I think we need a definition of a "theory" pasted on the front page of this website, so the "Evolution is just a theory" argument, can be sorted out without the creationist cretins, even having to leave the page. Quickly, silently and affectively...(assasinating their stupid illogical arguments)

Exactly... I on the other hand, find it sad that this seems to be the way religion grabs hold of people. People will only truly turn to religion in the deepest hours, i.e when they are clutching for straws and are willing to substitute rationality for comfort. "Religion kinda kicks them when they down already."
Anyway got a maths test so got to get back to it.
Comment #260758 by Lev-CapeTown on October 6, 2008 at 2:38 am
Steve
I don't think the point is wanting to be controlled, I think the point is that some people when scared would rather hold onto false beliefs for comfort than face the evidence. Like when you panicking people always say you will be alright. Even if you going to die, they say That just to comfort you..... make sense?

Mitchell,
agreed there are about ten in the middle that do focus on that VenomFangX character, but i think it's a good thing to challenge someone like that as many people became big fans of he's gibberish rantings and it's always good to have a rationalising force. Granted one video response would of been sufficient tho....
Some of the earlier ones are great tho.

Titiana, exactly.
Sargeist, agree to disagree. I don't believe enjoying strawberry more than chocolate is wrong in anyway. But i do believe that being racist homophobic of a religious zealot is. I will focus my challenge against these view points, hopefully with the effect that it either curbs the spread or even reverses these attitudes for the greater good of mankind>> Sorry to get dramatic at the end there...
edit: effect vs affect?
Comment #253062 by Lev-CapeTown on September 24, 2008 at 4:13 am
Sargeist, steve your post makes sense to me too.
Yes it will take a while for attitudes to change, but I would like to see that rate of change boosted by actively challenging misinterpretations of reality. I would never ever invisualize thought police or anything of that nature. Just hard, loud challenges to peoples incorrect and bigotted view points about sex, race and religion.
Regarding your analogy, sure it will take a while for people to change. I live in South Africa and apartheid only ended 10 years ago, does that mean if i hear someone say," I fucking hate kaffirs, they disgust me!" that i should not chalenge them because it has only been a few years since the government stopped segregation? Doesn't seem right does it.
I'm all for boosting the rate of change..
Comment #253043 by Lev-CapeTown on September 24, 2008 at 3:44 am
Steve, I just think that to say it's fine for people to have homophobic, racist, want shariah law, etc view points, should not be left unchallenged, on the assumption that these people will not act on their feelings. I think that these viewpoints should be challenged so they don't spread and fester to other people that may act on their feelings>>
Comment #253029 by Lev-CapeTown on September 24, 2008 at 3:19 am
Steve I have to agree with Titiana and Fanusi on that point. I think leaving attitudes like that to fester by themselves without challenging them is not only cowardly but also setting us up for future problems.

Comment #251954 by Lev-CapeTown on September 22, 2008 at 11:31 am
Sciros fanusi,
Can I put forward an analogy that I think might illustrate my current viewpoint:
During the dreaded apartheid years the ANC put forward a non-violence political strategy which was largely successful in promoting political awareness around the world, but unfortunately was not enough to overthrow the government at the time and eventually it was decided that violence was inevitable to break the stranglehold that the government had on the people. After many deaths and horror stories we now live in a democratic country.
I understand that when peaceful protest no longer is effective then radical steps HAVE to be taken, but i do not believe that we are at that point yet. (While I presume Fanusi does). I think there are still many other roads (i.e. awareness) etc to take before jumping on Fanusi's radical highway.
Comment #251942 by Lev-CapeTown on September 22, 2008 at 11:15 am
Fanusi, I most certainly did not say I disagree with you in absolute terms. As I do not. I do believe that what you are sayng has merit and certainly is a threat. Where i disagree is the degree of the threat and also the particular angle of addressing the threat. Many of your solutions posted over the months are extreme and almost slanted towards radical, making them impractical and useless.

There is difference between setting someone up to extrude a particular response in order to take that response and manipulate it out of context:
e.g.
Einstein: God doesn't play dice.
Ben Stein: See I told you... Einstein is a believer
AND
lying in order to get someone to answer a question that they would quite easily answer to anyone of their believing friends, but are to afraid to answer to a non-believer over fear of being criticized.
If an idea is flawed, it is totally fair to ridicule it (to a certain extent) and the idea should not garner any higher level of respect then any other idea.
If someone is so scared that there ideas will be received with ridicule..... three options:
1.Research your topic and come up with better proof.
2.Change your idea so it is predicative and in cohesion with the evidence.
3. Stay in your own little fairytale world and stop polluting the world with your bullshit

The youth league of the ANC have threatened that if he is not aquitted of the fraud charge SA will pay dearly. And the sad thing is, I still think he is better than Thabo Mbeki.
