1. Religion vs science: can the divide between God and rationality be reconciled?
Comment #263569 by JeremyH on October 11, 2008 at 6:29 pm
Science's goal is to find out how things work.
Religion's goal is to convert people.
Religion has the upper hand in this debate, because it has EVOLVED to thrive in this exact environment. We don't have that luxury. We can't change our mind when an idea gets a bad reception, we have to trust the evidence. Religion can mutate to whatever form is most pleasing to the public.
Comment #263412 by JeremyH on October 10, 2008 at 8:49 pm
Darn, one of those articles that use a hot topic word like "Georgia" to get people to read it and it turns out to be something that, while still interesting, has nothing to do with current events.
It's just like that film "Osama". It had nothing to do with Bin Laden!
But about this article, I think our current laws and punishments are too heavily based on this instinct for revenge. Why is it that two drunk drivers are sent to court, one gets his lisence revoked and the other is put in prison for years? Because the second guy, by pure chance, happened to hit a car, killing the driver. So you're not punishing the behaviour, you're punishing the outcome.

If our best survival strategy is simply to pretend to co-operate, rather than actually to do so, why should we have created and then embraced religions that required us to "walk the talk"?
What I got from the article is that the creators of religion are able to make people be altruistic while they themselves simply reap the rewards.
"Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful."
4. The world according to Hitchens
Comment #255503 by JeremyH on September 27, 2008 at 8:12 pm
For once I disagree with Hitchens. Russia is and has always been exagerated by American media. Ossetia DEMOCRATICALLY decided to join Russia, and Georgia, backed by the U.S, attacked the Ossetians, and Russia's attempts to protect the Ossetians were twisted by the media to make it look like it was the Russians who attacked.
Of course Russia tried to explain this, but who would have an American news story saying the Russians weren't the bad guys? Russia has been demonised so that the U.S can do whatever they want and the Americans people wont ask questions.
ryouga: You're right, Hitchens has taken the reporting at face value, one of the downsides of his patriotic attitude. It's hard to come to grips with the fact that your "objective news media" can be lying through it's teeth.

I don't think the wet towel worked buddy. You've misinterpreted both Dawkins' and Eber's work. They're both totally compatible, and you haven't discovered anything groundbreaking.
The environment can change a cell in your body through things like ultra-violet radiation, but it can't change your genetic make up as a whole, unless an ultra-violet ray struck the exact same place in the DNA of every single one of the trillions of cells in your body. In which case you'd probably die.
MS may be caused by these mutations happening in a single cell, which then goes on to replicate, but that sounds to me like cancer.

Whether Spore is pro-evolution or pro-ID, that that wont change people's beliefs. World of Warcraft has magic in it. That doesn't make me believe in magic.
What a meaningless article. The only interesting part was when it said Will Wright donated money to the republicans, and supports McCain. That makes me wonder whether he's quite as smart as I once thought...

That was a brilliantly written article. Another poorly written anti-evolution book.
I was in the book store the other day and came across another anti-atheist book, I don't know if it's been mentioned on this site yet.

You are 100% right. I moved to Auckland to study at the beginning of this year, and I'm so fed up with it I've decided to move to Hamilton and study Biology there. Auckland is dirty, grimy, dangerous (3 stabbings and a shooting in the last couple of months, as compared to nothing anywhere else in NZ) and EXPENSIVE.

Comment #236683 by JeremyH on August 25, 2008 at 4:39 am
I really enjoyed this article. The kind of teachers a child has is the most important part of a his/her upbringing.
A good teacher explains what happens.
A great teacher explains HOW it happens.
An excellent teacher gives you the skills to properly assess the given information, so that you can figure out how it happens by yourself.
It's hard to be an 'excellent' teacher by the standards above, and sometimes it's impossible, depending on the situation. Mr Campbell seems to be a 'great' teacher, and given the kind of students he had to work with, you can't expect much more.
I'm just grateful that all through my school years I had a good share of 'excellent' teachers who helped me become the free-thinking individual that I am.

I think Obama has one of the best plans ever to win Presidency.
He's black, but he acts white.
He's an atheist*, but he acts Christian.
He wins, no matter what!
*He was raised by non-religious parents, and said himself that he only joined the black church because of it's ability to "spur change". I'm pretty sure he's about as atheist as they come, but by joining a church he's doing exactly what he needs to do to become President.

"Here is keen insight that any believer can use to understand and challenge the new atheists."
When debating god with an athiest, follow these steps to ensure victory
Step one: When the atheist begins to speak, place index fingers firmly inside ears.
Step two: sing "Heaven" by the band Live very loudly, as to avoid hearing unwanted facts and logic.
Step three: when the atheist has given up hope, use circular logic and flawed mathematics to justify your belief in god (e.g. "god wrote the bible, and the bible says God exists, QED god exists, i mean, God wouldn't lie would He?).
Step four: Stalin, Hitler, Maou etc etc, *smug look of arrogance*
Final step: Tell the atheist that you are praying for them, and that one day they will see the truth.
This is easy, maybe I should start writing fleas!

Comment #221680 by JeremyH on July 30, 2008 at 1:52 am
"Worth contemplating.
Or not. "
It is worth contemplating, and I contemplate that you're missing the point.
Obama COULD come out and say "ok ok, you got me, I'm actually an athiest" (because let's face it. He is. Probably. I mean, if he isn't, then he's terribly bad at being a Christian).
But you know what would happen if he did that? McCain would rule the United States! GEORGE BUSH'S CLONE would be sitting in the big chair! after all those years of that scoundrel of a man driving the U.S into the dust, we would have to put up with someone EVEN WORSE!
One thing you have to realise is that this is politics. We have come to expect our politicians to lie. If the atheists stay honest then we'll lag behind. It's like entering a body building competition without steroids. You just will not win.
Obama needs our support. He is an intelligent, cunning secularist(probably) who isn't just the lesser of two evils, he might actually improve the U.S. He has swallowed his pride and lunged into the realm of religious idiocracy against his own beliefs(probably) so that most powerful Country in the world isn't run by stupid fundamentalists. Of course he might actually be Christian, but that doesn't change the fact that he's a hell of alot better than McCain!
Oh and about the article.... um... charity doesn't need religion... what a stupid idea that religious group should get special treatment et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
Doesn't mind me really as long as the charities are going to real causes. If your imaginary friend tells you to commit your life to helping others, then fine, take all the government funding you need ya crazed lunatic.

Comment #221661 by JeremyH on July 30, 2008 at 1:23 am
I wouldn't dismiss this study immediately just because in some vague unintentional indirect not-really-but-kinda way it supports religion. It simply says that religion seperates groups of people, making it harder for disease to spread. Pretty straightforward, and it makes sense.
Of course no one in their right mind would suggest this as a reason to be religious! Besides, I'm certain that you could find a positive correlation between countries with more religions and countries who have had more civil wars.
One last point: this was an observational study, finding only correlations. Correlations are NOT evidence of causation. There is an inverse correlation between the number of pirates and the global temperature. This does not mean a lack of pirates caused global warming.

Wow... this thing stinks of hypocrisy. Whenever I have read forums, on here or youtube or anywhere else, or when I have seen debates between atheists and christians/jews ec, in almost EVERY instance it has been cool, collected atheists making their point clearly, and hotheaded religious people ranting on with wild, unjustified accusations, ignoring the evidence given by their oppenents etc. One obvious example is Shmuley boteach, another is that Clearmind fellow from this very site. Sure, there are some atheists who can get a bit loud and rant on, but these are rare events.
Clearthinker:
"I could manage to predict that this article would be swamped by evangelical atheists shouting and interrupting.?? Because it happens with everyone who dares to question the Faith... "
Interrupting? It's called participating in a debate. What, you think we shouldn't post on this article? We should have left the comments section blank and not voice our opinions?
DARES to question the faith? Dare to question a way of thinking that allows belief that is contradictary to the evidence? How dare we!
Maybe we voice our opinion about faith so often because it is so remarkably destructive and illogical.
Seriously, if you can't see the hypocrisy of your own words, then you are lost, buddy.

Comment #210701 by JeremyH on July 15, 2008 at 2:02 am
Clearmind.
Every single fossil ever found has fit perfectly geologically and temporally into the theory of evolution. Genetics has proven our kinship with other apes. Evolution has been reproduced in laboratories, and every prediction made by the theory has been shown to be true.
Regardless of your moral quandaries with the idea, or any supposed 'gap' in the evidence (which does nothing except to show what we already know- that we don't yet know EVERYTHING), evolution is a fact. Cold hard fact. This is not faith talking, this is evidence, and the fortitude of years of scientific study, ALL of it fully supporting the FACT that the diversity of the species on earth evolved from a common ancestor. I don't think I can stress enough just how much evidence there is for evolution. Even if you deny the theory (as in the processes that cause evolution), the act of evolution itself is an undeniable fact. We clear, Clearmind?
"If there is an art, then, there is an artist. If you tell me a simple Monalisa has a maker but a real alive human being does not have a maker, then I and rest of the believers will oppose this. "
Would God not be the greatest work of art ever created? Then who painted the wonder that is YahWeh? Your argument is flawed, however I doubt you will ever see that. Your argument has no evidence, and the only proofs that require no evidence are mathematical proofs. Unfortunately for you, the reason they don't need evidence is because make no assumptions. You have made wild assumptions such as "humans are works of art" and "art must be made by a living artist". Oh and let's not forget the other assumption: "evolution is wrong"!
I really hope one day that you actually listen to others and really think about what it is you believe, and refuse to believe.

Religious references are fun though :P, and I wasn't entirely serious, It was a hyperbole of how scientists had something they couldn't explain so they made something up! Mind you I made that post with outdated knowledge on how much scientists knew about dark matter, and at the time I got that information it seemed illogical to proclaim that there is something called dark matter when the evidence was no-where near sufficient.
The only evidence I HAD seen for dark matter was the apparent presence of more mass in the universe than calculated, and to me that sounded like not much of a reason to just 'make up' a new matter. There were so many possibilities of miscalculation, like the example I gave in the first post about time variance. I hadn't realized the progress that has been made however, and it seems scientists have come up with more substantial evidence.
"Or this one:

I think it's an overstatement when people say this planet is on a knifes edge, with bacteria like this surviving in such harsh conditions, I don't see why life couldn't survive on other planets. The only reason we see earth as more inhabitable for life is because the only life we know, including us, evolved on this planet.

Ha! Dark matter, the most ridiculous thing I've heard since I last spoke to a creationist. Dark matter is indeed the god of astrophysicists. There was something that they couldn't explain (differences between the acceleration of the universe and their own calculations of how fast it should accelerate) and they made a 'matter of the gaps'- an invisible thing that fixes all your miscalculations! There was a story in the Herald (New Zealand national Newspaper) about a story of a Kiwi scientist who took on the whole dark matter thing by simply applying the fact that time varies through space. All the calculations which led to the idea of dark matter were based an an incorrect assumption that time is constant throughout the universe, and he claimed that if you take into account the variance of time due to large astrological bodies (stars etc), then there is no disagreement between calculation and observation. He may be wrong, I can't say for sure, but I'm certainly not going to believe in dark matter until I see some real evidence. This article hints at evidence, but heated matter in space isn't sufficient evidence for me. Right now dark matter sounds about as silly as the string theory (pseudoscientific garbage!)

God:
"Well child, what do you have to say for yourslelf? I let you live for 12 years before giving you AIDS, and you never even tried to find Jesus!"
Poverty stricken African child:
"Sorry Lord, but I guess I was too busy carrying buckets of clean water 3 miles everyday from the well to my house so my brothers and sisters can drink. My parents used to do that for us but you killed them off last year. Maybe if you showed yourself in person I might have found jesus in time, but it seems the only way to get into heaven is to be stupid enough to believe the cults of personality that preach at 6am on free-to-air television. Yes God, I totally deserve to suffer an eternity of torture. I was the one who failed to believe in the God that brought me into a world of poverty, killed off my parents and gave me AIDS at the age of twelve. I'M the evil one. I'M the one who deserves to go to hell. Fuck you God, at least Hell will have decent fucking music, none of this Creed bullshit."

Is anybody else BEWILDERED in the fact that in this day and age, when we can see into the depths of the infinitely small and out into the expanse of the infinitely massive, when we can understand things which lay beyond the scope of our imagination, like an ant knowing how big a mountain is, and yet we still have to debate whether there is a magical, invisible fairy in the sky watching everything we do?
^That, by the way, was only one sentance!
There is a seperatism in this country, between the learned and the deluded. It is our responsibility to feed these poor souls the knowledge the desperately need.

There needs to be some strict rules on what programs claiming to be 'documentaries' use as 'evidence'. The uneducated and gullable sit watching the cancer-tube and actually believe this shit. The same goes for advertisements. There was an ad on TV here in New Zealand showing a 'dramatization' of a spray used to treat colds actually entering the nose and KILLING THE COLD VIRUS. What, they found every single antigen for every single mutated form of the cold virus and pumped them all into a bottle of spray for the low price of $8.95? I highly doubt that.
