turn a lot of people who might otherwise be sympathetic off the idea of atheism. There are passages in 'the God Delusion' where he sounds positively derranged."
I second this statement.
My vote is for Chuck Norris. What a disappointment...

Comment #20 Bonzai: Haha. So the truth comes out. The only reason why people don't like him is because people here don't like touchy-feely things and singing. Do you have a real argument?

"Where does he say anything about how we "should" believe? He is saying that there is a utility logic (among other things)to why people believe in what they do and it is the job of science to investigate that instead of just saying these people are idiots because their beliefs are false, end of story. "
Exactly. There is a tremendous amount of overlooked mysteries waiting to be discovered in this area. We have such a dearth of knowledge here. I'd wager that study of religion in a more scientific sense would make tremendous contributions to solving many of the unknowns that the mind sciences are dealing with at present

All hail the new atheist prophets! For their strategy has brought us fame and glory. We must understand that all strategies have been tried before this recent surge in book sales! It is the only one that works! This is the one true coming of our messiahs!
9. Fighting the Fundamentalists

I applaud Ruse for writing this. I don't agree with everything he said, but today's atheists are too quick to condemn true allies in this war on irrationality simply because they are more sensitive to the importance or religion to some people, and they refuse to dehumanize and mock God-believers even though he disagrees with them.
This essay is a call for sensitivity in dialog and diplomacy, without compromise on the fundamentals and purity of what we believe as atheists. He may hold to different truths than I, but it is a call to cooperation nonetheless. And it can be done, but those who insult their allies in this struggle for truth are NOT helping the progress towards results.
Those who say Ruse is a sellout: you may disagree with him, but there are far better results to be achieved if you treat him as the friend, ally, and colleague he truly is. Count your blessings, atheists. We have very few, and it may be too late to erase the simple divisions that keep us from bringing about any of the results we are hoping for.
In order to truly make an impact in a theist-run world, we must be able to show sensitivity to the importance of religion to those on the other side of the table, but resolve to respectfully disagree. This is the path to RESULTS

This has to be the most disgusting and beautiful thing I have seen in a long time. I am floored by both the reaction of the old man and the way that Mike handled it. It was a great gesture of human compassion.
To "philos":
"The audience walked out because of the harsh language and graphic content; that's it."
No. He also had his work destroyed by a self-righteous bigot.
"I would have walked out too, with The God Delusion under my arm"
Like your own badge of self-righteousness? I suggest you get over yourself first.

This is an excellent turn of events. Having such a prominent conservative broadcast to her peers that she doesn't need religion to be moral or conservative for that matter is powerful stuff. I hope she causes a stir.

Logicel, I have come up with some adjectives (and their noun forms as well)
The best one I came up with was:
(adj, noun) Transpassionate(s) - someone who has risen above the corporeal aspects of the human by declaring themselves logical, of thought only. Seeking to abstain from child-like, lower stages in human to transhuman development. A distaste for the impulses of the flesh.
Also "Disimpassionates" seemed like a good label. I came up with a more dicey one too: "Phlegmatose" Basically an elitist corpse, or elitist zombie! But I do not wish to bring common use to a word that insults my peers, so I'd rather stick with calling them Transpassionates for I believe it adequately describes the situation

Yea, you won't be laughing when we start changing the American zietgiest because of things like this. You will be cheering. The current world situation demands an approach such as this one. I fully support this.

Skeptics! All of you! This sort of activity is absolutely necessary, especially in the US. This is about breaking taboos, exactly like Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins have spoken about extensively. Atheism will not be able to take hold with the common people unless we break these taboos, so come down off your high horses and play with us "children" some!
