1. Saudi Marriage Officiant : 'It Is Allowed To Marry A Girl At The Age Of One'.

Comment #198742 by Geodesic17 on June 24, 2008 at 12:21 pm

Only 1-year-old? Heck? Why not from the moment of birth? Or why not promise to have daughters to be married off when they are born? Why not marry a fetus? Why stop at 1 year?

2. Should Strident British Atheist Richard Dawkins Dictate Education Policy to US States? Barbara Forrest Apparently Thinks So

When I occassionally encounter people who criticize this site, they fail to realize that it started out as a fan site where people with similiiar interests such as reading Richard Dawkins' books come to share ideas. Am I wrong about this?

3. Godless

Comment #192333 by Geodesic17 on June 12, 2008 at 7:38 pm

On the contrary, people in the medical field do this very expertly. A friend of mine, who is a surgeon is very able to critically analyze study data and information pertaining to science but when it comes to religion, he just believes. That's it, he just believes. It is called compartmentalization. And many other doctors think this way. They do not question their religious beliefs and are able to keep those beliefs neatly away from science. They do this because the religious beliefs are never analyzed.

Well, we wouldn't want these people not believing that they are god's gift to the world, would we?

So PZ Myers gave an interesting talk about the human eye at the dinner mentioned at the bottom of the article. Afterwards, he pledged his allegeance to the squidlike Cthulu (not really).

Intelligent Design - A religion friendly theory that describes human origins in a fantasy world.

Evolution - A science friendly theory that describes human origins in reality.

I just saw Carl Zimmer talk about this at the Seattle Town Hall last night. Coincidently, PZ Myers was in the audience. Security must not have spottted him.

If CDesign Proponentsists believe in free speech, the Discovery Institute should open its press releases to be commented on through its site. For people who claim to be squelched, they certainly do a good job of trying to silence others.

Comment #185834 by Geodesic17 on May 28, 2008 at 6:32 pm

Funny thing about the name calling, I attended an embarrassing Intelligent Design vs Evolution Debate while an undergaduate. The ID side was represented by some obscure upstart named Bryan O'Neal, ABD (still working on a PHD in Philosophy and Design Theory, as I understand it). Anyhow, he took a few cheap shots at Dawkins even though the man wasn't even there. If he was in a crowd of ID Proponents, he might of gotten a few slaps on the back. The funny thing is, very few people that the school probably heard of Richard Dawkins at the time. Maybe I'm giving them too much credit by thinking that it is an attempt to discredit the man before people even hear his name.

19. 1968 Supreme Court case of Epperson v. Arkansas

Comment #185802 by Geodesic17 on May 28, 2008 at 3:37 pm

I present the following argument from authority:

"How you believe doesn't affect the doctrine. Either at a certain moment in evolution God breathed into one particular ape-man who was Adam, or God could have taken a handful of dust and blowed and created a man just like that" - Billy Graham ("Cooperative Evangelism at Harringay," United Church Observer, July 1966).

20. Richard Dawkins and Bill Maher

I've been a fan of Bill Maher for some time now. It would be cool to see Richard Dawkins as a panelist on his show.

29. Pelosi, Reid shunning Ten Commandments?

Comment #181285 by Geodesic17 on May 16, 2008 at 8:47 pm

If these people ever get their way, I bet they will find out it is more than they bargained for. It would be a huge disaster. How can they be so ignorant of history? I don't understand how a person could be so dense and deluded.

Also, are they trying to bribe and please God by this stunt? How do they intend to enforce the 10 Commandments? Have they thought that far ahead or are they just trying to promote the rapture?

There are some that perpetuate a stereotype of atheists. It helps with converting people to their cause.

Why reverse the polarity when you can shift it by 90 degrees in the direction of the red shift within the flux capacitor?

Solarium,

That is a good question. I don't know. Either they had the picture and just started looking at it, or they "just discovered that it is the oldest". The language used here should be cleared up.

38. Youngest galactic supernova (not aliens) found

Comment #180271 by Geodesic17 on May 14, 2008 at 1:02 pm

Evolver23,

I don't know. But if you read the article, they couldn't date the event without a second photo to calculate the rate of change in the distribution of gas.

39. Youngest galactic supernova (not aliens) found

Comment #180264 by Geodesic17 on May 14, 2008 at 12:55 pm

Like RevJimBob said, but rephrased, just add the number of light years to the estimated time of the event. The phrasing is a matter of perspective. From our perspective, it happened (became visable) about 150 years ago.

They didn't "just discover it". They just calculated the expansion from the center based off the distance the gas has traveled from the center in 23 years.

40. Americans pray at the pump for cheaper petrol

Comment #180228 by Geodesic17 on May 14, 2008 at 12:05 pm

Plus, there won't be any jobs and the atmosphere is going to be like it is in China, except everywhere in the world. Plus the rising sea levels are going to drown major coastal cities like NYC and London. Disease, war, starvation, pollution, terrorism, disasters are all standing around the corner waiting to strike.

But still we go our merry way, get up in the morning and go to work. What can you do about it? I guess, we shouldn't worry too much about it... sort of like death, it's inevitable.

But Jesus is coming back, so this is all a good thing, right?

42. Vatican: It's OK to believe in aliens

Comment #179814 by Geodesic17 on May 13, 2008 at 8:02 pm

Hypothetically, we could find life on a moon of Saturn or Jupiter. The Catholics will be prepared to accept evidence of life on other planets or moons. The Creationists will probably follow the flat earthers and claim it is a hoax.

It is also true that you cannot put Jesus or the Holy Trinity into a particle accelerator, for various reasons, of course.

43. Richard Dawkins discusses Einstein's new letters

Comment #179812 by Geodesic17 on May 13, 2008 at 7:59 pm

I've thought it before, and I've seen it written elsewhere, but I'll say it here: Ben Stein is no Einstein.

It is unfortunate that some people see a quote about god and automatically assume that it is about their own god. Thoughts?

It is ironic how creationists often mock their own beliefs.

"The eye just magically forming? HA!"
