2. France rejects Muslim woman over radical practice of Islam

Comment #209553 by Tenochtitlan on July 12, 2008 at 3:19 pm

Holy shit, I don't get it, France is basically kicking her out to Morocco? How is this supposed to help her leave her idiotic religious beliefs? And what was she doing that in any way threatened France or reduced her qualifications for citizenship? I mean, it's not as if there are no French citizens that are complete idiots when it comes to voting, or that at least some women in France sadly do live in complete submission to their husband. The woman speaks good French and has kids for Pete's sake!

Sad, I'd have thought that living in a liberal, secular democracy would have been the best shot at at least moderating her craziness, but it's not to be I guess.

3. Breaking the Silence

Some months ago I saw a video of what, at the time, I thought was a random muslim woman arguing some pretty suicidal arguments about Islam. It's good to finally get the whole story, not to mention her name.

My only thought is, will we need to open a "protect Wafa Sultan fund" soon?

4. Faith no more as World Youth Day fans flames of disbelief

Comment #190013 by Tenochtitlan on June 8, 2008 at 6:50 am

Someone's right to believe in something does not make them immune to criticism or "offensive remarks". In fact, I think it is the cusp of idiocy to be offended by something. Are atheists offended by the hordes of believers likening us to devils? No, we know they have a right to believe in whatever nonsense they want to, and so do we.

So believers are able to cry "they're offending us!" at every single opportunity and suddenly we get a pang of guilt? Bullshit. This guy is doing his kids a disservice by trying to have his kids respect religion.

5. Karma comedians

Karma is horrible, this article absolutely nails it. It's all fun-and-games when you're just trying to be nice, until someone points at a random blind (or in any way harmed or disabled) person and proclaims that he somehow deserved what he got. It's perverse and it's wrong.

7. Town moves against Islamic school

@Granton: agree, this has nothing to do with religion, and everything to do with racism and xenophobia.
Its weird, these people don't have anything against religion per se, (at least not christianity) and I know Australia is filled with immigrants, but I guess Islam and muslims are just a little too much for this little community.

Also, I like how they all go "I'm not being racist, but these folk shouldn't be allowed to build a school there, I mean, just look at them, they're all, like, different from us!"

Yes, racist idiocy is not gone, it's just well-hidden.

8. The Faith of Flanders

Comment #184271 by Tenochtitlan on May 24, 2008 at 9:03 am

The fact that Flanders is even there, on the show, being preternaturally good and honest, is, to me, sad, pathetic, and prejudiced. Its like the show promotes the belief that intensely religious people are all good and kind-hearted, while the religiously irreverent cheat, and lie and treat their kids as garbage.

I even remember an interview with Matt Groening himself where he said he wanted to make fun of creationism while still being "respectful" to Flanders beliefs. I don't know about you, but that sounds like a big religious bias and some fairly deep misconceptions about where morality comes from and what your average evangelical is really like. Personally, I think Flanders is by far the low-point of the show precisely because he's shown as what the "ideal" evangelist is like, when the reality is that they are a bunch of...well, based on previous headlines, insert adjectives of choice there.

9. Kenya mob reportedly burns 11 'witches'

What depresses me most is the possible decades that will have to elapse for this type of behaviour to stop. There's just no way to prevent this type of behaviour but by radically changing the environment that these people live in, and that would mean stuff like economic development and connectivity, which in Africa may be a long, long, long way off.
