to post something substantive

God is Spirit. If you expect to find signs of a physical god, you will be disappointed.

I am a gun owner

Is that good?

I would use them to prevent the unification of church and state.

I think unification of church and state would to the church losing it's power. The church hierarchy could then be selected by the state....

You are to understand that it was Christian clergy who ruined the lives of countless innocent children. And then more clergy that actively tried to sweep it under the rug and put the same sickos in positions of power over more unsuspecting children.

I agree with you entirely. I don't believe in there being clergy, nor a formal established church, nor a church linked to the government.

Interesting that in the US, where the church is separate from the state, religion is more extreme.

Peace,

Maybe he is a kiddie fiddling priest, the genuine article. He could be telling the truth.

When a priest rapes a 10 year old boy, is it permissible to wear a condom or not? I just don't know.

Well, I hope you opposed the invasion of Iraq.

what evidence we see around us points to the lack of design.

I would disagree, entirely.....

but then we clearly see different things. You are committed to not believing in God, so you do not see.

8. Why Darwin matters

Comment #130372 by The Bishop on February 20, 2008 at 12:44 pm

I won't believe in this God person

Let's be honest. Atheism is very facile. You are a one issue movement and don't like to grapple with the difficult issues of life.

9. Why Darwin matters

Comment #130367 by The Bishop on February 20, 2008 at 12:38 pm

They are so slippery. "That isn't my God" "That isn't what I believe." "This isn't my religion".

Basically, if it is good and you don't object to it, then that is me, if it is bad, those people are just crazy and don't practice 'my' religion.

Is your position so very different? to quote you:

I have nothing in common with Einstein except a lack of belief in a personal God

Atheism is so easy.

Goes like this:

I don't believe in God.
No-one else's opinion is my concern, unless I agree with it

We are all still atheists

That just proves you still have free will.

12. Why Darwin matters

Comment #130313 by The Bishop on February 20, 2008 at 9:32 am

Sorry to have been away for a bit. Just had one of my parishioners knock at the door asking for some advice on how to deal with a couple of rather persistent atheists who seem to have take up going round door to door selling copies of the "God Delusion". I mean, can you believe it...trying to sell them. Surely, they should be giving them away.

Anyway, we've been having a bit of an impromptu prayer meeting for you all.

13. Why Darwin matters

Comment #130286 by The Bishop on February 20, 2008 at 8:12 am

What technique do you use to understand the scriptures better than them?

Well, Jesus himself specifically warned against this.

Mark 13

No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come.

This passage comes at the end of the part where Jesus discusses the second coming. He is very clear here, that no-one knows when it will happen.

Anyone claiming to be a Christian, who thinks he can provoke God into acting before He is ready, is a fool.

14. Why Darwin matters

Comment #130280 by The Bishop on February 20, 2008 at 8:03 am

However, some religious actively want to use them to initiate the second coming.

So I have heard. And they are wrong. They are behaving much as the Pharisees and the Teachers of the Law which Jesus opposed. They have not understood their own scriptures.

15. Why Darwin matters

Comment #130278 by The Bishop on February 20, 2008 at 8:00 am

But since you blame Einstein, I assume you feel that it was immoral to use nuclear weapons.

I don't blame Einstein. I suspect he was unaware of the consequences at the time, and in fact later regretted his action. (I'd call that repentance)

So apparently Christ's teachings about "pacifism" had no bearing on US policy at that moment. So much for a Christian nation

So much, indeed. Just because a politician gets up and makes apparently "christian" noises, doesn't mean he is one. This is the same as happened during the Crusades.

How about you? Are you going to sell all your belongings and give to the poor as Jesus commanded (I actually like this one)?

I already have.

16. Why Darwin matters

Comment #130268 by The Bishop on February 20, 2008 at 7:55 am

And your opinion of The Crusades is.....

ordinary people (as usual) duped (in collusion with men who had set themselves up as priests, but made sure their people were kept in ignorance) into serving their earthly masters' political ambitions.

17. Why Darwin matters

Comment #130255 by The Bishop on February 20, 2008 at 7:46 am

theists in the government made the decision to weaponize it, priests blessed it,

...and all the atheists tried to stop it?

"Einstein's greatest role in the invention of the atomic bomb was signing a letter to President Franklin Roosevelt urging that the bomb be built."

18. Why Darwin matters

Comment #130249 by The Bishop on February 20, 2008 at 7:43 am

That it was suggesting that science is somehow evil or wrong for inventing nuclear weapons

...and you think that was perfectly okay?

19. Why Darwin matters

Comment #130234 by The Bishop on February 20, 2008 at 7:30 am

The Lord of the Rings is a much more coherent work of fiction than the Bible.

Well, of course it is! It was written by one person.

20. Why Darwin matters

Comment #130232 by The Bishop on February 20, 2008 at 7:28 am

You quoted Hebrews - NT. So it clearly contradicts OT.

Indeed.

Here is an OT quote.

Psalm 51

You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;
you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.

17 The sacrifices of God are [c] a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart,
O God, you will not despise.

21. Why Darwin matters

Comment #130225 by The Bishop on February 20, 2008 at 7:24 am

thought the bible was the word of your god?

On what basis do you make this assertion?

I'm sure you would be among the first to claim that the Bible contradicts itself.

22. Why Darwin matters

Comment #130224 by The Bishop on February 20, 2008 at 7:21 am

And for your information, it would be my educated guess that most atheists (like myself) are against nuclear proliferation, and against the use of nuclear weapons.

I should hope so.

Any thoughts on your outrageous comment on Nuclear Weapons?

What was outrageous about it?

23. Why Darwin matters

Comment #130215 by The Bishop on February 20, 2008 at 7:17 am

God likes the smell of burning flesh, he likes to see blood -

No, he doesn't.

"First he said, "Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them""

Hichens is not wrong here. Many Christians would agree with him.

So have fun living according to Leviticus : already done your bird and lamb sacrifice today ?

Don't you understand. God had to lead his people away from their own pre-conceived ideas of sacrifice.

" 'Do not give any of your children to be sacrificed to Molech, for you must not profane the name of your God. I am the LORD.

27. Why Darwin matters

Comment #130186 by The Bishop on February 20, 2008 at 6:57 am

In this global nuclear world, we've got to get a grip on our instinctive in-group/out-group habits before we do ourselves in.

Well, it was scientists who invented nuclear weapons. I guess you atheists are working on saving the world from them.

As Jesus said, "Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. "

28. Why Darwin matters

If you can't, then I consider myself equally justified to quote the wise words of Elrond - from Lord of the Rings - back at you with equal authority.

Please do. Let's see if they make any sense.

29. Why Darwin matters

Comment #130176 by The Bishop on February 20, 2008 at 6:50 am

I am mocking you for your ignorance of basic biblical study

Well, I take it that you are mostly ex-christians of one sort or another who have decided to find all the bits of the Bible which make you unhappy.....and on that basis reject God.

Some of the teachings of the Bible do not suit the lifestyles that you wish to pursue, so it is inconvenient. Finding Dawkins teachings on evolution and high improbability of the existence of God fit neatly into how you want to think and live.

Surely, that is your choice.

30. Why Darwin matters

You can't cry foul, or rather "misinterpretation" since it's so entirely obvious. It takes a masterpiece of selective interpretation and/or repression to deny that.

Well, someone has done a lot of work.....but don't take each individual text out of context!

For example, the reference to Jesus and the Law....if you read carefully you will see that Jesus's standards are even higher than the Law's

Quoting from the bible isn't going to do any good

Why ever not? Well, I guess the quote I gave earlier says it all. Unbelievers are blinded by their modern gods. They cannot see past what satisfies their bodies.

35. Why Darwin matters

Comment #130146 by The Bishop on February 20, 2008 at 6:25 am

I've read the bible, have you read anything on evolution

The Bible is the foremost authority on evolution.

Genesis 1 gives a good description of how it all came about....just without all the detail that modern scientist are uncovering.

36. Why Darwin matters

Comment #130138 by The Bishop on February 20, 2008 at 6:13 am

Why do you think I'm an atheist?

The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

4.How come a reptile's legs turn into wings gradually

Don't you understand that birds evolved from Tyrannosaurus Rex?! It walked on its hind legs and its short front legs developed feathers to help keep it warm, and then it discovered it could fly. Obvious really!

In fact there is a prophecy in the OT which says that humans will be able to fly one day.

but those who hope in the LORD
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;

40. Hitchens and Boteach Debate on God

Comment #130085 by The Bishop on February 20, 2008 at 3:40 am

Er, why? What exactly do you think it will achieve? Are you just praying vague

Matthew 5:43-48
Love for Enemies

43"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' 44But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

46If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Comment #129622 by The Bishop on February 19, 2008 at 11:42 am

OH MY GOD! I AM SO SICK, SOMEONE IS PRAYING FOR ME!

Which is hardly conducive to good health.

Perhaps hospitals need warning signs (like on cigarette packets):

MENTION OF PRAYER CAN BE SERIOUSLY HARMFUL TO HEALTH

I am praying for you all.
