..."in the midst of the extreme deprivation, dehumanisation and despair of Auschwitz..."
Whether it's a concentration camp, a flood, being mugged, dying of boils, they rarely seem to mentally come to a full stop to consider the reality they're in, with a righteous indignation. Never that reasonable, "Hey, wait a minute, on the one hand, benevolent Creator, on the other--crap, nothing but painful, endless crap. What's up with that?"
Just how DO they square the painful reality of human living and dying with their idea of a omnipotent, omnicient, good God? The problem of evil concept is never satisfactorily answered by a theist.
Given the reality, and liking things logical, I always get a chuckle out of not believing there is no god, but imagining, and convincing others, that the creator god simply has to be, must be, an evil maggot. Yes, all things considered, that makes sense.

Speaking of ignorance, has anyone here ever asked AD or any of the others if they've read any schorlarly work on the actual history of the (dare I say) creation of the so-called bible? Doing so is a truly enlightening experience, if one wants to be enlightened, that is. Myth writ large it all is, with only a few real people and situations thrown in. Of course, none of the gods were/are real. The evolution (ha!) of the character Yahweh is fascinating. But some want to, you know, dodge all that information.

If something was done to one in a "baptism" that left a lasting physical scar, say a tatoo or some such, I would be all for eliminating it. But since it is just a bogus ceremony with no attending bodily mark... ? I was both baptised and "confirmed" but of what possible relevance is that today, so many years later? If there was some sort of actual public listing of people who wish to declare their break with what was done to them as children, as Tycho said, I'd be all for it. And my name would be on it. But to expect religious officials to go along with a request for an "unbaptism" is ridiculous, even if imagining their emotional reaction is funny as heck. Closest they'd come to "WTF?" possibly.
Lee, you write as though you are under the thumb of your mother-in-law. I do hope that's not the case--may you not make your own decision for your OWN childrn?

Some of the credulity on this site is amusing. A few of you need to get a serious grip. Charlatans and crazy people still have an audience, and religion remains respectable, in part because some people can still assert nonsense, and SOME people will still get all pop-eyed over it. "Wow! Still with ADH.
Just a few random thoughts from the atheist troll (that would be me).
You'd have to wonder after awhile how he has time for GodFather, Jesus, prayer to both, church, job, bible study, wife, and children, wouldn't you?
Still wondering about the motivation. Hmmm, maybe Jesus told him to come here. You know, like he's infiltrating us or something? Of course, Jesus and GodFather can't change our minds and hearts somehow; they have to "send" someone.
I wonder if he prays before he posts, so as to get it just right. Do you think? Maybe his church and some of his friends are in on it. Maybe they're all praying for us! Now wouldn't that be a hoot? The devil has a strong hold on us though, maybe they need to fast as well! Prayer and fasting together seem to get GodFather's attention better than either alone for some reason. Ooooo, maybe we have DEMONS! Maybe we need exorcisms all of us!
But no, given his tactic, all we need is to be talked to death about Christianity. All we need is to change our minds! He has to prove he's SMARTER than us, that's it! And look, he's trying just SO hard to do that, don't you think?
ADH, why don't you tell us about how we will suffer eternal hell if we don't accept Jesus? Why are you not trying to scare us? Why aren't you trying to convince us that God just loves us so, and look, there's Jesus hanging dead on the cross to prove it! ADH, gee, you'd think that would be enough, right there, wouldn't you? Why oh why can't we see the truth of all this, hmm?
What IS your motive?
Is this your self-appointed "ministry"?
Your personal contribution to the salvation of the world?
Why are you here?

hey Northern Bright
Your cool and collected posts are always respected, no doubt, and such a contrast to my raving, to be sure. Thanks for responding thus. And I can see your point about having one's intellect piqued, although I find that the real world (so to speak) gives me enough food for thought.
But here is MY point: I have (as have so many others) been subject to nonsensical xtian garbage all of my life, I've been there and done that, and I don't have even the slightest interest in wading through same on the message board of an atheist site. If you might then say that I should just not visit, then what you are proposing in effect is that an atheist should stay away so that a theist can have their foolish voice heard, and those who wish to go round and round and round with their blathering should be allowed, encouraged even, to keep up the good fight, in order to strenghten their arguments. Well, I just don't buy it. In fact, I think that conversations that devolve that way should be put on an alternate thread. Yeah. Really.
I can hardly adequately express my sense of disappointment and annoyance when I see "ADH" pop up on my screen. I'm calmly reading comments of fellow atheists, sipping my coffee perhaps, placidly minding my own business, enjoying like-minded opinions [which there is nothing wrong with, I might add, having been subject to wrong-headed stupidity most all of one's previous life], when--ZAP!--here pops up mr. I'm-a-christian-and-I'm-better-than-you-and-you're-going-to-hell-if-you-don't-repent-of-your-sins-and-accept-jesus-as-your-lord-and-savior and my enjoyment of the moment is lost.
I'd be sure there are others similarly persuaded, but without the nerve to complain as I have.
As I said before, it's like an unwanted invasion. I'm one of the people who hasn't all the knowledge of some, nor all the smart, intelligent arguments (I won't say who I always look for because I don't want them to get a big head about it-lol), but I do enjoy poking in the occasional comment, and I do learn quite a bit from the opinions of the collected minds here.
Someone like ADH having a free rein here just spoils my enjoyment, that's all. It's that simple, and that selfish. I am an atheist surrounded by irrational faith, I have enough of it IRL, I'm sick to death of it, I don't want to hear/see that nonsense on an atheist board, and this is especially hard now considering the season. Sigh. Sometimes I wish I could hibernate or somesuch during the "holidays." Bah humbug!!!

yet another thread of comments muddied up with ADH and Steve. Boring!
so says the atheist troll.
My original question to ADH, deemed so unacceptable in polite internet company, stands.
ADH is not here to learn anything (none of them are) and he mocks atheism and atheists every chance he gets.
Are we having fun yet?
I think I'll go back to just reading the articles. Having ADH here is like having an UNINVITED annoying stranger in your house who's intent to challenge and make wrong everything you say.
I also think the people who go on and on and on with theists here just like to see themselves in print, so to speak, because nothing ever comes of it, even if the thread goes on for months. NO ONE will be convinced of anything in this venue. And, to repeat, they don't want to be either.
To anyone who will listen I say again, if ADH is having his day at the zoo, what does that make you?
One poster I really liked and respected (who's gone now, seemingly) agreed with my previous assessment of this guy, which I will now repeat:
He's a passive-agressive nutter.
But, what the hey, for all who will, enjoy the mockery. Fries with that?

This all reminds me of my cult days.
It was a cult attempting to follow all of the OT laws. And of course following all the OT examples of conduct.
It turns out the leader of this pathetic group was an inveterate philanderer, but he hit upon the idea that if he pointed out that the OT guys had multiple wives (and/or concubines) and THEY were honored by Yahweh, well then, who are we to think it should be done any differently?
Well, as it turns out, all the men were all rah rah about this development, and all the women were aghast, to put it mildly. In my time there I saw sad utter misery perpetrated as men threw off or put aside loving wives and waved their cocks after other, mostly young, women, brought them into the home and demanded that the "first wife" give the "second wife" (or the third or the fourth) her due respect. I saw many many women despairing and grieved, and children confused and freaked. My own husband, although he didn't disagree with the concept, set his mind to not joining in, allowing that one wife was plenty enough.
For this group of men, all this was about was a justification to act emotionally irresponsibly in the immature pursuit of more than one cunt. Plain and simple. I would guess that across the board in society, it is mostly the same. It is mostly the men that want this "freedom."

I see no real difference between the puffed-up inanity of his reasoning than from any other religious believer with whom I have conversed. Though he might have stayed so he could answer questions which his appearance on this site triggered, he did choose to make his appearance in the way he did, which was far from delightful--I do agree with your describing him as a passive-aggressive nutter (with manners and some polish, of course).

Steve99, people like ADH who are equiped to back up all their insane, bat shit claims with bogus arguments and evidence, and all of their arguments from (equally insane) authority, really are the dangerous ones. Your warm hearted treatment, along with some others, suggests that you imagine this is all just some sort of silly parlor game with no real consequences out in the real world. Please do enlighten me as to the nature of your "delight." I am sincerely interested.
Personally, I don't think ADH was joking about the zoo; his reference to our "tearing the stuffing..." only strengthens my view.
And, do you really think civility is the highest value in all cases? Isn't this "be nice no matter what" sort of a, you know, Christian thing? And the rest of you, how completely and harmfully and gleefully divorced from reality does a person have to get before your smiles and all your warm fuzzies turn to chills?
