I am sick of this term 'fundamentalist' being banded about. Atheist fundamentalist.. lots of people I'm sure either don't understand what a fundamentalist is (or an atheist for that matter) and simply squark what they have heard from the stupifyingly pathetic literature, or their own religious community. That man from Dundee, is another example, eager to misunderstand and so make the outrageous comparison of calling a child 'English' to calling a child Christian or Muslim.
I'm quite sure one has more basis in reality than the other.

5. Science lessons should tackle creationism and intelligent design
Comment #246376 by Chris_The_Positivist on September 12, 2008 at 8:38 am
Sounds like a great idea, but as Richard says himself, to teach the controversy is in a rather underhanded way, to allow creationist dogma into our classrooms. We know there is no controversy really and by allowing it in classrooms we feel we can educate against years of indoctrination. This is a bold idea and one that might work, but I'm concerned that this may open the door for creationism to be taught more seriously and thus confuse and delude young and suggestible minds.

I agree it's a very sad situation with regards to the perception held of atheists, despite this being a century well in advance of the times when we were indeed ignorant of the world and its peoples.
The whole axis of evil thing, I do also think these governments are wicked, but yeah I'm sure you would agree generalising in this way in politics is always going turn popular opinion of those elsewhere in the world against you. I think we do agree, also the need for action but with such a blunt approach, I do fear for our future sometimes. But yes I can certainly see how this came about given the bush administration's opposition....I hope we can have some clear thinking types in government one day who can inject some rationalism into what is now a very complicated and dangerous political situation.

Whats so bad about not believing in any god anyway? oh no we might go destroy the world coz Atheists deny god therefore have no knowing of whats good and evil?
Well infact Atheists are just that bit more intelligent. We can see the shades in between without resorting to comic book notions of captain good and doctor evil....tsk. Or more accurately god and satan lol. For example, labelling the middle east as an "axis of evil" I mean come on! your one step away from labelling it "THE LAND OF MORDOR" in a scary voice........

I guess it's true in Father Coyne's case aswell that science and reasoning has a very tough chance of being taken seriously when it has years of indoctrination at home to compete with... But how do we tackle a falsehood when even logic and evidence are batted away in favour of an emotional attachment to a delusional view of themselves and the world?

Exactly, like the ideas of the virgin birth, the resurrection, the son of a god being the savior and dying for our sins etc aren't original.
One just has to look at the hundreds of different gods before the Judea-Christian god was invented and just how many of them made the same claims. Mithras is a good one. This just highlights the evolution of religion. From small beginnings and multiple replications we arrive at the more complex monster we see today.
17. Decades Later, Still Asking: Would I Pull That Switch?
Comment #204752 by Chris_The_Positivist on July 5, 2008 at 5:05 pm
This is about social compliance, how people can accept authority without questioning it. Combined with the ambiguity surrounding a given person/groups rights, we draw a rather nice parallel with religion.
The indoctrinated chant 'we believe in god and the scripture' (with unquestioning faith) and 'those who try and divert you from the will of the lord are infidels' (that must be killed). That's the non religious in this context who basically have no rights with regards to 'religious truth'....
So with the rights of 'an infidel' equal to that of something like a criminal and an unquestioning authority ordering you to kill or to turn up the proverbial voltage, we can see how easy it can be for seemingly decent people to do atrocious things.

I'm glad to hear our prime minister is a proponent of such research. It would of been fairly easy for him to follow what the churches say, maybe this will help him win back some credibility and popularity in the polls.
I'm sure most rational people can see the overwhelming merits in such research and how the religious groups fascination and unjustified influence must be challenged. I hope this vote of support can now give way to sensible, careful and 'moral' research.

It's interesting how we can see at least one element of evolution in practice, at least something which is as a result of evolution, the ability of a lot of animals to quickly adapt to their surroundings in order to survive.
I'm sure this goes against the creationist dogma that all animals were 'created' as they are today, having gone through zero change and having never needed to accumulate those instinctive skills to adapt, think and survive.

That is amazing! I wonder what this says of the consciousness of crows?
I guess it goes to illustrate the arrogance of those people who believe we are unique in the world, 'god's' chosen creatures. The only animals capable of intelligent deduction, innovation (with respect to the crow and the bent wire) and of course adaption.

I chuckled too when the host announced that. I think it's really encouraging! :)
I guess the alternative that most intellectually inclined viewers are with the notion of a religious free world is too scary for them to contemplate!
Evidence of the moving moral zeitgeist perhaps? Finally spotting religion hiding behind the hideous atrocities in the name of faith? I think we've all had enough of irrational, out-dated ways of thinking. Behold the 21st century!! The end of the non-thinking dark ages. yay!

I feel it's unfair to speak about Richard Dawkins and his book The God Delusion when himself nor anyone who properly understands his position can reply and actually refute what the theists say.
It's unbelieveable that the 3% of those in the survey concerning 'pants saving' can be determined statistically significant. I'm sure most of those 3% were having a laugh!! Secularists indeed have no reason to respond to those 3% of people surveyed, vary rarily is any survey unanimous. We're not drones! Religion wishes to crush the minority voter where secularists aren't so tyrannical and instead recognise differing views as a by-product of human nature and of our free will.
