2. New Planet Could Be Earthlike, Scientists Say

Comment #35274 by Joe_OD on April 26, 2007 at 6:45 pm

nine9s

Magnetic fields are usually created by liquid metal dynamos inside planets, at their cores. I don't think the planet has to be rotating. Maybe I'm wrong.

Also, planets like Mercury don't have dynamos, but have massive, solid cores of iron, which create a magnetic field. It's weaker though.

3. Bill Maher - APATHEIST

Comment #35269 by Joe_OD on April 26, 2007 at 6:36 pm

Bill Maher isn't an atheist, he has stated that clearly before, but he does think that all religions are bullshit, and harmful.

I look forward to this movie, and would suggest people support him. We don't have the clout not to. We should bring all our guns to bear on religion.

I got my copy.

So far it's very good.

So far he is using examples from his life to illustrate the harm of religion on society. It gives the examples a personal touch. His aim seems to be to explore at greater length some of the types of things that Harris and Dawkins summarize, like the admonishments by church leaders against condom use and immunization in the fight against disease, and to show their harm.

That's all I can say so far, I'm only 50 pages in.

I would suggest just reading it in the book store if you don't want to buy it. If it's similar in length to Letter to a Christian Nation, then it will only take an hour or two to finish.

I certainly won't buy it.

6. Prophets of the new atheism

The best part is when these people talk about novelty and "old" traditions. He connects "new atheists" with their predecessors in the 18th and 20th centuries, as if to say that we are living in the past, clinging to an old system, reviving ancient beliefs, nothing like what they are doing.

What a dummy.

8. The Most Hated Family in America

If Hitler really understood evolution then he would have realized that breeding a master race would take longer than his thousand year reich would take to play out. Hitler didn't understand evolution, he understood social Darwinism, a bastardization of the ideas put forth by Darwin, and pseudo-scientific Nazi eugenics.

Jesus does teach much morality that is sound, but he also declares that Old Testament law must be upheld, which means he sanctions what these people are doing. More so, if O.T. law must be upheld, you must kill if you want to follow the Bible and get into heaven, there is no way around that.

These people aren't extreme enough. The Bible clearly says to kill those who, for example, tempt you with other gods, as well as a whole list of others. Unless they are secretly killing people, then they are ignoring biblical teachings as well, and are going to hell with the rest of us apostates.

The only people who truly understand and follow their Abrahamic religion's teachings are terrorists.

10. Atheist says he's victim of religious hate crime

On "Ash Wednesday" this year I went around with an upside-down cross sharpied onto my forehead. Perhaps I shouldn't have been so confident that I wouldn't get physically assaulted.

I did do it at my university, ASU, so maybe the people here are a little more progressive than the general population.

Thinking back, about half of my biology class of several hundred students said they were creationists of some type when polled anonymously, so perhaps not.

13. Richard Dawkins interview with Paula Zahn

The arched eyebrow and smirk Ellen Johnson gets when the preacher calls atheists "hypocrites" made me smile.

14. Panel discussion on atheism where no atheists are included

Comment #21199 by Joe_OD on February 8, 2007 at 2:22 am

To anyone who might not have seen the first time, you can go here to message Paula Zahn:
http://www.cnn.com/feedback/forms/form5.html?11

Consider briefly thanking her for taking an interest in this subject before pointing out the problems with her panel selection, or their inane remarks. Perhaps add that it will benefit her to represent both sides of a supposedly objective report. People are more likely to take your suggestion if you point out how doing what you want benefits them.

Glad to help, mattjuan and Simon Quick.
