1. Ministers to Defy I.R.S. by Endorsing Candidates

Comment #261018 by sctparker on October 6, 2008 at 10:31 am

In an age where the public has seen fit to apply its own religious test, this would nail both candidates, severely.

I've never watched bones.. what's making you think (the main character?) is an atheist?

The fact that she goes off about the antiquated ridiculousness of religion on a regular basis. Her (Catholic) partner Booth can never refute her logic.

4. Petition YouTube for Pat Condell

That's got to be pretty close to hate speech, surely?

That's the problem with having "hate speech" laws in the first place. In no time at all, it becomes "All speech not approved by the mental hygiene commissars is banned".

And don't think for a second that that wasn't the plan all along.

Orwell nailed it, he just got the terms wrong.

His term - "crimethink" is a synonym for today's term "hate speech".

5. The real difference between liberals and conservatives

I wasn't saying anyone called Laurie a Marxist, I stated that her comment made it sound like Dr. Dawkins espoused it. I doubt that's what she literally meant, though. Sarcasm is very hard to get across in print.

Maybe I misunderstand the poster Laurie at 13, but I've seen nothing from RD that indicated his being Marxist.

7. Anglicans back Darwin over 'noisy' creationists

"Personally, he may even be an atheist but as Richard Dawkins says, you cannot be elected to high office in the US as an atheist. The only way you could is to lie and constantly sing gods praise.

This means that in the US, honest intellectuals are barred from high office.

Again, not an issue of left or right.

Both parties pander to religion to get elected which is really really sad. "

EvidenceOnly nails it.

It's damn sad that the Founders had the wisdom to forbid the institution of religious tests (Article VI, section 3), but the public at large saw fit to rescind that. Maybe a society will come about that makes it stick.

"The problem with creationism essentially comes from only one religious group - evangelical christians."

It's pretty much the de facto rule in muslim schooling, too.

Or is that one of those "goes without saying" things?

"Darwin and everything that has been done in his name"

Um, saywha?

It ain't "Darwin Ackbar!" the beheaders are screaming.

Just another one of those history deniers that think Hitler wasn't Catholic.

10. Spore's Intelligent Designer

Yes, Rob, how *dare* he use his money the way he wants to, the counter-revolutionary scoundrel!

As for the world, I'd say the greater problem is the creepin shariah that gains more sway as time goes on.

11. Stupid flies live longer: study

Comment #189420 by sctparker on June 6, 2008 at 8:43 am

Of course, it's a balancing act. Humans live longer than other primates because we evolved the mental capacity to fiddle with our environment, and in fact start to direct our evolution and that of other species.

Were it not for increasing smarts, the homo branch would've been short-lived indeed.

12. A New Step In Evolution

Being able to observe the evolutionary process right in front of you must be something to see.

What would happen if these citratophilic E. Coli were in the environment in which they normally live?

13. Physicist Claims First Real Demonstration of Cold Fusion

Phil Rimmer beat me to the point I would've made. This especially applies if they can cut prices by half or more compared to fossil-fuel driven power and still turn a higher profit margin.

But hey, let's not let facts and logic get in the way of a good Two Minutes Hate ™.

14. Scientists rally against creationist 'superstition'

Comment #187571 by sctparker on June 2, 2008 at 10:19 am

One thing I try to pass to students is that you can apply natural selection principles to most anything. That's essentially the main thrust of Dr. Dawkins' meme theory, but it can be applied to other areas, like economics.

15. Americans pray at the pump for cheaper petrol

Comment #179433 by sctparker on May 13, 2008 at 8:43 am

Best way to deal with gas prices (and this applies outside the states): Build nuke plants and work toward all electrical. When the eco-panicked show up to stop the construction, treat them like the saboteurs they are.

We've had 40 years to work on this, but let the eco-freaks sue everyone who tried to move nuke tech along.

And before someone holds forth with standard whine #n: "But it's the oil companies suppressing it!", let me throw out a preemptive bullshit flag.

There is no reason that the likes of Exxon and Shell wouldn't love to charge your car for $20, as opposed to filling it with gas for $50. Given the absurdly low cost of nuclear-generated power (something France can probably attest to), their margin would be huge by comparison to gas, which yields 10c/gallon.

Further, if those same companies offer conversion kits for existing cars, they open another revenue stream, as well as increase their customer base.

Also, to #2, some of us have efficient cars, but that doesn't make matters much easier.

And I am sure there are a few federal employees somewhere that are pretty sick people. Like perhaps the soldiers that massacre people at Haditha.

You're about four memes and a thousand politico/media falsehoods behind, al-r.

One thing I think is notable from my own experience.

I'm a substitute teacher, and have experienced varying levels of work and cooperation. Guess who works the hardest? Middle eastern girls. Wonder why? /not

This seems like it would be perfect for WiiWare, Playstation Network, or XBox Live.
