Talking about the Vatican:

an italian man (Gabriele Paolini) has been sentenced to five months (5!) in jail for calling Pope John Paul II "gay".

Believe it or not (the news is of yesterday 12^ may 2008) "gay" in italy is still a terrible offence, and if you say it about a religious figure (such as Pope Carol Woytyla) you go to jail for up to two years (catholic theocracy?).

There are mafiosi that don't do even a week of jail in Italy, after they have ordered the assassination of other mafiosi, but if you dare to say that the Pope is a homosexual man... you will spend 22 weeks in prison. Good for Peter Tatchell, human rights activist, because he called this Pope Benedict XVI: "Queen of homophobia" (but in a real democracy, britain, where you wouldn't go to prison just for that)

I have to say that Italy "shoud be" a secular state with no state religion (this is the italian constitution) but italians (iRanians??) don't care, the pope is untouchable... bit like the mafia... or islam in Iran...

I totally agree... but these mustn't be just words. we have to change this world now. We need action, we need coming out there and doing something. We Atheist are sometimes arrogant becose we say we're better or superior so we shouldn't act like theists. WRONG! We must form our society ang get stronger, have our circles, buildings and even our leaders. Like we are right now, we're simply nothing full of arrogance. Superiority is for God. ...so we leave the tumor... it will just grow more and more. It freaks me out to think that in less than half a century europe will be more islamic than secular. I'm bored of people who are cowards, who preach hate and then say they can do it becose it's religious freedom. But if you accuse them, you're being offensive, and sometimes you even get punished! I don't think religious people really care... they will continue because they need religion. They need god just as children need Santa. They don't care if Santa has a red and white dress or if he has white or blond hair, they're waiting for the presents. If you tell them that Santa does not exists, they will be a bit disappointed for a while, but they will still expect presents for the 25th of december.

More or less it's the same thing, make god obsolete or not... people will want their presents: eternal life, love, happiness and so on. And if they won't get those things from god, they will look for those things somewhere else. Astrology... cards... empty coffee cups... a new religion... just anything.

After all... we're talking about children or childish adults... (not that different)
