1. The religiosity test: Doubters need not apply

Comment #107010 by sillysighbean on January 3, 2008 at 9:51 pm

Mitt Romney was crushed in the Iowa caucuses. Cheer up everyone.
The Evangelicals put in Hucklebee, but his act will not fly next week in New Hampshire. Obama has the mojo and sent a clear message to the Clintons (Hillary finishing 3rd to Edwards). Obama will be the next president of the United States, so do not despair our friends across the pond.

Reading this man is a humbling experience, I feel like a five year old trying to comprehend an algebra lesson. I appreciate his lectures, he does not talk down to you, and presents concepts that normal people like me can understand, but he really soars in this article. I am just smart enough to know that he is a genius.

Big John..Why do we just take it one step further and make laws based on the teachings of the Old Testament. i.e. Take all those rebelious and full of sloth teenagers and stone them to death. Why restrict it to just two birds with one stone.

I enjoy reading Mr. Hitchens, his caustic, incisive wit must really make the zealots gnash their teeth. "Smirking Hick"...it has such a nice ring to it.

Josh, You did a great job with the video..it sounds terrific, clear and immediate. Also, your cutting technique keeps it moving at a comfortable pace that aids in holding interest.

D.J. Grothe has a podcast on iTunes, he has terrific guests on a regular basis. It is worthwhile to check out.

9. URGENT APPEAL: Please Help Protect Ayaan Hirsi Ali

Comment #89136 by sillysighbean on November 19, 2007 at 8:14 pm

This thread brought back that feeling from my 8th grade religion class. i.e. feeling admonished for asking questions. I have been reading both sides of the atheist argument for about a year now and this is the first time I don't feel the love from the atheist side.

Maybe a portion of the money that these atheist authors earned from all the books I bought could go towards protecting their friends, I would even buy another book to support the cause. These authors made millions this year. I wonder how much money Bertrand Russel made on his book "Science and Religion"?

11. Debate between Christopher Hitchens and Alister McGrath

Comment #79572 by sillysighbean on October 17, 2007 at 7:11 pm

I really try and listen to both sides of the argument with an open mind. I find Hitchens to be clear, concise, genuine, and funny while nodding my head in agreement to just about all that he is saying to the audience. When McGrath speaks I feel that my head is ready to do a 360 ala Linda Blair. I do not know what he is talking about, it is gibberish to me and I do not get the feeling that he actually believes everything he professes. I award Christopher Hitchens the winner of the debate.

12. Religion as a Force for Good

Comment #74632 by sillysighbean on September 29, 2007 at 6:32 pm

The one driving point that had a significant impact on my thinking from reading the God Delusion was this: Just because religous people do good things, it does not make what they believe true.

13. A Table for One

Comment #72759 by sillysighbean on September 22, 2007 at 6:02 pm

Colbert asked a very good question: "Why be good if there is no promise of a heavenly reward or eternal punishment?" You would think the priest would have the answer to a very familar question right at his finger tips and he dodged it to gobble up time and the interview ended.

14. God Talk on 'The View'

Comment #71640 by sillysighbean on September 19, 2007 at 11:51 am

According to Whoopie, the universe is one vast cosmic booger. After watching this video, I decided to take a vow of silence because I fear that if I start to talk, I may sound as stupid as this panel...What is the "Internets"?...lol

15. Do you have to read up on leprechology before disbelieving in them?

Comment #71009 by sillysighbean on September 17, 2007 at 1:00 pm

I wonder if Stanford and Cornwell are as critical of Christians who believe despite not having read books by the major theologians, ie 99.99% of them

Excellent point!

There was a quote from Monty Python's 'Life of Brian' that sums this up: "He's just making it up as he goes along!"

Accusing RIchard Dawkins of being "negative", is like saying the weatherman is negative because there is a 90% chance of rain for your picnic. Both are merely telling the truth. Sorry if the truth rains on your delusion.

19. I Don't Believe in Atheists

Comment #44421 by sillysighbean on May 24, 2007 at 4:14 pm

Why is it that I am able to read articles by Dawkins, Harris, Hitchens and Dennent with no difficulty, while reading articles such as this is like trudging through mud? I am truly trying to understand both sides of the argument. Well, Dennent's 'Consciousness Explained' was a tough read for me, I am going through it again, but that is only because I know I am not that smart. I do not get the feeling he is trying to bamboozle me, like some of these other authors.

20. Pundit Christopher Hitchens picks a fight in book, 'God is Not Great'

Comment #35995 by sillysighbean on April 29, 2007 at 7:50 pm

Reading the books of Dawkins, Harris and Russell this past year has changed MY mind. Looking forward to this one.
Also, thank you to all who took the time and effort to post links, I read most of them and watch ALL the movies. Keep up the good work.
