1. Aliens need Christ's redemption, too

Comment #201345 by Rawhard Dickins on June 29, 2008 at 3:33 pm

Radesq

Thanks for the comments.

In what way do I miss at least one good valid point?

..He (Funes) said that aliens, like humans, would be able to benefit from the redemption offered by Jesus Christ and "the mercy of God".

So, Catholic christian ideas should apply to the rest of the universe?

It beggers belief.

Those middle eastern myths never had any significance on earth, never mind the universe.

These catholics are on another planet!

Yes I know what the problems are, there is a long way to go, I was quite enchanted by religion when I was about 9.
Most believers do so because they want to even if they can see evidence that goes against it.

Have to go now

Comment #195506 by Rawhard Dickins on June 18, 2008 at 11:11 am

So why did it take this guy so long to work through some pretty simple logic?

McGraths book was indeed bloody awful. He wraps a simple idea in his peculiar verbal diarrhea, whether spoken or in print, Hitchens and Dawkins cut through this crap like a knife!

"The existence of evil was also something that bothered Elgarøy" ... come on - this is kids stuff!!

5. Intelligent people 'less likely to believe in God'

Comment #192201 by Rawhard Dickins on June 12, 2008 at 2:39 pm

The more "intelligent" you are, the more likely you are to have a well thought out word view. (Which is unlikely to include a bearded old man that waves a magic wand or whatever).

It's not rocket science that poorly educated people tend to be more religious!

Nova,

Exactly my thoughts after I left my computer a few hours ago.

Of course they're not likely to be viable outside the womb.

OK I think I've vented my spleen sufficiently over this one, I'm just one who thinks it should be a lot lower but I'm not one to attach any great importance to cell clusters.

Edit: I think at 24 weeks the foetus should be given a chance.

I am very aware of the logical extension, that's why I joked "every dandruff is sacred" in my earlier comment.

There is a grey area though, between sperm and an unborn child that surely has to have similar respect as say, a dying, demented, infirm person in old age.

I'd rather see contraception pushed to the point of causing the furore that abortion does and provide more help with adoption.

Perhaps nature is already taking action by reducing sperm counts as population increases.

Comment #183345 by Rawhard Dickins on May 21, 2008 at 11:41 pm

How we treat the unborn has to be an extension of how we treat each other or how we treat the elderly or mentally infirm.

Perhaps the unborn deserve even higher respect because of their potential.

12. Teenager faces prosecution for calling Scientology 'cult'

Comment #183341 by Rawhard Dickins on May 21, 2008 at 11:19 pm

The Church of Scientology are the real criminals - guilty of indoctrinating young minds with loopy ideas.

What an excellent young man!

Comment #183125 by Rawhard Dickins on May 21, 2008 at 12:25 pm

OK, so there's a really steep curve between what is acceptable and what is not and there needs to be more contraception available.

I'd rather see contraception enforced than encourage late terminations.

Comment #183112 by Rawhard Dickins on May 21, 2008 at 12:02 pm

Peacebeuponme,

There is no difference between a child/thing one hour before birth and one hour afterwards, it's still a child.

The most important thing in the world right now is contraception and education about it.

It effects everything from being the number one factor in global warming to turf wars.

Comment #183081 by Rawhard Dickins on May 21, 2008 at 11:08 am

This has to be WRONG!

How about 4 weeks except in exceptional circumstances?

I'm as atheist as anyone on this board and I'm not in the "Every dandruff is sacred" camp!

I just think there is a VERY steep curve between what we can do with cell clusters and what can acceptably be done to unborn children.

18. Brown says embryo research is key to life

Comment #181968 by Rawhard Dickins on May 19, 2008 at 12:43 am

Isn't this what retroviruses have been doing for eons?

There seems to be great opposition from some quarters to accept that humans are animals too!

19. Face to faith

Comment #181881 by Rawhard Dickins on May 18, 2008 at 3:05 pm

This is really good news and well overdue, but it's s a shame atheism has such a bad reputation that it can only be acceptable when wrapped up as Humanism.

What would it take to show youngsters that true atheism is driven by a desire to have a deep and complete understanding of the universe without all the magic-wand stuff.

Edit: The education system has failed if children leave school without these broad foundations and the consequences in this multi-cultural world could be disastrous.

Humans are 90-odd percent genetically the same as many other animals, so it's not really such a big issue.

Comment #181785 by Rawhard Dickins on May 18, 2008 at 9:02 am

The problem is that the religious don't have any standard by which to guide their lives.

For example - if it's OK to take your daughters up to a cave for a good rogering - anything goes!

Probably best to think for yourself and follow the moral zeitgeist.

*Edit* yes I'm beginning to hate "zeitgeist" too

This is going to be interesting, lets hope it goes all the way! The more publicity, the better!

Maybe the US will join the rest of the western world sometime soon, and shed its fascination with the philosophy of goat-herders.

Comment #179891 by Rawhard Dickins on May 14, 2008 at 12:29 am

There are those who think that the brains complexity does not account for the complexity of its actions.

As an evolved artifact, the brains capacity is the product of a practically unlimited timeframe of improvement.

Comment #179101 by Rawhard Dickins on May 12, 2008 at 2:44 pm

It's impossible to have a workable world view without accepting that we are part of the animal kingdom.

The religious battle with problems that evaporate when our animal nature is taken into account.

It just takes time and education and a lot more straight talking.

39. Record-setting Laser May Aid Searches for Earthlike Planets

Comment #176747 by Rawhard Dickins on May 7, 2008 at 11:57 pm

Rod

The laser generates frequencies that are compared to incoming light from stars with potential planets.
Any regular variation indicates movement due to doppler shift which may indicate an orbiting planet.
The frequency combs are the result of the very narrow pulses produced by the lasers hence the silly numbers.
Correct me if I'm wrong chaps.

40. Dumb and Dumber: A discussion between Ben Stein and Glenn Beck

Comment #176020 by Rawhard Dickins on May 6, 2008 at 11:34 am

So this sycophant thinks the film blows the lid off evolution???

Wouldn't that require stunning new evidence?

RD was quoted well out of context to suit Steins purposes, no wonder RD's annoyed!

Sacredness of human life?? don't most atheists accept this? perhaps even more broadly, "PRESERVE COMPLEXITY" I say.

41. Shaw TV Interview with Richard Dawkins

Comment #175978 by Rawhard Dickins on May 6, 2008 at 10:07 am

ASM

Skepticism is good but I don't think it is worth wasting any more key-strokes on this, as with evolution the evidence is overwhelming.

There were plenty of surviving witnesses and the photos were not pictures of shop dummies.
Perhaps you think the Nazis didn't have the mentality to do this? Perhaps they were too busy waging war against the rest of the world?

Even if it were one tenth as bad as is thought, it was bad enough to be called The Holocaust.

44. A New Jack Chick Tract: Moving On Up!

Comment #175053 by Rawhard Dickins on May 4, 2008 at 9:38 am

It's amazing how Jack Chick goes to the trouble of making entire films to criticise Mormons, The Qur'an and Johovahs without seeing any fault at all within Christianity.
