I just wanted to clarify my position regarding stating John Humphreys is a fuckwit. On the evidence of this article, he is.
I normally have a lot of respect for the man and listen to him most mornings on radio 4 and so expected better from him. To see all the usual strawmen etc. was a very disappointing experience. I have been coming to this site for its whole existence and have seen all the arguments as used by the religious and their apologists and am simply fed up with their nonsense.
With regard to bridge building: what you see as a bridge I see as a gangplank.
With regard to swearing: I agree that there can be too much but once in a while to make a point is surely fine. As an atheist I am under no religious instruction not to swear.

I've spent time considering this article and have come to the opinion that I will need to write a long response. However I can't be bothered as it boils down to : what a fuckwit.
3. Only secular schools will overcome sectarianism
Comment #65745 by flashbaby on August 26, 2007 at 9:06 am
I went to school in the west coast of Scotland and the non catholic schools were effectively protestant schools. I only met anyone who was clearly neither protestant nor catholic when a family of ugandan asians appeared in my final year at school.
There was one celtic supporter who was regularrly beaten up though as I recall not for supporting celtic but for coming from a mixed family ie catholic mother and protestant father even though he was raised a protestant it did not save him. He was the only "catholic" I knew of at the school.
As a Partick Thistle supporter I was merely pitied.

Comment #49857 by flashbaby on June 14, 2007 at 12:11 am
I'm watching this too and the argument against Hitchens boils down to: God does not poison everything. The god botherer points to one or two examples of good religious people and that's it. So lame and misses the point, a poisoned well may not kill everyone who drinks from it but it is still a poisoned well.

Who could forget the freindly banter between Celtic and Rangers fans.
Partick Thistle fans like me for a start.
6. The Creation Museum: Prepare to believe
Comment #40980 by flashbaby on May 15, 2007 at 9:22 am
I believe it will make a loss of at least $3.5M dollars a year by their own figures, so this is good news as it will divert money from elsewhere. They will be preaching to the choir in any event so this so called museum is not too much to worry about.
7. If God is talking to you, too, Mr Cameron - don't listen
Comment #23424 by flashbaby on February 28, 2007 at 2:30 pm
I laughed like a drain when he lost his seat 10 years ago. I beleive that I may have been too hasty in my judgement of this man as he now seems to talk sense more often than not. But isn't the ability to change your mind one of the key distinctions between the rational and the religious?
Comment #19034 by flashbaby on January 24, 2007 at 12:47 pm
A lot of movements etc are named by their detractors. Quakers for one, and I beleive Hoyle coined the term Big Bang as he was a steady stater.
Why not either educate people to accept the term atheist in a positive light or use one of terms used by our detractors. I like Fool as the bible uses that term for atheists IIRC. I hate Bright, I am not a light bulb.
9. 12 Year Old Girl Prodigy Paints Pictures of God
Comment #18945 by flashbaby on January 23, 2007 at 11:38 pm
I don't think concerns about plagiarism are justified as I think it is technically impossible to plagiarise paintings. It is possible to copy or to forge them but anything else is a unique work. Poetry on the other hand is plagiarisible for example as you can use someone else's words.
If find these paintings the worst sort of commercial pap and think looking at her website that the whole thing is a hoax. Whilst they are the worst sort of pap they show a sophistication that is just too unbelievable in one so young, especially their emotional content, albeit a sugar-coated one, is too rich for a girl of 6 or 7 in her earliest works.
10. Intelligent design to feature in school RE lessons
Comment #18791 by flashbaby on January 23, 2007 at 2:44 am
I think this is great as it keeps ID and Creationism out of science classes and gets atheism into RE classes for the first time. Seeing the only mention of these things in school will be in RE classes reinforces the idea they are not science.
When ID or creationists have made testable predictions these have been easily refuted so this is then science but wrong, refuted science.

I want to become an aztec so I can complain that I have not got the right to pluck people's hearts out. Just because it is a so called religious belief don't make it right.
I never hear of the religoius railing against seafood eaters but God hates them just as much as Gays.

I think there is a new idea developing in the mind of creationist/fundies; that Richard is somehow the head of atheism, both dembski and the libellous peterg123 seem to show this attitude. Is it based on the fact they have a leader, god, who they obey and assume we are the same and Richard is our god.
If this is true then I deny the holy spirit, allah and dawkins as god.
I don't collect stamps so I suppose there is a grand anti stamp collector out there, who I am happy to deny too. After all philately gets you nowhere.
Comment #13669 by flashbaby on December 19, 2006 at 4:17 am
I watched it last night. Very disappointing.
"I dogmatically don't collect stamps", would be as valid a statement as any of this idiot's rambling conjectures. I suppose there is now a straw shortage in the UK as a result of the huge numbers of used and discarded straw elephants in this crap. I even missed University Challenge to watch it!

And yogic flying truly believable.
Gave up after that it was all too silly.
19. The Grinch Delusion: An Atheist Can Believe in Christmas
Comment #13368 by flashbaby on December 17, 2006 at 9:55 am
There are a number of gods represented in the days of the week which are no longer worshiped. I have no problems with christmas which will hopefully go the way of these days and just become a name for a holiday. The more of us who see it this way the more chance there is of changing the zeitgeist as Prof D calls it.
Comment #13154 by flashbaby on December 16, 2006 at 12:23 am
If there is no god then we are all free to say that we deny the holy spirit I have said it and do now say I deny the holy spirit. If I don't believe in god I dont believe in satan either. Mr wee free bigot is free to believe satan is at work as he chooses but who looks more childish those who believe fairy tales or those who deny they are real?
PS mr wee free revisionist
Definition of blasphemy:
disrespect for religion: disrespect for God or sacred things
so denying god is the ulitmate disrespect and is blasphemy.
If Mr wee free Robertson thinks his definition of blasphemy is correct then saying jesus was gay would not have resulted in the prosecuion of Gay News which was the last successful prosecution for blasphemy under our wonderfully archaic laws in the UK.
Na na na na na!!!

22. When Atheists Have Their Say (5 Letters)
Comment #11474 by flashbaby on December 5, 2006 at 12:16 am
"I have scanned all three atheist sources carefully for polemic, and
my honest judgment is that they are gentle by the standards of normal
political commentary, say, or the standards of theater and arts critics." Richard Dawkins
Of course most theatre critics don't threaten you with violence as happened with a play that sikhs disliked or the scenes outside performances of Jerry Springer the Opera.
Just who is obnoxious and intolerant here.
