1. Small, Yes, but Mighty: The Molecule Called Water

Comment #55258 by Kervinator on July 10, 2007 at 11:26 am

When God flooded the entire Earth and killed all of its inhabitants - except Noah, of course -- where did the water drain after it stopped raining?

As everyone knows, this is just a story but some people do take it literally. There are more problems with the flood story as outlined here.

3. God not out of the question for most Canadians

Comment #54176 by Kervinator on July 5, 2007 at 9:04 pm

As a Canadian, I'm embarrassed about the polls and the fact that in 1980, the government changed one line in the national anthem to "God keep our land" instead of "Oh Canada". But people sing it without really caring about the meaning.

Religion rarely comes up in conversation. It's more of a personal thing around here rather than out in the open like it seems to be in the US.

4. Unorthodox Atheist

Glad that didn't happen in my school 20-odd years ago and I got to read some classics that were banned south of the border (I live in Canada). Of Mice and Men comes to mind.

5. An Inquisition in science's name

Comment #51065 by Kervinator on June 21, 2007 at 10:34 am

For those who don't know, Preston Manning (who's father, Ernest, was Premier of Alberta for many years) was the original Reform Party of Canada leader, who lost out to Stockwell Day (another religious type) when the party morphed into the Canadian Alliance Party, which then merged with the Conservatives, now the ruling party in Canada, with Stephen Harper as Prime Minister. We are very fortunate that someone so religious never got to rule in Canada (unlike the USA). Comparing science to the inquisition is absolutely ridiculous, laughable and has hurt his reputation (whatever he had left).

6. Your favorite book in the last 25 years?

Bill Bryson's "A Short History of Nearly Everything". An excellent read.

7. Atheism isn't the final word

I'm raising my kids (6-year-old twins and a 9-year old) as non-religious and so far, they seem just like any other kids. I don't think it's a religion's responsibility to give your kids morals; it's the (well-informed) parents'.

8. Debate between Alister McGrath and Peter Atkins

Comment #27467 by Kervinator on March 24, 2007 at 6:40 pm

McGrath states that we are not born atheists but agnostics. This is just plain wrong. Atheism is the absence of belief in a deity whereas agnosticism is the argument that there is not enough evidence for or against the existence of a deity. Since when is a child born with the knowledge of the "possibility" of there being a god? I'm surprised Atkins didn't jump all over that one.

9. 'God Is Not a Moderate'

Just a hunch, but I think our fear of death is increasing at the same rate as our standard of living. Life is just too good.

10. The Bright Revolution

Great song, Alakan!

Personally, I don't like labelling people. As someone mentioned earlier, we are all humans. I'm not about to go wearing a t-shirt with "I'm an Atheist" on it to make a point. If anyone asks my opinion about religion, I'll give it to them. But honestly, religion rarely comes up as a topic of conversation. It seems most people avoid it these days for some reason....
