from the mercy ministries website:

"Do you have to be a Christian / religious / go to church to come to Mercy Ministries?
No. Any young woman regardless of her religious or spiritual background is welcome to apply to our program.
As our program is based on Christian principles the young women in the program are involved in a local church and attend other Christian based activities during the week. When living at Mercy Ministries young women are required to participate in all aspects of the program."

i think special attention needs to be paid to that last sentence. sounds to me like: "you don't have to be christian to come here, but we're damn sure going to do whatever we can to convert you".

sorry for the post-a-thon...last one for a while, i promise! ;)

but i really do get annoyed at this tired old chestnut repeatedly being rolled out by tony snow and his ilk:

Atheism...spawned history's most savage movements from the French Terror to the Stalinist purges.

atheism had literally nothing to do with the french terror and i challenge anyone to show me a reputable history book saying otherwise. as for stalin: any semi-reasonable person knows that his brutish regime and the subsequent purges were more a result of his own paranoid delusion and his dogmatic adherence to communism (in other words, his politcs) than his supposed atheism. here is what karl marx had to say about atheism:
"Atheism as a denial of this unreality; has no longer any meaning, for atheism is a denial of God and tries to assert through this negation the existence of man; but socialism as such no longer needs this mediation..."
suck on that, tony.

I think it's important to make the distinction between "believing" in evolution and "accepting" evolution. You either accept or reject it. Eugenie Scott spoke at my university last year and stressed this issue. It's very important for us to use this type of language. When the believer hears the word "belief," they immediately place you on the same playing field as themselves.

i'm so glad someone brought up this very important point. it brings to mind an incident i had with a righteous reprobate several years back. i was working in a factory that was crawling with the "born again" and i found myself constantly butting heads with them. on one occasion this person asked me if i "believe" in the theory of evolution. i said no. he then asked if i believe in the bible's story of creation. "definitely not" i said. "so how do you think we all got here?" i responded by saying that i thought the theories of the big bang and evolution made the most sense to me. "ah, but i thought you said you didn't believe in the theory of evolution!" he said this with no small amount of smugness as if he'd just caught me out. "that's exactly what i said. you asked if i 'believe' in evolution. it's an incredibly flawed question. belief implies faith. i don't need faith to tell me that the theory of evolution, with all the hard evidence we have there-of, makes far more sense than the bible's story of creation. do you have faith that two plus two equals four, or do you just accept that it does based on your mathematical reasoning?" oh, the sputtering and head spinning that ensued! he had nothing left but to resort to "jesus saves this" and "the blood of christ that" which indicated to me that the debate was well and truly over...
