1. Sharia law 'could have UK role'

Comment #204300 by eno on July 4, 2008 at 4:26 pm

My country's obsession with multi-culturalism have turned us into spineless morons.

Many years ago something went wrong. People started confusing open-mindedness with anything goes. They were mistaken.

The misguided left have put in place laws to protect backward ideologies and by doing so has placed everyone in danger.

We must stand up. WE MUST.

Will you?

2. Richard Dawkins on Doctor Who

Comment #201625 by eno on June 30, 2008 at 12:34 am

Russel T. Davies (executive producer) and the crew said they were more in awe of Richard Dawkins appearing in Doctor Who than all the other guest stars they've had since it came back!

Russell is an atheist too. I'm pretty sure the new executive producer/head wrtier Stephen Moffatt is too as he stated in an interview that he doesn't believe in a soul.

Oh, and as for "isn't it odd that when thee earth is mysteriously moved across space that they ask advice from a biologist?" - he is also the Chair in Public Understanding of Science so he would be the most obvious choice.

3. Stop distorting young minds!

Comment #199854 by eno on June 26, 2008 at 12:33 pm

I love it when Grayling gets angry!

His points are eloquently expressed. Those Anousic are a wily lot.

6. 'I despise Islamism': Ian McEwan faces backlash over press interview

Comment #197529 by eno on June 22, 2008 at 9:48 am

Great stuff. McEwan is talking sense and its about time others joined him. Most people feel the same about the privileges Islam and Christianity gets here in England but most are scared to criticise because many Islamists murder people who disagree with them.

The UK is suffocating in multiculturalism and anyone who stands up against it are shouted down by bleeding heart liberals.

Some of us have had enough.

7. Intelligent people 'less likely to believe in God'

Comment #192380 by eno on June 12, 2008 at 11:47 pm

I think the difference is that today more people are open about not believing in gods and monsters. A hundred years ago it was far more difficult but today we are willing to stand up and be counted and we've cottoned on that there is no reason why someone connected to religion should have special privileges.

Also, thanks to people like Dawkins, Hitch, Dennett and Harris and all the others like you and me, other people know its okay to be OUT about their atheism.

8. John McCain: America a Christian nation, needs Christian president

Comment #190335 by eno on June 8, 2008 at 10:21 pm

I'm all for intelligent discussion and welcome contrary views but sometimes these threads seem a little childish in their comments. Its a real turn off.

9. Investigating Atheism

Comment #167358 by eno on April 24, 2008 at 12:18 am

The site seems to present atheists as miserable despairing madmen.

10. School bars same-sex partners at formals

Comment #162034 by eno on April 16, 2008 at 2:59 am

The kids should just go ahead and attend the ball - and dance like there's no-one watching

12. Austin Dacey - The Secular Conscience

Comment #149399 by eno on March 25, 2008 at 2:54 pm

The CFI's regular podcast, Point of Inquiry is an incredible series. They'll all available on iTunes and I recommend everyone subscribes to it.

The wonderful DJ Grothe is a great host as he really will challenge his guests even if he shares their views.

Probably the best podcast series around.

13. Inventor Doesn't Dare Say 'Perpetual Motion Machine'

Comment #124290 by eno on February 9, 2008 at 3:26 am

Perhaps this machine is what Ayn Rand was writing about in her 'Atlas Shrugged' - a motor like that could change so much. Who knows, who is John Galt?

As Dan Dennett said at the AAI conference last year: "They're on the run..."

16. Dawkins is third most prolific internet Briton

Comment #117714 by eno on January 29, 2008 at 12:38 pm

Nice one Dawk! And thank you Josh - you're doing an amazing job here.

Its interesting that even the creator of the www, Tim Berners-Lee, is only at number 23!

And Imogen Heap is delightful. Her debut album is excellent. Suppose she's the thinking man's Christina Aguilera...

17. Heath Ledger Death: Baptist Group To Protest At Memorial

Comment #115864 by eno on January 25, 2008 at 12:13 am

I'm in favour of having these message boards for intelligent debate and comment and not for people to spout homophobic nonsense. Is it possible for us to choose to ignore the obviously provocative comments so the boards don't turn into childish name-calling?

I was a great admirer of Heath and am saddened to see such hatred pointed to his memory and his family. He was a sensational actor, just watch Brokeback Mountain to see his incredible performance.

Oh, what a world...

Its not the done thing to be openly proud of being British these days but after reading about you on here George I feel unashamedly proud of the British no-nonsense spirit.

Wishing you clear horizons for the future.

21. The religiosity test: Doubters need not apply

Comment #106196 by eno on January 2, 2008 at 1:18 pm

My dear American cousins! I love you so much and I love your land incredibly, especially the West Coast. But why do you allow this to go on in your country? I'm probably being too harsh so I apologise but please don't allow this man (or Huckleberry or whatever he's called) into that fine White House!

Not that you have much to choose from. I spend a little time every morning before work reading the online New York Times and Washington Post and am saddened by your political choices. Of course, its not a great deal better here in Blighty but at least our leaders actually believe in evolution.

Good luck my friends.

22. Changing my Mind

Comment #106188 by eno on January 2, 2008 at 1:11 pm

Agnostics ARE atheists! Or rather, atheists are agnostics. To qualify as an atheist you just need to deny the existence of God or gods, come to that.

I find that most people I come into contact with (I live in the South of England) don't believe in the Christian God but wouldn't call themselves atheists because they rarely even think about it. They prefer agnostic because it is less aggressive. I do agree with them but its time to make a stand and to be more forthright especially with all this awful Creationist/Intelligent Design arse-gravy that is about at the moment.

I've just joined the British Centre for Science in Education and recommend others to do so. They have an excellent website.

Comment #105867 by eno on January 2, 2008 at 2:14 am

Dear Roger Stanyard at the BCSE - thank goodness there are people like you and your Centre in the UK looking out for us. Thank you, Sir. You have my full support.

24. Mother Nature is Not Our Friend

Comment #105864 by eno on January 2, 2008 at 2:07 am

There are more pressing issues to be concerned about before we turn our liberal and privileged minds to sorting out nature. Let's focus on combating Islam before it blows us all up.

25. A War On Science

Comment #105578 by eno on January 1, 2008 at 5:01 am

Excellent edition of Horizon, thank you for sharing as I missed it when it was on.

It seems obvious that if science was taught in schools in a better and more positive manner then perhaps we wouldn't have these disillusioned pious nincompoops manipulating others that a god designed everything.

There is certainly a war on science and it seems to be coming from America.

26. Pope's exorcist squads will wage war on Satan

Comment #104617 by eno on December 29, 2007 at 2:35 am

What schmucks. Instead of fighting the real threat of fundamentalist Christianity and Islam they've decided to fight Satanism?

This isn't even news.

27. For the Love of Christ

Comment #101856 by eno on December 21, 2007 at 3:15 am

I find it difficult not to have a cognitive superiority over morons like these.

I wonder how Hitch would deal in a debate with this chap?

28. The Four Horsemen: on Christmas

Comment #99950 by eno on December 18, 2007 at 12:06 am

Quality of the image is not that important to me and for lots of other people. The story or content is always what people are looking for and The Four Horsemen certainly have it.

Idea for the next 'Conversations with Richard Dawkins':

The Dawk, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Salman Rushdie and Philip Pullman

PLEASE!

29. THE FOUR HORSEMEN - Available Now on DVD!

Comment #98946 by eno on December 15, 2007 at 1:14 am

Josh, you did a great job of filming that discussion as it looks totally professional.

31. An Open Letter to Richard Dawkins

Comment #96918 by eno on December 11, 2007 at 5:05 am

Hey eno! *I* am Benjamin O'Donnell.

I think you might be dissing the wrong person there.
Too true, apologies! Meant it for Jonathan Morris.

32. An Open Letter to Richard Dawkins

Comment #96807 by eno on December 11, 2007 at 12:09 am

The old Hitler, Stalin and Marx argument. *YAWN*

The problem is that religious people like Benjamin O'Donnell are bigots in that are just not listening to a different point of view. Sometimes I feel like giving up and just letting them get on with destroying the world. But then again, it's my planet too!

I'm so tired of the pious. Perhaps they will win in the end?

I need to read some Hitch to get my strength back...

36. Highway to hysteria

Comment #94315 by eno on December 5, 2007 at 9:05 am

That is frighteningly insane. I can't imagine anything near that level of public moronity in the UK. Why are Americans much more likely to do that sort of thing? Don't get me wrong, I love America a great deal and visit California at least once a year and I've met anyone like that in LA. Maybe its time for the pious to all move to the same states and create their own country so the rest of us can get on with our lives...

37. Mother dies after refusing blood

Comment #85262 by eno on November 5, 2007 at 11:36 am

What is sadder? That this poor misguided woman was blinded by religion that killed her or that her poor children are likely to be indoctrinated into this absurd sect against their will?

Religion poisons everything.

38. War in Heaven: Hitchens Meets D'Souza on Home Turf

Comment #82950 by eno on October 28, 2007 at 10:42 am

D'Souza is a charlatan as most of us know. I found his closing comment insulting, plainly mistaken and ridiculous. I was more angered that Hitch wasn't able to respond. These 'formal' debates don't work when people are hindered by time.

We've all seen Hitch win this sort of argument dozens of times, maybe he thought he'd let them win won. How very forgiving of him.

Either way, Dan Dennett was right when he announced at the AAI conference that religion 'is on the run, they have been for a thousand years'. Maybe it's the job of atheists, agnostics, free-thinkers, Humanists, whatever we call ourselves to help free those that are blinded by the abhorrent tyranny of theism...I know where I stand, do you?

39. Debate between Christopher Hitchens and Dinesh D'Souza

Comment #82700 by eno on October 27, 2007 at 9:04 am

Man alive, that was painful. D'Souza is unbelievable (no pun intended). Hitch is right when he says that D'Souza really does believe the non-sense that he comes up with. I urge you to watch part nine again and not be flabberghasted with absurdity about what comes out of D'Souza's mouth. He is delusional and doesn't do his side much good.

40. Make Richard Dawkins a Knight

Comment #80361 by eno on October 21, 2007 at 12:51 pm

As much as I admire RD and am grateful for his literature for inspiring me I won't be signing the petition. I abhore the royal family and I wish us Brits could be rid of them. They represent an insulting heredity system that is out of touch with society and out of touch with morality at large.

41. God's honest truth?

Comment #79878 by eno on October 18, 2007 at 11:59 pm

My answer is simple and straight forward: yes, Britain should follow suit. We should follow suit for the sake of our children, our freedom and for The Truth.

42. In honour of Dan Dennett

Comment #77443 by eno on October 9, 2007 at 10:23 am

A touching tribute. I must thank one of my intellectual heroes, Richard Dawkins for introducing me to Dennett. I read his Breaking the Spell ealier this year and was so very impressed with it. From reading that Dennett introduced me to the rather wonderful Jared Diamond whose books Guns, Germs and Steel and The Rise and Fall of the Third Chimpanzee are in my opinion essential books for anyone interested in evolution, religion and history. Of course, it was then Jared who then introduced me to..you get the idea.

As Dan would say, thank goodness for great ideas.

43. The Future Forum Presents: Christopher Hitchens and Marvin Olasky

Comment #50136 by eno on June 15, 2007 at 7:59 am

Hitch was on top form at this debate. Olasky came across as a poor contender.

Loved Hitch's rebuttal of Galloway! Brilliant.

44. Interview with Richard Dawkins

Comment #49544 by eno on June 12, 2007 at 10:48 am

Another excellent interview and I really liked the answer on Native American religion.

"Evidence is Evidence". Brilliant.

45. Christopher Hitchens on The Hour

Comment #49540 by eno on June 12, 2007 at 10:30 am

Another great interview. I really like that show too. Hitch is an old fashioned Brit when it comes to his demeanour of smoking and drinking, just love the guy.

46. Christopher Hitchens on Religion

Comment #48846 by eno on June 9, 2007 at 7:22 am

Bonzai - if you're sick of hearing from him then don't listen to him!

47. Christopher Hitchens on Religion

Comment #48843 by eno on June 9, 2007 at 7:15 am

The caller who stated that every society has had relisgion and prayed is mistaken. I would refer him (and others) to the brilliant book 'Guns, Germs and Steel' by Jared Diamond that takes a fascinating look at early humanity and pre-Christianity. Also, it might be worth looking at 'Breaking the Spell' by Daniel C. Dennett. People really should do some research before they start spurting emotional and irratitional and subjective tosh.

Then he goes to talk about praying for his daughter. What a twit. He actually thinks that it was his praying that saved his daughter and not the doctors who administered the chemotherapy! How offensive.

48. The 'Is God...Great?' Debate

Comment #48442 by eno on June 8, 2007 at 1:39 am

darwin2: you seem to accept evolution and other facts about the universe but then you come out with piffle like 'I believe we have an eternal soul'. What are you basing this on? A dream? A 'feeling'?

Whatever it is, it is certainly not scientific.

49. The 'Is God...Great?' Debate

Comment #48304 by eno on June 7, 2007 at 11:23 am

Hitchens is a tornado of a public speaker and debator.

It's about time we had someone this fierce to speak up on behalf of atheists, free-thinkers, Brites, Secularists or whatever you want to call us.

He is formidabale unlike the idiotic zealots that challenge him because he argues with the greatest of tools: reason, language and sense.

Like Dawkins, he is seeking the truth for all of our sakes.

50. It came like yesterday

Comment #45578 by eno on May 28, 2007 at 9:33 am

Interesting stuff. Jared Diamond's 'Guns, Germs and Steel' gives a fascinating insight into early humans. Worth checking out.
