2. Does science make belief in God obsolete?

Comment #170019 by terradea on April 27, 2008 at 9:18 am

The Christian religion is based on faith. Faith! I don't understand Christians who strive to "prove" this or that ... if they actually did prove anything, faith would no longer be required and the entire religion would be obsolete.

Science, if anything, should make true Christians even stronger because it would force them to have more faith! Think of it: if science absolutely proved that God never existed, the faith required to believe in God would root out the luke-warm believers. Christians, if they really wanted to strengthen their faith and religion, would welcome, even promote science.

The fact that Christians fight science only proves that they have no faith at all.

Don't y'all read your Bible? The military Christians are just following Jesus' example. Christian = Christ-like, and the Bible mentions many instances where the lord and savior Jesus Christ threated to hurt or kill non-believers.

In my North Webster, Indiana public elementary school in 1969, Mrs. Peebles forced us to say the Lord's Prayer everyday after the Pledge of Allegiance. She even had a lesson on the meaning of each word of the prayer. We were in the fourth grade, and completely unaware that we had a choice in the matter of saying the prayer. In fact, we were intimidated as hell!

Too bad she didn't understand that Jesus didn't hunt down his audiences, nor did he force those who weren't interested in hearing his sermons. Jesus expected his audience to come to him, on hilltops, etc., away from the masses, and he instructed his followers to pray in closets, in private. Far cry from Christianists today.

Average Christians today do and preach exactly what Jesus did not. For example, about you rich folks, and helping the poor ...

"This kind of comment is typical of the kind of stupidity and childishness we could well do without on this site ... Deeply held religious beliefs have nothing to do with "stupidity" ... There are good reasons people believe in religion."

There may be good reasons people believe in religion (e.g., because they do not possess the ability to engage in critical thinking), but there is no good reason for religion belief. I'm sorry, but comments that state facts are exactly what a site criticizing religion, and the folly of its followers, needs.

6. New atheists or new anti-dogmatists?

Brilliant and elegantly presented. Thank you!

In response to FreeThink25: Well, my religion is built on my lengthy experiences with others; that sex is the door to enlightenment and a feeling of oneness with the universe. There is no dogma involved in my religion, nor is there any real faith, but a sense of awakening and realization that, the more I act in accordance with my physical and mental desires, the more I seem to be in touch with myself, aware of the human experience and open to new ideas. Strangely, I've also noticed that, through sex, I've discovered a way of looking at life that is absolutely counter to any religion I've practiced in my past.

Does this count?

I agree with black wolf. Believers will always justify their religion with "god works in mysterious ways." They will declare that, even though a lie brought about christianity (or some other myth), god meant for his word to get out to his believers in any way possible.

In order for humankind to thrive, public support and/or respect of religion must be reversed (i.e., religious schools closed, religious college degrees ended, churches converted to public housing or community centers).

Believers must be constantly ridiculed (e.g., if someone says "bless you" after a sneeze, they must be made to feel ashamed and stupid, not thanked.)

Someone made a mistake ... look at Indiana! I escaped from that twisted, ignorant state years ago and believe me, the religion addiction was running rampant. It is worse than West Virginia, and I itch every time I go back. What's up with the lack of pink and red in that reddest state? (look at the voting results)
