1. PLEASE WRITE IN SUPPORT OF PZ MYERS

Comment #208732 by Jefe on July 11, 2008 at 7:30 am

Email Sent:

Dear Sir,

In respect to the recent controversy between the personal opinion voiced by Professor P.Z. Myers and members of the Catholic Church over the status of a Eucharist wafer, I hope you'll take a moment to view these remarks.

I am writing in support of Professor Myers. It would be a shame if the mob opinion of a large group or organization could lead to the summary expulsion of a Professor at a University over something as simple as expressing a personal opinion. I hope you and your institution will not be moved by the posturing and emotional threats of a group that is so obviously over-reacting, and that you and the University of Minnesota will continue to recognize Professor Myer's constitutionally protected right to freedom of speech and opinion.

Kind Regards,

J. Hunt

2. Investigating Atheism

5 minutes on the site and I already see a couple of 'errors' with the assumptions on which it has been based.

""The New Atheists are typically concerned with defending (at least) the following theses:

* Belief in God and evolution are not compatible.""

I wouldn't categorize this statement (attributed to 'New Athiests') as strictly true.

"" * Atheism is not discredited by the 'atheist tyrannies' of Hitler and Stalin.""

There is misinformation rolled up in this little statement, that demonstrates a lack of understanding of Hitler and Stalin on the part of the Cambridge group.

Not really a promising start.

4. Richard Dawkins to appear in Second Life

In all seriousness, my post above was in jest.

I'm sure that between his studies, teaching, writing, debating, and appearing on a variety of talk-shows, Mr. Dawkins has precious little time for an online game.

And were I him, and were I online, I'd preserve my privacy most carefully so that what little leisure time I had away from the bright lights and big-city-atheism of Dawkins-land, would be strictly my own time.

6. Christopher Hitchens to God: Drop Dead

Anyone who can, with sincerity, say "X's are immoral." need to re-examine their religion-generated ethical morality.

I don't particularly care if X is substituted with a signifier for a religios group, lack-of-religion-group, race, sexuality, or other form of in-group/out-group tribal segregation.
